So I just found out my girlfriend has irritable bowel syndrome. I don't really know much about it but after looking into it a bit I have found that there is no cure.

If anyone has any experience with IBS, is this true? I have heard conflicting things to be honest and if anyone knows anything about this or even has it then I would appreciate the info.

I don't think you should ask a gaming forum about this sort of thing. And if you suspect she has IBS, don't do anal :p
Well the Escapist is usually pretty good, just wanted to know more about it really. Yeah the doctor said she had it, I presumed it was something that would pass with medication but I have heard that unfortunately that is not the case.

A doctor would be your best bet, not us. Unless there's a trained GP hiding somewhere on the Escapist...but the medical profession should be first port of call for anything health-related.

There's a reason it's called a Syndrome.
Syndrome means long-term, if not permanent, condition that can't be dealt with using a quick fix.

My experience with IBS is pretty limited, but the 2 people that I know that have it don't recieve any medication for it and no treatment, apart from recommendations regarding their diet and such.

Hate to say it dude, but you're in this for the long run.

*ahem* I'm not a doctor, but lets not hope this causes you to lose interest in her. If it does that relationship wasn't gona last anyway. And as a girl, I would never let anyone do anal with me... It's painful and unsanitary, not to mention messy.

Go ask a doctor, I'm sure it's nothing too serious.

Funny you say that, my sister suffers from it, my girlfriends bro suffers from it, and my girlfriend (a doctor has written a research paper on the issue! At the points when I was actually listening to what she was saying, the following information filtered through to my thick skull.

Its a fairly common issue, often brought about due to high levels of stress. The reason there is no 'cure' is that there is no ascertainable reason as to why it occurs, and it will vary from person to person. It is very much the case sometimes that when Docs can't be bothered to do the leg work, they will tell someone they have IBS just so they don't have to keep seeing a patient who isn't getting better. (sad, but true) It is quite often the case that an idividual will simply be allergic to a simple foodstuff, and with a strict diet, they can get around their IBS.

I have been told lots of things can make it better, such as anything that will de-stress your missus. Herbal and peppermint tea works well, and like a mentioned, working out what agrees with her with regard to food is useful.

I'm no doctor here, so don't get me wrong but I have seen it, and it can be a really horrible thing for a person to go through, be there and be supportive of her (I'm sure you will be anyway) and she will appreciate it.

Also, one last thing, it can go away as easily as it starts, so even though there's no easy answer to fix it, it may just go away in its own time.

I have a PHD in kicking your ass... [small]cookie for the reference[/small]
But I don't think that would help in this situation.

OT: Yeah, doctor would be the way to go. Even if there is a GP here, the help they could provide would be extremely limited.

IBS comes in many shapes and sizes, I've got some experience dealing with it. Pretty much you're gonna have to learn to live with it. The only treatment I really know of is figuring out what foods make it worse and avoid them. For me its bad news if I eat or drink things with too much processed sugars (High fructose corn syrup) but for some reason the simple sugars (glucose) are fine, so a lot of soda triggers it but most energy drinks are fine.

A friend of mine also has IBS. She says it's a major pain in the ass (pun absolutely not intended, but that's the best phrase I could think of) but it's manageable, usually, provided she avoids food that sets her off. Every so often (I think about once or twice a week at most, during "normal" periods) she gets attacks of diarrhoea and has to spend a long time (I don't know exactly how long) in the bathroom. She also suffers from abdominal pain.

However, according to a recent Scientific American article - that I can't find now - there's a treatment, perhaps even a cure (I can't recall), under development, so in a few years the situation might be better.
