Innovate for Call of Duty

So, I was having a discussion with my dad about Black Ops. I was saying that it's going to be a fail of a game and just be MW2 in the cold war era, like WaW was to CoD 4. He said that, given what Call of Duty is, it's very hard to innovate any fresh ideas into the mix to actually do what a sequel should do.

And THAT got me thinking, what are some of the new, fresh ideas that we'd like to see in a new Call of Duty game?

I'll get the ball rolling. Why not focus it more on tactical combat than... whatever kind of combat it IS focused on? Make the single player about leading a squad (Probably make the first few levels a tutorial in following orders, like stack-up and such), and then the multiplayer can be two squads with one leader each, and that leader makes the tactical decisions, like where to go and what to throw. Kind of like SWAT 4 or Rainbow Six Vegas, except streamlined for a multiplayer situation.

Hmmm...
How about, instead of just constant combat, there are certain parts between the big battles, where you have fun with your squadmates? Play some paintball, or card games (children or otherwise).
That would be a laugh. Actually make the characters humans, instead of unstoppable juggernauts.
Heh, would be funny that if you got injured, you'd have to spend time in the hospital. Probably chasing the nurses around for a date.

Tht paintball remark makes me remember the paintball death card in WaW. Good times...

OT: well mabye they should do a level where you are a CIA spy behind Soviet lines, and you have to rely on your garrate wire and your wit to survive.

Ghost recon and others have done the squad thing, plus, that's not really a cod thing. Cod is less thinky, more shooty, and that's the way I (sometimes) like it. What I want to see is people abusing the game actually getting banned, for example, boosters, modders, those people... Maybe a back story on the characters would be more immersive, but I'm betting most of the normal cod players would just skip it. Basically, better story is mine, and better community, or at least controlling a bad community better.

I loved the death cards, and the cheats in COD 4 nothing quite like running around with unlimited RPG blowing people up and into a pile of tires. Ah good times...

Replace all the russian soldiers with elites, grunts, and jackals. Add plasma grenades, and a talking sidekick that lives in your helmet. Have the setting be on these odd ring shaped planets. Now that sounds like a great game. I can;t wait to reach for it on store shelves later this year.

hell i'd buy that, but it would be better with a gun that shoots blue and orange portals.

In the co-op mode have you an your partner start away from each other with two different objectives. Then make the path where you and your partner run into each other once or twice for huge epic firefights.

Like say both of you are trying to be stealthy but you aren't right next to each other. Once you both have the objectives the alarm goes off and you meet up and run out.

But you know about that blue/orange portal technology... it always takes longer then expected to develop...

and about CoD... they will never do anything different because they just released CoD4 with newer maps and a new campaign (ok, there were a few new things in multiplayer) but they haven't and won't change their development strategies. (although MW3 will be a completely different game, since it's not really IW anymore but the husk of IW)

Another great idea. We should also add to this ultimate game, many chest high walls, hordes of zombies, and a peggle minigame just because I love that game too.

And to contribute more to this topic that just sillyness. I hope that the next COD lets you have more than one grenade in multiplayer. I need more semtex.

I don't know if I want CoD to innovate all that much. They need to tweak some multi-player decisions for sure, but honestly, all I want is more of the same on different maps. CoD is the unthinking rail shooter and is perfect after a hard day at work when you just want to shoot something.

I'm looking forward to Black-Ops and would actually be disappointed if the game play mechanics were vastly different.

Of course I'm the same kind of guy that buys Madden every year as well, so take it for what it's worth.

I'm one of the few who is really looking forward to Black Ops, loved the MW2 campaign, has no wish for innnovation in the series as long as it is fun to play and will even give the multi a go if it is balanced better than MW2.

A mission which is literally impossible to do with just one life.

You have 1 checkpoint halfway through, you start as a minor character and when you die you 'respawn' as a survivng NPC from your squad. Run out of squadmates, it's game over.

It will be the death of the 'Ramirez, do everything' state in which FPS's reside!
Storming trenches and machine gun emplacements will finally be realistically suicidal!

How about set it furhter in the future? I know, that might be ripping of Battlefield a bit too much, but think about the possibilities. The game wouldn't have problems with trying to act realistic, they could just think of they're own technology.

It would also leave room for actual creativity, instead of shooting a best of collection of war enemies, they could be fighting bread eating Danes or Korean starcraft fans. And instead of your collection of guns from the real world, we could be fighting with short range teleportation devices (imagine how fun that would be in knifing) and flesh-eating jam bullets.

heres an idea... have it take place in WWII as a chinese soldier when the japanese start bombing and invading, and maybe have a similar campaign in europe as poland or england.
but also have signifigant character development, make the characters relatable and human, other than GoW space marines in wwii

wouldn't paintball just be the same gameplay, just with instead of dying and having to respawn you put your hand up and walk back over to your side of the map?

At least it makes a change from everyone always dying. And you can actually have a laugh with your squadmates. Unless you laugh when they get hit by bullets anyway.
Just adds a slightly more human side to the characters. A bit of recreation, instead of 24/7 warfare.

Mine is more about the campaign. How about this, make it *much* more open-ended.

For example: Let's say you have a mission to secure a fortress with trenches and the like surrounding it. There are some Anti-Air guns a little ways from the fort, but if you destroy them, you have the ability to deploy air strikes. Of course, this is entirely optional, you could just attack the base all Rambo-style. But I'd like to see more "secondary" Objectives.
