Someone in my Drama class asked me what I meant when I said Irony.

I had no idea what to say.

Try at put it into words.

I want to see what we come out with...

When something happens that is the opposite of expected.

I think that's good.

It's like when your house burn down because of some stress-relief candels...

It is a situation that contradicts one's expectations.

Irony is a circumstance that goes against itself in an often humorous way.

For example: Traffic jam when you're already late: NOT IRONY (looking at you, Alanis Morissette)

Trafic jam when you're already late to a meeting on how to improve the city's road systems in order to avoid said jams: Irony.

Old man winning the lottery and dying the next day: Unlucky, not ironic.

First recorded tsunami hitting the same harbor that housed a ship named Bringer of Good Fortune: Ironic.

The difference between what is expected to happen, compared to what the real outcome is, being the polar opposite.

We learned that definition in fifth grade English class...

The irony in my life, I intensly dislike (because hate is such a strong word) small children. The only job I can see myself in is that of a Primary School teacher.

Irony is when you die from choking on a low-fat potato chip, which you ate because you wanted to live to see your grandchildren grow up.

Well it's funny for me...

A few people have described irony as saying one thing but implying the opposite, which is true, but it shouldn't be confused with sarcasm. Because the meaning of sarcasm is so clear from the tone, it's not real irony; irony should be able to slip under the radar of anyone who doesn't notice the double meaning.

As bender would say, "the use of a word for anything other than it's literal intention, now that's, irony!"

Irony is one of the two words I correct people on when they misuse it(karma is the other one if you really care).
