Irrational Fears

I have an irrational fear of becoming paralysed. There's something about the outside chance that you might take a nasty fall or step out into the road at the wrong time and never have any sensation below your waist again that freaks me out. It wasn't really made any better when reading about various Paralympians' stories last summer. For example, the captain of the British men's wheelchair rugby squad was confined to a wheelchair at age 20 at university by a dodgy rugby tackle. One simple mistake, and he never walked again.

I know it's a stupid thing to fear, and that spinal cord injuries that severe are quite rare, but it's still something I'm acutely conscious of. Particularly when a lorry gets too close for comfort to me when I'm on my bike!

I have a fear of fish, not sharks fish. I personally love eating the little bastard's but I can not touch one for the life of me.

You're very trusting in the people who cook your food. What if the fish isn't quite dead yet when you're putting it in your mouth? Perhaps your tongue gives it just the moisture it needs to revive from its near-death trauma? Why it could give a little leap then and there in a bid for freedom. Or it could get hungry itself and decide to nibble at your tonsils. I must say you're certainly jumping in at the deep end with your fear, aren't you?

On topic: I used to be deeply cynophobic (afraid of dogs) for my tweens and early teens. I got over it but still am not a great fan of dogs, largely due to having a mild fur allergy.

Tape measures. Those metal ones that retract automatically.

I cut my finger open on one as a child and haven't been able to stand them since.

Also heights, but I consider that a very rational fear.

If I was ever stranded in an ocean with no land in sight I'm pretty sure I would rather drown myself than try to swim to shore, I mean have you seen the creepy shit that lives there, it's ridiculous, not to mention things like shipwrecks. I cannot stand the sight of images like Cthulhu or a giant squid or basking sharks without feeling all nervous.

I'm afraid of public toilets...not necessarily urinals, but if I have to actually come into physical contact with the thing...just...no.

Also, electrical equipment. ANY electrical equipment. Outlets, wires, the backs of TVs, those joke shock toys, anything that can create even a spark. This is thanks to my step father asking me to help him with an AC unit in our house and he told me it was all turned off, I reached in to plug in something he told me to, and I was tossed back by the jolt and saw arc hit my hand.

I also used to fear sleeping since I thought there was a chance I wouldn't wake up. Dying in your sleep may seem peaceful to some people, but personally I'd at least want to know why I died even if I won't remember it...because I'm dead.

Ha, I've got a lot of fears...some definitely irrational, some maybe not so much. First, I'm a major germaphobe, but nowhere near as bad as I used to be, then there's my fear of darkness (more specifically outside and in forests, which sucks because I live in a forest), my fear of rejection, my fear of needles, my fear of losing everything I hold dear...That one's probably pretty rational though



I also have a friend who's afraid of small dogs because she's afraid they'll bite the tendons out of her ankles.

I'm not shy, and I'd say I have a decent self-confidence, but I'm still terrified of rejection.. Does that sound contradictory?

Fear of Wasps, Bees and Hornets.... It don't help that they always buzz near my ears...thinking there going to fly in my ear and sting the inside of my head but any form of nicotine drives them into a frenzy too so a nice relaxing smoke on a summer evening can be interrupted by a wasp on a nicotine frenzy. Also yes additionally they do make my Fallout New Vegas playthroughs all the more enjoyable -_-

Your an evil bastard, but luckily I only eat them fried, and only strips of fish. No sardine's or tuna.

Kinda, unless you have been hurt by rejection and do not want to experience it again, which would make sense.

Same here, but not as much seaweed as the other unknown horrors that dwell in the sea.

What else could be down there? It genuinely terrifies me.

I also have a crippling fear of open bodies of water. A fear that I thought I was making good progress on, until I saw that photo.

My God... how does such an abomination come to be?

OT: I have a fear of music boxes. If, in fact, you go to google and type up "fear of music boxes", you will find I'm the only person in the world who is afraid of this, and I've posted about it before.

Something about the music makes me uncomfortable.

I also have an irrational fear of bees and small children. I do not like bees, and if one gets into a place that I am at, I will start sweating and hiding from it, nearly moved to tears by it.

Small children just scare me, in general. I'm sort of comfortable around one, but most children, I'm just scared of.

Irrational fears, some may not be, but I do have them.

Apart from almost every single thing already brought up in this thread already: asking for help and feeling like I'm being pressured for whatever reason, which I feel like by just being asked to do something basically. I just freeze up and want to not be anywhere near people for the rest of the week. A week is exaggerating a bit and feeling the need to clarify that brings up yet another one, fear of being missunderstood.

This isn't THAT irrational (I don't think): Stinging insects.
Bees, wasps, hornets, you name it, I'm just TERRIFIED of being stung. I get my shots and I know a sting probably won't hurt THAT much but still... I haven't got my allergy test and I've never been stung so as far as I know, I COULD DIE if I get stung.
I don't really think that way, I just use that to justify my fear.

I can't drive a car. ATV's, trucks, SUV's are all fine but for some reason I am a nervous wreck behind the wheel of a car.

I also have a fear of crowds.

Well I have a fear of spider for which I don't know why (I remember I used to be fine around spiders as a kid) and fear of getting my internet cut for breaking the rules. I had no internet for a month due to the mess up on switching network provider (how am I suppose to know you weren't suppose to called them to stop it if you want internet with the new provider) and I can tell you for one thing, having no internet is beyond hell for me (also I get no live tv before you asked)!
