How about trying to not see this as the act of a person with Aspergers, but as the act of an adult human being? And seens as that it is simply despicable. A few months in jail certainly won't hurt this man's career and give him some time to consider his actions.

Furthermore: If his Aspergers has alienated him from society to the point that he can't see right or wrong, he probably doesn't mind being seperated from society by a set of bars.

Hate speech is not protected.
His "opinions" border on slander, and his intent was most clearly purely malicious.

This is a fair call.

Jail?

Are we gonna start jailing people who call each other "fatty" or "four-eyes" next?

How about moderating comments better?
Yup, this right here.

What he did was low, really low, and not remotely funny even in a 'nervous laughter' kind of way. But Jesus Titty Fucking Christ people! How can we parade freedom of expression as something to aspire to if we're going to start, not just prosecuting people, but throwing them in jail, for saying something distasteful. I'm pretty sure you could still get away with something like that in Iran for crying out loud.

Now we get to watch as overly sensitive people everywhere use this case as an example and try to get everyone who was ever mean to them locked up.

Eighteen weeks! Hot damn, is that an over-reaction.

It wasn't funny, but it sure as hell didn't warrant four months of hard time.
With respect, Dna... yeah... it kind of does. This sort of culture needs to be zapped dead in its tracks. (pun not intended) A culture, internet based, or real, based soley and exclusively off of the idea of being as absoultely nasty and unmitigatedly hateful as one can possibly make themselves be, should be eradicated as quickly and mercilessly as the culture itself attempts to be.

I dont believe for one second that any over-reaching government has the right to reach in and censor its civilians at the whims of any one person... but I also dont believe that the drooling morons that compose "anonymous" should be foraging a trail of enforced ignorance for future generations to follow. These people would be ostracized and made outcast if they acted this way in real life... there is zero excuse to laud them as "internet freedom fighters" or "first amendment champions" because they are doing it behind a keyboard.

Its not about free speech.
Its not about personal liberty.
It is about being as evil as you can be, without consequence.
Period.

I was about to ask how this could possibly stand, then I realized that this happened in the UK. Interesting that one wouldn't get arrested for this in the US, but would in the UK.

Heh That was sort of my thought as well. I'm not saying Asperger's doesn't exist, but it's just getting pathetic at this point. It's like the new ADHD where it's being blamed for every single case of acting inappropriately in a social situation.
Naw. Asperger's is actually real. ADHD is something which Parents and Teachers diagnose when they can't control a student. Sure ADHD is real, it just gets mixed up with standard unruly children nowadays.

I'm saying this as a person who has Teacher diagnosed ADHD, but refused to take the meds so i got kicked out of school and with a brother who has asperger's.

Utterly despicable as his actions where, such severe physical sanctions for a verbal offence is quite disproportionate as I see it.

His Aspergers offers no excuse whatsoever though. While it might make you unable to understand the feelings of others - and hence appear insensitive - this guy actively hunted them down with the specific purpose of provoking a reaction he then obviously knew of. And even if his development disorder had played a part in his behaviour, anyone who's sane enough to not be a ward of the state should always answer in full for their crimes.

Yes we do know the difference and what he did was certainly wrong. He deserves that time in prison and I hope he gets more.

That's definitely an overreaction (as well as going against the first amendment) but I can't say I feel sorry for him.

I can attest to that, we usually have a more ingrained sense of personal moral than most people without autisms.

Also we dont nessesarily suffer due to it.

This has made tv news too, and (I could be wrong) but when I read "trolling" I read it as "troll-ling" whereas the new people are saying it as "trolling", its tickled me everytime on hearing it.

Holy overreaction Batman!

Killing a dog, stealing a thousand dollars and insulting a dead girl. All ways to spend this amount of time in jail. And yet, the WBC get's NOTHING.

Hooray for legal systems!

Also, these insults really aren't that bad. If the police ever checked out /b/ there would be many bricks shat.

EDIT: After viewing the rest of the thread, I can say that if you honestly think this is fair punishment, please take a look at what you are saying and reconsider.

No. This is just beyond wrong.

Look its in bad taste there is no question (However I did laugh at the text of "Tasha the Tank Engine".

Look. People need to get over trolls. First and foremost by committing overreactions like this, your playing into exactly what the troll is trying to accomplish.

Secondly, This action is beyond wrong. It creates that dangerous precedent that you have to ask where does it end? Given the location mentioned I am assuming this is in the UK, but this is why the US has freedom of speech. It is Not to give douchenozzles the ability to be monumental pricks, but having to endure the occasional obnoxious ass is the price that must be paid in order to ensure we all have the freedom to say what we wish without fear of reprisal.

I wish people would grow thicker skin, and realize trolls are not entirely a bad thing. If nothing else they prove we still DO have such freedom, and I honestly fear a day when there are no trolls.

It boils down to a slightly modified version of this pearl of wisdom

So dont give them the satisfaction and in the process protect that freedom of speech.

That's my point though. Both Asperger's and ADHD do really exist but they both get pulled out of nowhere any time someone gets caught doing something extremely stupid in something involving social interaction. ADHD was the flavour of the week a couple years ago and now it's Asperger's. Really, it's just an insult to the people who honestly do have those issues when someone tries to use them as an excuse for their own (or their childs) stupid behaviour. If everyone who claimed to have either Asperger's or ADHD really did have it, or at least had it to the degree where it completely impacted their ability to act "normally" while interacting with others, it would be a bigger epidemic than almost anything else the world has ever seen.
