so I ran into a rumor today and I wanted to know if this is just a group pulling a sort of 'mew under the truck" thing or if its real...
suppositly a new glitch has popped up allowing TF2 players to open the new end of summer crates by highlighting the crate and pushing several buttons the guy I heard it from said it was Alt+f4 which I tested and no it doesn't work ...

mostly it bugs me people are trying to give out what seems like misinformation although harmless I would like to be able to confandly mark this as false for others we get enough false info with people trying to trick others to "unbind all"

You serious? This prank is older than computers. Tell someone there's an important function associated with Alt+f4 which commonly is the function used to quickly quit programs. The idea is to trick noobs into shutting down their game.

As I recall, Valve removed this from TF2 otherwise I'm sure you'd already know about it. I saw it happen to people all the time.

I came in here expecting to hear about the MOTD trojan rumor where some servers' message of the day could infect your account and steal your info. I don't know for sure if that one is true, but lots of people are saying it is, and that one way to avoid it is just play only on Valve servers or extremely trusted servers until the whole thing blows over.

Not that old chestnut!

I remember that scam going around in goddamn Runescape. "Drop all your items and press alt+f4 and you duplicate them!"

Did you seriously fall for Alt + F4, or did you already know what it did but tested it anyway? Because I mean, like ... gee whiz OP.

Ahhh, the good ol' Alt + F4 prank. I fell for it once as a teenager back in the day in Jedi Outcast. What can I say, I was young and naive (it was my first online multiplayer experience).

No, there's no way to open the new crates yet. However, the Civilian has made a triumphant return. I've seen three of them in the past week or so:

Hey guys, did you know typing explode in console causes a random player on the other team to explode?

How do you trade? Type unbind all in console.

How do you get laser weapons? Type "bind mouse1 kill" in console.

Yeah, I sure have heard of that in the last week, but I haven't gotten real evidence besides one or two testimonies from one-post accounts on different sites.

Another one I heard of more recently is custom maps: there was an exploit where you would download and run a seemingly innocent custom map from the server, but when unpacking and using the map it would inject malicious software into your computer. Now Valve has a limit where maps can only be so big, which conflicts with a handful of custom maps.

Man, this thread just made me burst out laughing so hard. Been a while since I've seen someone fall for the Alt+F4 trick. Last time was on a game of League. Some guy said "My game is lagging really hard." Guy on my team said "Try Alt+F4. It resets your settings." Next thing "A summoner has disconnected!" We all had a good laugh. He even comes back and said "It just made my game crash."

It's 2014 and you're surprised by this, OP?! Trolling is in the Web's blood, and people can and will spread false rumors like this for the simple purpose of fucking with people they've arbitrarily deemed to be worthy.

My advice is to simply ignore anyone who tells you to mess with keyboard shortcuts or console commands, unless it comes from reputable sources. By that, I don't mean your Steam group of choice; I mean NeoGAF, GameFAQs and most other respected Games Journalism-related outlets.

As a general rule of thumb, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
