Yeah, that was pretty bad. Seems like the ref had the status quo in mind while calling that game.

Just watched it. What makes it worse is that the players were also offside when the ball went in. It should not have in any sense been a goal. The game should be replayed. That was horrific.

He even admitted it, he said it was a mistake, but he still said he did it - but then how would they go about fixing it?

Oh wait, I just remembered - football's shit.

What pisses me off isn't that Henry did it and the French won, it's that their manager was saying "Let's just be happy for France and let all of us enjoy our qualification" or something to that effect.

They really need to get change the rules, many other sports have done it, but football has yet to change. Absolute disgrace.

Anyone who argues against it is a complete twat, I'd rather they spent a 1 or 2 minutes checking footage than 1 or 2 minutes arguing with the ref.

Who knows, maybe karma will come back and bite Henry with a career ending injury in the world cup.
Actually the rules changed. Alot over the years. This is not a rule problem. This is a 4 blind/bought refeeres.

Also didn't FIFA started to use 2 extra refeeres behind the goal structure to prevent this stuff happening? Or are they just using that crap for the UEFA cup?
They've tried that in the UEFA cup, but it's been of little or no use. As for the goal, that is shit luck right there. No chance that was a legitimate goal, and I really can't wait to see France get shafted in the World Cup after this.

Post the vid if you like dude, as it would be on topic due to being another example of the need for video replay.

I'd be interested to see it too.

I bet Henry will sleep like a fuckin baby tonight too.
There you go.

*grumble* qualified referee my arse *grumble* linesman's blind...Scotland would have qualified if they had picked up a draw as well.
I remember that. I've never uttered so many obscenities, or made so many referances to a single person's possible lineage in such a short peiod of time.

If Ireland did that they would have been penalised for it, but because France is a bigger team they didn't do anything.

Video replays are the only - the ONLY - way forward for football.

To stop added time, I think that the clock should count down from 45 minutes rather than up. Problem with that is it encourages time-wasting.

FIFA won't call a replay because they'll lose 5-10% of their revenue, make an enemy of Platini and be pushed around by the media.

To all the Irish fans, more importantly to those players who played so well (that was the last shot at a World Cup for some of them), I am completely gutted for you and I hope it brings about a radical change in the sport. Hope.

Did any Escapist soccer fans watch this match tonight?

If not, and you haven't heard what happened, have a look at this:

Thierri Henri blatantly cheated, which was amazingly either ignored or not noticed by any of the officials.

This was also the match winning goal, which secured France's ill-gotten place in the world cup and stopped Ireland getting into the finals.

This is the most blatant rewarding of a cheater since the English got screwed over by Maradona.

Are there any Irish or French escapists with an opinion on this?

And more importantly, is it not about damn time they brought in video replay to the sport so shit like this doesn't happen?
I couldn't see the fucking video

French, gentlemen of football? Am I the only not not in the least bit suprised France would be filthy cheats. Their national league is a disgrace and the pitches would be better off replaced by the 10m platform or the 3m spring board. They are worse than Serie A. Somehow.

Give me the A-League, Bundesliga or EPL anyday.

I guess the Irish are lucky no one got headbutted.

Don't get me started on teams in the AFC for cheating though....filthy scum.
Care to explain why the national league is a disgrace, or are you happy to just make your sweeping generalisations based on nothing?

OT: I'm French, so I guess I can't really sympathise with you all. I guess you could take some small comfort in the knowledge that we will once again embarrass ourselves at the world cup if Domenech is still in charge. That said, Ireland missed a lot of easy chances in the first 90 mins.

Well the FAI(Football Association of Ireland) are calling for a replay but its never going to happen, FIFA are happy as long as they have their bigger countrys in the World Cup, they don't give a toss about the smaller countrys.

I'm French (BOOO HISSS!)

I am disgusted with Henry, but one point with regards to the refereeing, the ref didn't ask Henry if he had handballed it.

Thats a huge lacking part from the ref, he should have asked the player....

To me, it doesn't look like he did it on purpose. But I don't understand why they don't want video replays...

im not a soccor fan but i am irish and i am fucking pissed the ref could see him touch it I don,t blame him however because chances are with the size of the crowd some people would be really pissed off something should be done chances are it will be swept under the rug. The only real problem i have with this though he still hasnt a fucking apoilgised to us im not saying we would have won if he din,t hand ball it but if it had gone to penaltys and we lost at least it would be fair.

I don't know what it is about French sports teams but they always get away with illegal plays that should have been caught in crucial matches. I bring your attention to the 2007 Rugby World Cup where in a quarter-finals match a forward pass was not caught and gave France the winning Try, knocking NZ out and sending France to the Semis.

Man, the videos of this are being hunted down faster than anime releases.

That's just WEIRD.

Anyway, I feel sorry for my Irish kin, even though I'm not a football fan... that was a bad move on the referee.
