Hrm... I use it on what systems I have windows installed on (perhaps not IE6) and unless im am wildly mistaken everyone technically does considering it is not only a browser but an intergrated part of the operating system that allows for file exploration. Sure that does not mean you are using it to browse the internet but by all technical rights (which you can even use it to track your history of what files and folders youve opened in your system the same way you would track browser bookmarks) a LOT more people use it than realize or would even be willing to admit.

Edit: More to the point, Open up task manager, then to processes tab, then "end" Explorer.exe or iexplorer.exe and see what your windows based OS thinks of you trying to stop using IEX

True story: I was at the midnight opening for Iron Man 3 - so it's a crowd of lovely nerds - and this ad starts, talking about how this company has been with us our whole life, had its ups and downs and shared good and bad times with us, all sentimental and touchy feely. And then it reveals it's for IE and the crowd bursts into laughter. One of the funniest moments of my life.

I use IE10. Switched from Chrome to IE9 when it came out and never looked back. I don't need add ons and IE has adblock so it's perfect for me. Also, I honestly don't see what's wrong with IE6, it was good for its time.
Yeah, you may want to edit your post. Suggesting that you may use adblock is an offence under the forum rules.

Anyhow, I started using Chrome on my netbook a few years ago because it was the only browser that ran at a reasonable speed. When I switched to my current laptop which is powerful enough to run GLaDos, I stuck with it. Been a good browser to me.

Explorer.exe is the part in the system that works with the system. I hate it, but it works.

iexplorer.exe is the browser interface. And if that one it running when you haven't been using IE, you've got a problem.
Fair enough. That was my error because I could not recall which was the file browser off the top of my head. So I included both to be on the safe side because its pretty apparent what will happen if you end both of those processes. Then if someone does not see iexplorer in the list, obviously they cant end that process, but still kills explorer, intended effect achieved. Sorry, you beat me to the punch of editing my own post to re clarify it.

I need to use it for some university stuff, but otherwise no. At the end of the day, it's good to have it installed for when you need to deal with those still living in the dark ages. :p

Erm...you seem to have a really distorted view of "the time" then. IE6 was atrocious at any point in time ever. It always is, it always will be. There is nothing really changed much from back then till now, yet try making a website that is is done how it should be [http://www.w3.org/] and...it would just fail on IE6, I guarantee it. So what is that big diffrerence from "its time" till now? Why would friggin' simple HTML markup would not display properly? Simple - IE6 is not standards compliant. In fact, I can call it standards defiant. It spits in the face of standards and then flips them the bird. IE7 does the same, also does IE8, though both to a lesser extent, so they are better than 6 (note that that doesn't mean "good"). Aside from standards, it just can't handle stuff like transparency, apparently, or "being stable".

And you know what's especially funny when I read your comment? For its time it was shamed by all other browsers, too (erm, proper browsers, not the ones essentially skins for IE) - Opera, Konqueror, (slightly later) Firefox were around, were standards compliant, and did have such features like "being user friendly" and "useful". So yeah, IE6 was bad and wrong for its time.

OT: I personally use Firefox. It does the job for me, so I'm happy. I've got Chrome as a backup browser, too. Haven't used IE9+ for more than 15 minutes combined but my impression is that they are at last OK. I'm not going to switch, though, since it took them so damn long to get OK, that I distrust them ever advancing at a decent pace.

Switched to Firefox yeeeeears back.

I've tried Chrome and just can't get into it. The mobile version IS faster than Mozilla's offering, so I use that, but for anything requiring flash, I still have to use Firefox with an old flash apk...so...there's that. :D

Internet Explorer is, quite literally, just a means to acquiring a better browser.

I actually switched from chrome back to ie sometime around when 10 came out. Chrome isn't bad but ie is a bit faster, sleeker, and integrates well into Windows 8.

That being said I still use chrome for certain things if they benefit from browser apps, and I have firefox installed too for testing my webpages.

Windows 8's Internet Explorer is quite good, and is really the only browser that works with my MS Surface. Firefox gets wonky (For some reason, it's underlying memory leak issues seem to be exacerbated in W8), and Chrome refuses to acknowledge my touch screen.

On my W7 desktop, however, I use Firefox. I've got enough RAM to ignore Firefox's flaws.

The only time I ever use Internet Explorer is when I need to download Firefox.
I work in a computer store, and my boss is an expert in cyber-security (he actually has the highest-level clearance that a civilian can legally have). We've found that Firefox + COMODO Antivirus + Malwarebytes (as a fall-back) is the safest way to browse the web.

I use Chrome, but I sometimes use IE for the hell of it. IE's alright nowadays, but it still can crash for no reason, which is one reason I don't use it all the time.

Assuming you live in the United States... security clearances don't really work that way. There is no 'highest civilians can legally have.'

In fact, though the numbers of security clearances aren't exactly posted (Somewhere around 5 million, from what I can see online), most of the upper tiered (SCI, which isn't exactly 'upper,' its just the one you need for the 'fun' stuff usually) are probably held by civilians.

Firefox usually. Tried Chrome, didn't like it. Stuck with IE at the moment, doing a course and we aren't allowed install any software. It crashes at least once a day on the Escapist. And it was in some kind of compatibilty view for a while, and I couldn't log out of here. On a more or less public computer. Whose password is password, and its written on the desk. So in summation, IE can bite me.
