Yes, it's not exactly a new idea, is it? [sub]Also, I'd like to say "SSBNs" about now[/sub]

Given a decent enough twist, it could still work, but it'd have to be a hell of a twist.

I wouldn't say it was particularly overdone. Not yet, anyway. Really though, i'd like to see a take on the concept that didn't come down to jingoistic nonsense about teary eyed marines and billowing flags.

I've not played it, but i've been led to believe that it's essentially self indulgent, what with the valiant America underdogs and the ruthless Asian invaders. Does it actually achieve anything fresh?

Is America the only country that makes games where other countries invade it? As far as I can tell, this is the case.

Eh... kinda.

But not when compared to all the America-charges-in-to-save-the-day-by-stomping-on-a-third-world-country games.

The rebels are sometimes even more fucked up than the Koreans like using white phosphorous and generally just being jerks And you're boss in the game is Colonel Kurtz: Colorado edition and is quite the asshead yeah its pretty morally grey (thankfully).

Ooh, good to hear. I probably won't be getting it, on account of only having access to my xbox every couple of months and having a bunch of other stuff I wanna try, but that is the sort of thing these games should try. How much do they focus on that idea though? Is the whole thing about discarding morals for survival an actual plot point, or does it all get shrugged off by the end as acceptable in the name of freedom, liberty and apple pie? :p

It is, at least for the modern day. I'd like to see more games about the colonial aspect and the pirate times.

Plus the Native American wars against the US as they settled would be interesting.

or a Civil war game.

It's not overused so much as it's a cheap ploy to get people invested. "DER AWN YER LAWN! DE-FEND YER LAND!" or if you don't have the blue blood of the patriots: "Lol, silly macho 'mericans' you're not so invincible when you're on fire."
Just because it's a virtual representation of my soil, doesn't mean I care if fake Nazis are flying UFOs over it.
Unless I can steal them GTA style (not the fouth one)

I'd like to see an open-world, guerrilla-combat game set in a post-invasion United States. Kind of like Saboteur, but first-person and set in modern day and not a buggy pile of crap.

Because if it works the first time, why fix what's not broke. Since companies don't wanna take risks and change the formula, they'll settle for a lack of originality.

Considering how many WWII games there are, and how much larger the US is compared to the area fought over in WWII, Id say game developers have just hit the tip of the iceberg. The whole "invading America and making a big dramatic thing of it too" crap needs to stop tho.

Doesn't go either way. It makes you the gamer decide on weather the sick shit you do is worth it.

I don't think it's overdone, I just don't think it's ever been done WELL.
I second that! I was hoping Home Front would do well, but it fell short :'(

Now American invasions of Germany and Middle-Eastern countries have been done well, done medium well, and be over done to the T. It needs to stop.

No. The only good invasion of America game was Freedom Fighters from 2003. BC2 doesn't count because the invasion makes up roughly 3% of the playtime.

In other words, in order for Invasion of America to be overdone, there need to be more quality titles based on the topic than the average player would be willing to buy at any given time.
Was just about to write it myself! Freedom fighter is the game which managed to pull an american invasion off quite well.

I feel like by the time you get into Home Front, it just abruptly ends. I can understand why they ended it that way but it still ends too soon to me.
