3D is nearly upon us, but I put this to you? Is it just a waste of time. For starters it causes health problems ( http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=4442 ) which by the by can be increased by constant frame changes and high speed objects, but also, if say you want to watch football in 3D with all your mates, Billy late will have to watch it in double vision if there aren't enough 3d glasses to go around, meaning you'll probably have to watch it in regular High Defenition anyway.

The reason I bring it up is because it's beginning to enter the video game industry too, an industry based around teenagers, children (who are both more seseptible to above health problems), lengthy sessions of screen looking at too close, normally with speed and a fair few sudden changes is screen layout.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a guy who learns by doing. I just think it's stupid.

Hopefully 3D and motion controls are just fads, they don't do anything to contribute to the game experience so I will not be saddened if they disappear

I hate it, it gives me massive headaches, the glasses are awkward and annoying (doubly so if like me you wear normal glasses at the same time), it's hardly ever used right, it's a stupid gimmick that I hope dies an early death.

I'm going to go with the boring answer and say we should just wait and see.

I've never much cared for any 3D technology. I'm just going to ignore it, just as I've ignored Apple for years.

Yep, 3D is a waste of time... 6D is the only way to go, now all we need is to figure out what dimension 5 and 6 are and we'll be living the good life.

When I get back from work after a hard day, I just want to relax in front of the computer/TV and not even pay attention particularly to it. I don't want things popping out at me.

I don't want to be immersed 90% of the time.

I don't care about 3D, in some cases it's nice, but really as a once off thing or it would get old very quickly. Virtual reality would be worth it, 3d is a waste of time.

Yes, it is.
It basically adds nothing worth adding, imo.
What they should focus on is virtual reality, 3D is not that interesting.

That risk doesn't seem to be any more prevalent than it is in current games according to the article.

, but also, if say you want to watch football in 3D with all your mates, Billy late will have to watch it in double vision if there aren't enough 3d glasses to go around, meaning you'll probably have to watch it in regular High Defenition anyway.
You can't blame the concept for that. The reason there wouldn't be enough 3-D glasses to go around would only be because you failed to get them (It's not like they're expensive.).

The reason I bring it up is because it's beginning to enter the video game industry too, an industry based around teenagers, children (who are both more seseptible to above health problems), lengthy sessions of screen looking at too close, normally with speed and a fair few sudden changes is screen layout.
Have you ever read the first few pages of a game manual? They have almost the exact same warning as is printed in that article.

Photosensitive seizure warning and other health risks

Some viewers may experience an epileptic seizure or stroke when exposed to certain flashing images or lights contained in certain television pictures or video games. If you suffer from, or have a family history of epilepsy or strokes, please consult with a medical specialist before using the 3D function.

Even those without a personal or family history of epilepsy or stroke may have an undiagnosed condition that can cause photosensitive epileptic seizures.

Pregnant women, the elderly, sufferers of serious medical conditions, those who are sleep deprived or under the influence of alcohol should avoid utilising the unit's 3D functionality.

If you experience any of the following symptoms, stop viewing 3D pictures immediately and consult a medical specialist:
Altered vision
Lightheadedness
Dizziness
Involuntary movements such as eye or muscle twitching
Confusion
Nausea
Convulsions
Cramps
Disorientation
Children and teenagers may be more likely than adults to experience these symptoms. Parents should monitor their children and ask whether they are experiencing these symptoms.

Viewing 3D television may also cause motion sickness, perceptual after effects, disorientation, eye strain and decreased postural stability. It is recommended that users take frequent breaks to lessen the potential of these effects. If your eyes show signs of fatigue or dryness or if you have any of the above symptoms, immediately discontinue use of this device and do not resume using it for at least thirty minutes after the symptoms have subsided.

Watching TV while sitting too close to the screen for an extended period of time may damage your eyesight. The ideal viewing distance should be at least three times the screen height. It is recommended that the viewer's eyes are level with the screen.

Watching TV while wearing 3D glasses for an extended period of time may cause a headache or fatigue. If you experience a headache, fatigue or dizziness, stop viewing TV and rest.

Do not use the 3D glasses for any other purpose than for viewing 3D television. Wearing the 3D glasses for any other purpose (as general spectacles, sunglasses, protective goggles, etc.) may be physically harmful to you and may weaken your eyesight.

Viewing in 3D may cause disorientation for some viewers. Accordingly, DO NOT place your TV television near open stairwells, cables, balconies, or other objects that can be tripped over, run into, knocked down, broken or fallen over.

Photosensitive Seizure Warning
A very small percentage of people may experience a seizure when exposed to certain visual images, including flashing lights or patterns that may appear in video games. Even people who have no history of seizures or epilepsy may have an undiagnosed condition that can cause these "photosensitive epileptic seizures" while watching video games.

These seizures may have a variety of symptoms, including lightheadedness, altered vision, eye or face twitching, jerking or shaking of arms or legs, disorientation, confusion, or momentary loss of awareness. Seizures may also cause loss of consciousness or convulsions that can lead to injury from falling down or striking nearby objects.

Immediately stop playing and consult a doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Parents should watch for or ask their children about the above symptoms - children and teenagers are more likely than adults to experience these seizures.

The risk of photosensitive epileptic seizures may be reduced by taking the following precautions:
Play in a well-lit room
Do not play when you are drowsy or fatigued
If you or any of your relatives have a history of seizures or epilepsy, consult a doctor before playing.
I'll leave you to draw the parallels.

Everyone either dislikes it or says something like "It's pretty interesting once in a while". So right now, as long as technology doesn't advance beyond 'Those Glasses', I don't think it's more than a gimmick.

It can be cool every now and then, after all back in the fifties 3D was the 'in' thing to do and so it feels kind of like a modernised version of a retro trend.
I'm not sure whether that makes it cool or not but still it's a fact.

Overall though, I think some major movies are a little too obsessed with the 3D and as a result load their scenes so much for 3D that sometimes they forsake other things. Worse still, 3D can result in the tragic realisation that after watching say, Coraline, on the big screen in 3D (a visual orgasm if I ever saw one) once you get it on DVD... part of the magic is gone.

So overall, 3D is not a bad thing but long ago in the sixties it was considered a dead technology and now it seems to be resurfacing and it still kind of feels like a waste. So while 3D made movies like Avatar even better there is no denying that encapsulating on 3D isn't really helping the industry move forward.
Remember, it should be about how we watch them, it should be the movies themselves that we elaborate on.

I agree and I'm 22. Many would say I'm young but the teenagers who are likely the majority of the escapist population would consider me old. I consider me old ^^; Another set of old people though are people from the 1970's...which are another group of people who experienced 3D films
