I will respond to O'Dowd with respect and dignity.

O'Dowd, there is not enough evidence to draw any conclusion as to why the shooter did what he did. And even if there was, I highly doubt video games were the sole culprit.

Video games, just like any other medium, have both positive and negative effects on the people who enjoy them. There have been plenty of studies, all contradicting each other, that show an increase/decrease in aggression over a short period of time, but no study has shown it being linked to a long-term timeframe.

I understand that from the outside, it looks like video games are nothing but "murder simulators", but they are not. Any sane person would be able to discern between fantasy and reality. It's all a balance. The shooter was already ill in the head, any number of things could have "set him off" (which, honestly, I don't think is how psychology actually works. Can someone really just "snap" and do something or is it a decision based on a long thought process?), not just video games.

Video games, movies, books, violent TV, guns, Sarah Palin, or liberals did not "make" him do anything. When a person takes another person's life, it's not because he was forced or "made" to do it by some outside force; they made a conscious decision, no matter how deranged, to end the life of another. Nobody could foresee what this person did, and it's not the fault of video games, movies, or whatever for not predicting this.

(And now for some self advertisement [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.252556-The-Grand-Theft-Auto-Conundrum-an-essay-on-violent-video-games] :D I did an article on this sort of thing before.)

If he can blame video games with that logic could you not with the same logic blame Americans? (No offense) or perhaps you could blame gravity for people that have tripped and hurt themselves. If a person is unstable they are unstable maybe he was bullied perhaps? Maybe he had problems at home? To hell with doing accurate research why not just jump on an already misguiding overcrowded bandwagon. Every time someone out there blames video-games I just remind myself what they're really saying is they're too ignorant to know exactly happen. Maybe it was aliens from a distant planet using mind control rays. After all it's equally logical.
IT WAS ALIENS! Yeah, you could play the blame game, but really, he was mentally ill. There's not much more to it.

Also, nice avatar.
Why thank you, I appreciate it.

I don't think there is any evidence of this guy even being connected with games... He's just a crazy righty. And holy shit does his mugshot look crazy.

it's always the people with the most respectable resume who go bat shit insane like this over videogames, just like ole Jackie T. we have someone else who's used his gifted mediation abilities to save people, and they descend into vitriolic rants about gaming, the shooter in arizona was already mentally unstable, i doubt videogames pushed him over the edge did they have a hand in it, who can say, the only one who knows why Jared Loughner snapped is Jared Loughner, and until the trial we won't know either

Of course, nobody knows why Loughner did what he did. A Wall Street Journal report [http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703791904576075851892478080.html?mod=WSJ_hp_LEFTTopStories] portrays him as a deeply disturbed young man whose troubled behavior can be traced back several years, to at least the tenth grade. And while everybody has an opinion, O'Dowd can't be dismissed as just another noisemaker with a website. He played a role in establishing the Belfast Agreement in the Northern Ireland peace process, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by University College Dublin and was made an adjunct professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. The official launch of IrishCentral.com in 2009 was attended by Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen.
Brian Cowen is the most reviled man in my country; a liar, a buffoon and an incompetent.

This guy's record aside, he's still a totally out of touch moron that's looking to rally a few votes.

His patron Cowen will end his political career in disgrace soon enough.

I find his waving of the Irish flag as this man's platform distasteful on this recent event. It's insane to think that a sane, rational person would so hooked on games as to take part in a shooting.

Another callow politician bullying our medium yet again.

Just because he has some impressive background dosn't make him right, and to be honest UCD is a second rate college, for those who couldn't get into one of the good colleges like trinity, NUI manooth or DCU. I hate how our country spawns these bigots :(

oh and Brian Cowen is probaly the most mediocre prime minister we've ever had, him being there means as much as a baked potatoe being there, also he looks even worse in person, freaky huge lips on him, scary

This all just makes me wonder, have these idiots actually ever played a videogame for themselves? I mean they preach about how gaming is an evil that turns you into a monster-looney psychotic killer who is incapable of remorse.

Though if they'd really bothered and actually played a game they'd know they were just pieces of competetive fun, almost like a GAME.

Is this what they think videogames are like? Because sometimes I wonder. I think the only proper solution is to ignore these dumbfucks. Ah well, guess we've got another 500 replies thread incoming.
This picture made me lol.

OT: I'd like to say I didn't see that coming, but it's hard to not see a giant bomb flying at you saying "IT'S VIDEO GAMES FAULT!". I guess people need a scapegoat, and videogames are the scapegoat of about every politician out there.

Yes, as has been mentioned above, there were definitely crazy murderers in the world before computers were invented.

NUH UH! Name two! And any you can think of don't count because I say so!

OT: This guy O'Dowd is a fucking hack. Not surprised at all by the gross oversimplifications and use of fear, half-truths and flat-out lies to make his point. *sigh* It hurts to be a journalist when I see crap like this "columnist's" writing floating around.

I'm still kind of wondering what the fuck the ancient Romans have to do with violent video games and movies.

Addendum: I'm glad to see the comment I submitted to rebut his points never made onto the website. Awesome display of journalistic integrity, irishcentral dot com.

This man is an idiot. If anyone is to blame it's Sarah Palin and her "surveyor's marks" (targets). You know what would be awesome? Getting Angelus from the Buffyverse and letting him loose on this guy. It would be funny.
Seriously you are sounding just like the irish guy up there. you want to know who was to blame for this? It was the cazy shooter. The guy was insane, a number of things could have caused it but it looks like the reason he shot the congresswoman was because he went to one of her rallies and she didn't answer the question that he asked her, in 2007.

He could technically say he was told by Ba'alzamon to do it.

People were probobley thinking it had something to do with his childhood, or something, but as soon as this guy sees he plays video games that changes everything.
The man was driven crazy by games.
Those people were killed by games.
That trigger was pulled by games.
It doesn't matter how many certificates you get or if you are a big journalist, you can still be a fucking idiot.
