Every one of those female Rule 63s is obviously drawn by a man who wanted to live out his fantasy of seeing some tits and ass in the context of a beloved game character.

Seriously, I thought games like DoA were bad about objectivizing women. Female Link is *kind of* dressed like Link, but she's wearing basically nothing but a shirt, hat and boots. Link looks like an adventurer, she looks like a cosplayer trying to show off her... assets. Female Mario... need I say it? Massive, beyond-reasonable boobs and a big ass sticking out in a ridiculously uncomfortable position. Obviously those mushrooms have a different effect on women. And then there's female Samus. Perfect idea: let's take off half her armor and give her a boob hole. Everyone knows the Covenant will target that spot... with their eyes... and their pants will tighten and they'll be taken down more easily. Definitely not a hazard to literally just dig a circular hole out of your power armor for a perfect path for bullets to the heart. And the chest area should be really nice, too, what with all those beam swords the Covenant like to use. I wonder how much faster the Flood can transform a person wearing armor like that?

I'd like to see some good examples, but these are just outright pandering. And my mind was blown when I saw how terrible the male Samus-s-s were... A nasty orc, apparently, and a terrible Gackt-looking guy who appears to have found the orc's moon sugar stash. There HAVE TO be better examples than these.

edit: my rant is late as ever, but I guess the point still stands, added to those above. More importantly, let's see some GOOD examples of R63.

just my speculation, but a male equiv of harley would be Harlan would it not?

OT: is there a complete rulebook, or is the net slowly and randomly assigning rules and numbers? If not, prolly need to get to filling it all out and be done with it. seems like so much uncovered ground for 65 and wheres the logic of stopping on an odd number

its not realy a female version of said charachter

its just a female stripper dressed up as that charachter, the mario example illustrating this

the real female Mario would be slightly portly) working class Girl, not some hot anime charachter
Facts.

I find the concept of a characer being "gender swapped" midly interesting, but I don't really care for a character being turned into a girl purely for sex appeal.

There is no way a Spartain would run around in that getup! 'Sides, we've already seen what a female Spartain looks like - basically like a male one, but with a slightly larger chest piece.

Also, I love the [fem]Joker and [male]Harley.

I would picture a male harly quing being a more "camp" guy...because the femininity is a very big part of that charachter

Not that I've seen many examples of Rule 63 done tastefully and within lore[sub]because lore matters damn it![/sub]but those examples are Grade-A for some guy's fantasy, not for Rule 63. But I suppose it is in the rule's nature to be treated as such just like Rule 34. Take it away Avenue Q! [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-TA57L0kuc]

Perhaps another example, possibly better, would be the Adepta Sororitas? There isn't anything terribly fan-service pandering or 'wrong' about them except for the reason as to why? Which also raises the question: what is GamesWorkshop is tacking the mickey out of here. Does it still count even though they're canon?

There is no such thing as a female Mario, as a Mario with no stache is no Mario at all.

And while it offends my sensibilities, female Link totally hot, I've seen more accurate examples though.

Now, my opinion is that I don't really care if gender-bender art is ridiculous or pandering, that's kinda' the point. As long as it's well done, I can enjoy it.WHen it's bad though, it's really bad.

Besides, if we didn't have Rule 63, we wouldn't have Nerf Now [http://www.nerfnow.com/],
and then where would we be?

Gender
Male
The thing about most Rule 63, which I know you addressed in the OP, is that most of it is male-to-female. Not that that can be helped; most fictional characters are male, after all. But, in the interest of more balance:

But that's what makes Rule 63 interesting to me, changing the nature of those characters and the dynamics between them. On the one hand I think it's interesting to look at the characters with their gender identity changed, but on the other you don't want to just invert everything as thoroughly as possible because that becomes dull too.

In the case of that Rule 63'd Joker/Harley pair, I imagine the male Harley being and Arkham orderly or some such to explain his massive stature. He becomes obsessed with thinking of the female Joker as someone who's never had someone looking after her, a twisted example of the whole 'I can save her' mindset, just as the original is twisted from the whole 'I can fix him' view. He therefore ends up doting on her to the extent that he blames himself whenever she, say, takes the opportunity to kick him in the ribs for screwing up. I think it would be a different take on the abusive relationship, where the abuse victim is obviously capable of snapping the abuser in half if they ever let themselves*.

[small]*This also led me to start reasoning that I think Harley Quinn actually could beat up The joker in a straight up fight if it came down to it... But that's another topic entirely.[/small]

Can we not have threads dedicated to internet rules that are idiotic and only pander to fan service? They tend to not end well. You know which one I'm talking about.
You cannot escape 4chan, unfortunately it permeates all. All we can do is hope threads like this die quickly.

Someone made this video before Zero Suit Samus was... canon? I guess canon is the word. Anyway, seemed to fit the nature of the thread.

While I think it is interesting to see gender swaps like these, I am not ok with Samus being portrayed as a guy... She is the queen of gaming, and it was a HUGE deal when people realized she was a girl. Making her a guy kind of defeats that in my mind.
Wait, wait, wait... Now you've gone and confused me.. You're against Samus being 'guy-ified' because she's such a strong female character[footnote]Which, in my opinion, The Other M ruined..[/footnote] but you're okay with iconic male characters being girl-ified? That seems kind of..odd to me.

To date, I've not seen a male Kate Walker, a female Atrus, or a female Achenar. A not-fan-servicey version of the last one would be really interesting.

Samus is special because she is THE iconic girl of all gaming. She was the first time that the gender assumption was bent.
I think it would be amusing to see guy form of Samus, but not as cool as any other gender benders. I mean, space marines already exist, and they are mostly guys. Samus is the special one because she is Samus! If you gender bend Marcus Fenix or Mario, it is amusing because they are very strong guy characters, but they aren't THE guy character.

Make sense?

TL;DR version is: Samus is special because she is.

Sadly, I doubt >95% of the escapist will get your myst references.
Also there is no such thing as not-fan-servicey versions of rule 63.
Then again, I've seen a lot of them, and only the absolute WORST made it to this thread : D
