So the last few nights I've been unable to sleep. I generally can't sleep if i try to any time between 10 - 12pm... which is when I'd prefer to sleep given I have swimming training at 7 every morning.
I know I'm not the only one around with such problems... so any tips for getting to sleep and overcoming insomnia?

Also, add any interesting stories associated with not being able to sleep.

Sleeping pills. Or, don't sleep for a day, and then fall asleep when you want to at night. It will normally fix your sleep schedule. (It did for me)

So don't sleep for an entire 24 hours? I can't do that atm as I have to study pretty much constantly until school starts next week.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to go for drugs either.

I haven't overcome my problem. I takes some really strong and expensive pills to knock me out and Im not paying the money. I usually fall asleep a few days after my insomnia kicks in though and get a good 20 hours of sleep.
I say that you just wait until your brain can't take anymore and shuts itself down. It works for me.

If you have to study constantly then study during the late hours. From around 12-6 is when I'd study, because that is when you can't really do much other than sit there.

Wait, what? You can't stay up for a full day because you have to study constantly? I fail to see the logic here.

Strenuous exercise about an hour or two before you sleep. It'll make you tired, and hopefully, sleepy.

Yeah I can see how that would work. Its just an insane balancing act with sport though... cause if i don't do enough exercise my insomnia gets worse and if I'm too tired from not sleeping I won't want to play sport. Also studying when im tired is practically useless because i end up on the escapist :D

Personally if I have trouble sleeping I usually have some Horlicks or Night Nurse (or both if it's really bad) Although since you're in Australia I'm not sure if they'd be available there, but there must be something similar.

Stay up till about 3 AM, then go to your swim thing. I can promise you will not have sleeping problems the next night.

How old are you any way? Your internal clock is off if you're a teen, so you wouldn't get tired until very late. Also, your body readjusts itself to how late you go to sleep every night. So if you constantly go to sleep late at night, it will be hard to go to sleep early.

Well if i get too tired I can't study. Or at least there will be no point trying... no point beating a dead horse.

I have no answers for this myself. I suffer from insomnia quite frequently (almost every damn night) and it's very frustrating. I suppose having a bit of white noise can be helpful to some. I like to turn the TV on and put it on the history channel... Though I usually end up with WWII dreams. o_O Or I just turn up my speakers on my PC and turn on iTunes. Nice soothing metal... Mmm metal. <3

I'm 17. I generally don't go to bed very late.. as I said between 10 and 12. My internal clock is off anyway because I wake up at 5am most days of the year for swimming. Atm its school holidays so everything changes a little bit.

If that works for you... I find it hard to sleep with even the slightest noise. I wish I had a soundproof room.... mmmmmmm

I've been there, and it sucks.. for me it was underlying issues, ones that I had to deal with FIRST before I could deal with the sleep problems.
Like what? I must admit its much worse when my girlfriend is pissed off at me about something and i have to wonder what I've done.
