can i hook up the Ethernet cable straight to my pc and if not what's a good wireless thing to use on the 360

Yes you can connect to Xbox live through a wireless connection on your pc if you hook them up with an ethernet cable. Just look up in google on how to do it with your OS.

vista and I'm not sure i have a crossover ether cable

Yes it should do. It worked for me with my laptop.
