I do love my coffee. I drink it daily and I average about a pot a day. 4 cups really isn't that bad. I had a coworker that used to drink about two to three pots a day. As long as you're not shaking from the coffee I say you're fine.

1: No, but I drink soda with about as much caffiene.
2: Depends on the demands on my attention, varies between one and six cans a day.
4: Negatory. When I was in school I'd down three or four liters of coke daily just so I could function.
I'm like you in the Coke addiction regard, but I try to cut down on it cause it's burning a hole in my pocket. I still usually down three cans and then a few cups on the side per day though >.>

OP: The important thing to remember is that people react differently to these things. Although, caffiene overdose could cause serious problems for you, it might not, because you just might have a higher tolerance for it.

Still, I'd consult a doctor just to be safe.

4 isn't that much, but three before work...wow. That's dedication.

I never have more than three cups a day, but my coffee is generally very strong. Too much caffeine has been linked to psychosis, something to consider.

Dunno about cups but I drink 2 pots before noon. Four cups doesn't sound like that much to me.

4 cups is normal from what I've heard, but 3 before work is maybe overdoing it? Unless you work at a 24 hour fish factory.

I have at least one coffee every day. Today I had three cups, one cup of ground coffee in the morning and two instant coffees at work.

I am a regular coffee drinker, recently a friend asked me how much much I drink a day, I told him 4 cups (3 before I get to work and one in my lunch break). He told me that that was mental. These are my questions.

I'm honestly interested on the general public opinion on this.

No considering, when i drink 4 cups it is a slow day for me. My Coffee mug holds twice the amount of coffee than a normal mug does, and I fill that mug 3 or 4 times. Some days I will eventually drink a whole pot of coffee by my self.

Like a lot of people have stated, it depends on how big the cups are and how strong the coffee is. I usually down one cup a day, sometimes two, but my cups are pretty large...

Meh, I've had upwards of 1g of pure caffeine (tastes really bitter btw, disgusting stuff...) in one setting, comparable to 7-ish cups, and noticed no ill effects. It really does differ from person to person though. By itself, caffeine is harmless up to 3-ish grams over 24 hours unless you have some sort of heart condition. The main actions of caffeine are as an adenosine inhibitor (which will make you feel awake, but will result in a "crash" after high doses). This also has the very noticeable side effect of twitchiness and irregular heart beat at high doses. Contrary to popular opinion, caffeine doesn't cause tachycardia (fast hear beat). One fun use of it is before exercise, as it will increase your endurance by a fair bit.
Anyway, enough rambling about my drug of choice. 4 cups of coffee are approximately 600mg of caffeine, which is not dangerous unless you have a heart condition. The only ill effects you might notice are in your digestive tract, as coffee isn't all that great for you. As far as addiction is concerned, there really isn't any. You might feel crappy for a day or two after quitting cold turkey, but that's it. You will build up tolerance though, so moderation might be advisable.

I feel compelled to leave this here:

OT: No, I don't drink coffee. Never acquired a taste for it.

The scientific community is still on the fence about the overall effects coffee has on people.
Coffee consumption has been shown to have minimal or no impact, positive or negative, on cancer development; however, researchers involved in an ongoing 22-year study by the Harvard School of Public Health state that "the overall balance of risks and benefits [of coffee consumption] are on the side of benefits." For example, men who drank six or more cups of coffee per day were found to have a 20% reduction in developing prostate cancer. Other studies suggest coffee consumption reduces the risk of being affected by Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, heart disease, diabetes mellitus type 2, cirrhosis of the liver, and gout. A longitudinal study in 2009 showed that those who consumed a moderate amount of coffee or tea (3-5 cups per day) at midlife were less likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer's disease in late-life compared with those who drank little coffee or avoided it altogether. It increases the risk of acid reflux and associated diseases. Most of coffee's beneficial effects against type 2 diabetes are not due to its caffeine content, as the positive effects of consumption are greater in those who drink decaffeinated coffee. The presence of antioxidants in coffee has been shown to prevent free radicals from causing cell damage. A recent study showed that roast coffee, high in lipophilic antioxidants and chlorogenic acid lactones, protected primary neuronal cell cultures against hydrogen peroxide-induced cell death.

I drink 1-3 cups a day but when I worked night shift a couple years ago I drank 5-6 really large cups per day.

I can't really say if 4 cups is too much, it all depends on your overall health and what your personal risks are associated with the negative effects of coffee.

4 cups? Jesus, compared to how much my family drinks, that's really nothing. Then again, caffeine doesn't seem to affect us like it does other people.

Used to drink 4 cups a day during college. Now I'm down to 1-2.
Depends on how much sleep I got, so mid semester My coffee intake usually rises.
