Welcome to the Escapist, we talk more about 1337 speak and it's general shittiness more than we do games.
Although this is a prdominately video game-themed website, that doesn't mean that video games has to be its only purpose, and in a specific forum called "Off-topic Discussion" I can make a topic about almost whatever I wish.

Welcome to the Escapist.
You have misunderstood me. I hardly even play games any more, I come here for the community. I was simply observing that you seem to have a created a thread destined to end up with 50 variations of "I agree". Although that sounds more negative than I meant it. I was saying we get it.

People would argue that omitting letters, punctuation marks, or even entire clauses, improves efficiency. I find this flawed for (at least) two reasons: 1) for many people, interpreting such messages become unnecessarily difficult, and 2) I have to go out of my way to type such incomprehensible gibberish.

I suppose I could understand a person not wanting to waste time spell-checking, but going out of your way to put forth such garbage is neither efficient nor ideal.
QFT .

I hate people who pump out unintelligible grammar and spelling with a passion. They shouldn't even be allowed on the Internet until they average'd a 5 in English class regardless of age. I keep having to ask the very few I know who types like retards to re-type their sentences because they're agonizingly impossible to understand because of the typos that obliterate their sentences more than Swiss cheese(!).

I'm just happy to be able to understand the majority of posts on a forum. I tried other forums, and I know translating might be a big part of my degree, but it was just stupid.

I've also started to be a lot more aware of my punctuation since joining here.

So fuck me and everyone like me who've got terrible hand-writing chicken scratch! It's not like I can type quite well or anything.

What's next, arguing how plain crazy it is schools don't demand kids learn inkpot skills?

There are worse things in the world than sub-standard grammar & spelling.

Not everyone has the privilege of a sound education.
That's a weak excuse. Anyone with the desire to learn educates themselves as much as they are educated by others. Refusing to educate yourself, even without opportunity, just shows the world how dumb you really are.
Eh, you're probably right. I just don't think it's necessary to draw attention to anyone's (supposed) educational inferiority on the internet. There could be a multitude of reasons why they missed out an apostrophe or two and I'm not gonna crucify them for it.
Fair enough. There ARE worse things in the world than accidentally broken punctuation or such like, as you said.

None taken.

Anyway, I think those without a decent grasp on spelling and punctuation know about it pretty darn quick, so maybe they will learn.

Although I myself tend to miss apostrophes frequently, I do agree that the new wave of chat is becoming more and more dumbed down. Actually, I ususally avoid apostrophes whenever I can and frequently do not type them on the sole basis that I never remember where to put them. Most of the time my sentences do not suffer from this but I believe the more radical changes in text really do cause problems. It takes longer to read and translate a post written in modern day slang and overall, we waste more time switching our brain from an active, fluent english to slang terms. If anyone who types or writes in this slang actually takes time to read posts written in the same way (although on reflection the majority probably do not) they only waste more time than they save writing it.

Looking back, I notice one of my more backhanded comments could be taken offensively and while I could care less if I offend most people here (because anyone who is offended will logically be typing in slang and therefore lose any remaining respect I had) I feel the need to justify my statement. Let me keep it short, if you want to be taken seriously, if you want people to see you as mature, intelligent or serious, talking in internet slang will only hurt you. I can't speak for anyone but I can say that I personally find it hard to take anyone speaking in slang very seriously and on the internet the fact is made much larger by the fact that I've never spoken with the person talking face-to-face. I also cannot say that I've ever heard someone say that seeing slang brings positive thoughts.

But I ramble again. My point is, slang does not sound professional or mature and will negatively impact any serious conversation.

I don't mean to play the devils advocate here, but are none of you capable of interpreting "U" as "You"?

This thread gives off a very "Elitist" vibe.

My favorite argument against chatspeak is that it shows disrespect towards whoever you are talking too. If they aren't willing to give you the tenth of a second it takes to type "you" instead of "u" then they are saying you aren't worth even miniscule amounts of their "valuable" time.

I'm sure there is a logical error there, but it shuts up chatspeakers pretty fast. Or shows they are even bigger idiots than I thought.

I argued from the efficiency standpoint. Since I spend most of my time typing essays and papers and not firing off messages into chat fields, I'm conditioned to type 'you' as opposed to merely 'u'.

Perhaps poor spelling and grammar online is linked to social skills?

Using your own language correctly makes you an elitist?

What exactly is wrong with being elite anyway? I was always under the impression that being the best that you can be was a GOOD thing...

Why use full words when removing letters saves time?

The fact that so many letters can be removed reiforces the point that english needs rewriting.

Not everyone knows IPA transcriptions. Not to mention the big reason for English being such a strong language is it's willingness to adopt new words and spellings all the time.

I will agree that it would be good to trim the fat every decade or so.

It's funny that you omitted a letter from your own statement, probably by accident, and made something that's not a word at all.

Words are spelled the way they are for several reasons. One being etymology. If you don't know what a word means on its own, you can usually break it down into its various root parts to make sense of it. Another reason being... so you can pronounce the word correctly! Lastly, though probably not the last possible reason, for consistency. If everyone spelled everything however they wanted, nobody would understand what anyone else was saying. If you can't understand what others are saying, what's the point of language? The whole thing falls apart, you see?

The ironic thing is, without standardized spellings for words, you couldn't possibly butcher the language with random abbreviations and "unique" spellings. It's the standardization of language that gives it that flexibility.

I wouldn't say total literacy is required on the internet but you could at least make your damn message readable and take away its effect of urging me to gouge out my eyes with a dull spoon.
