I'm not sure if this thread has been done before, it seems like the kind of thing that should have been done before, but after a quick search, I didn't see anything related to this. So if this is a repeat thread, I apologize.

Rule 63 of the internet is: "There's always a female version of a Male character. No Exceptions", which could be extended into "There is always a male version of a Female character. No Exceptions".

My question to you is, what do you think about this? Are there times when it is ok, but others it is not?
I have seen some pretty good ones like these (which I shall spoiler if you are against them)
<spoiler=Female Link>http://images.cheezburger.com/completestore/2010/2/16/129108610784993927.jpghttp://art.ngfiles.com/images/3/clovis15_girl-link-navi-s-bad-advice.pnghttp://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z167/Great_WhiteSnark/WonderCon%202010a/Girl_Link_Costume.jpg
<spoiler=Female Mario>http://i719.photobucket.com/albums/ww199/50DollarCurse/Gaming%20Wallpapers/Mario/yantensupermarioworldby.pnghttp://0.tqn.com/d/classicgames/1/0/q/E/-/-/TheMarioSisters2.jpg
<spoiler=Female Master Chief>http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k346/Neanderthalis/female_master_chief_03.jpghttp://cdn.smosh.com/sites/default/files/bloguploads/girl-cosplay-master-chief.jpg
<spoiler=Male Samus>http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v668/killnpc/samuel.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v668/killnpc/samuel02.jpg

While I think it is interesting to see gender swaps like these, I am not ok with Samus being portrayed as a guy... She is the queen of gaming, and it was a HUGE deal when people realized she was a girl. Making her a guy kind of defeats that in my mind. Female Link is hot as fuck though o_o

Also, please share any gender swaps that you have seen :D

Edit: Fixed the images so they actually work... I still can't believe that I messed that up, I feel like such a noob =|
Edit 2: I found a different male samus (just for you Redlin5 :p) but they are in very short supply /shrug
Edit 3: I added some more "general" pictures of rule 63. Mostly to satisfy QQ, but also to make it seem like I am not talking about fan fic stuff.

Did you have to pick the ugliest Male Samus ever? o_O

Fortunately for me, the internet has not rule 63'd my favorite character in any medium.[footnote]Aforementioned character remains confidential.[/footnote] I do remember seeing a pretty awesome Snake Plissken somewhere... Not showing up on the google.

Oh and if you're wondering how to post images OP, this thread will help you. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.198114-Escapist-User-Guide-to-Posting-Commands]

Can we not have threads dedicated to internet rules that are idiotic and only pander to fan service? They tend to not end well. You know which one I'm talking about.
Someone doesn't like R34 ;D

While this may relate to internet rules, but it is just a general thing that you see on the internet a lot. I mean, there is Femshep after all...

its not realy a female version of said charachter

its just a female stripper dressed up as that charachter, the mario example illustrating this

the real female Mario would be slightly portly) working class Girl, not some hot anime charachter

Cool kids don't go shouting "Internet Rule Number (Insert Number Here), No Exceptions!" anymore. It got old.

The female Mario is perturbing to say the least....

I agree with Vault101, these are cos-plays at best and don't truly represent a gender swap. (Except Link, but honestly, he's halfway there anyhow)

Yeah, that's what I'd say. The examples in the OP aren't good R63, it's just fan service. When it's evident that someone has actually sat down and thought about the various differences in culture and costume that would actually stem from flipping a character's gender, that can be interesting. Even when they basically look the same because the character is fairly androgynous to start with, that shows more thought than just going 'busty woman in themed stripper outfit'. For example, a female Master Chief... Would still just look like Master Chief.

Here are some more interesting ones to think of; Rule 63 versions of:

(Less so the Joker one, but I love that Harley Quinn get up)

I think it's a lot more interesting when done to characters who have very strong gender identities to start with. It's fun to mess around with that a bit.

Femshep isnt an example of...."this" shes a REAL example of what happens when you change a chrachters gender...not put an outfit on a stripper

for example following the logic of those original pics femshep would be running around in a bikini, not full armour

Ah, I see what you mean, but you are still missing my point.
My point isn't that there are scantily clad female versions of traditionally male characters. The reason that my examples are scantily clad, is because they are fan made, and because it is the internet. Its like how you usually see men with HUGE armour (the more it protects, the more it protects), while women have chainmail bikinis (the less it protects, THE MORE it protects).

My question for you, is what do you think of female versions of male characters and male versions of female characters?
Just ignore that my examples have huge breasts falling out of their super thin clothing.

Yeah, my examples are not that good. I could have spent more time finding examples that aren't fan service, but I felt lazy.

Your examples are much better for this thread.

what do I think?

for the scantily clad ones it annoys me, and shows all is not eaquel in the world of charachters, its just pure fan-service and nothing more

now if its actually done properly, without the fanservice...its a very interesting thing, and of coarse interesting to see how the charachter would act and be treated

Exactly! A female link would not be "one man against the forces of darkness", it would be "one WOMAN against the forces of darkness", which is a very interesting difference.

Imagine if Master Chief took off his helmet and was a woman?
The best example about this case is Samus taking off her helmet and being a HER. I mean, that was huge! A character everyone ASSUMED was a guy, suddenly a girl? That just isn't done!
Now think about how interesting things would be if characters that you KNOW are guys and are very dominant male characters, but then they are suddenly female. Marcus Fenix as a girl? Cortana as a guy? I find that very interesting and I don't understand how other people cannot find it interesting.

of coarse just like comander shepard we actually do see this put into effect with alot of RPG's

such as Dragon age, Fallout games and a non-RPG example saints row
