Whether it be human, alien or something else, your homeland is being invaded. The invading army is looting its way across the landscape. Your countries military's strength was spent at the beginning of the war, trying to stop them at the border but that has failed horribly. The army is disorganized, the airforce is nonexistent and the navy has been sunk.
To give an idea of the speed of advance, we'll use America as an example. By week 9, they are already half way across the states.
The enemy approaches your home town. Rumors are flying wild. Some say the enemy enslaves those who are captured. Others say it is suicide to stay at all. War journalists and TV crews have shown the hell that is the battlefield. The enemy fields a weapon no one understands or can counter. Friendly casualties are enormous.
What do you do?
1) Stand and fight. Form a militia with your neighbors, get some limited supplies from the army and entrench. It is your backyard this army is stomping on. That's trespassing!
2) Run like hell. Fighting seems like suicide and you don't know what the enemy will do when they arrive.
3) Wait for the inevitable. Heck, at this rate going anywhere is dangerous. Maybe these rumors are just that, rumors. Besides, evacuation isn't exactly orderly either. I just hope our guys don't nuke this area...
Personally I would run like hell. I'm not a coward but I'm not going to die in vain. I'd join the army and fight my hardest when we've regrouped and/or been reinforced by allies. My home isn't exactly worth my life. I'll regret losing everything but at least my family escaped to safety with me.
