Is 7/10 a low score to give Killzone 2?

Edge magazine recently published a review of Killzone 2. I felt it was quite balanced. They admired it's "immaculate craft", enjoyed its multiplayer, yet had to mark it down a little because its "imagination... barely exists." Their, subjective, opinion; right? However, much of their readership must of skipped over this text to the score:

7/10

Surely, a misprint...

Actually, that is not a low/poor score for Edge. It is more like an 8/10 for others. It thereby enables them to only rarely use 10 for something truly revolutionary (there being no such thing as a perfect game, but obvious progress in the medium of videogaming needs to be rewarded). Even a game that scores 5/10 isn't a "don't buy" proposition, just read the review that accompanies it.

So, you can form your own opinion here is the review:

Yet, it seems that this 'opinion' has caused substantial controversy, with some accusing the Magazine of 'attention seeking elitism'.

So, just to make the subject of this thread crystal clear, I am asking if you mind that Killzone 2 has been given 7/10? Will it affect your purchasing decision? Will you wait and see it in action before you pre-order it? Are you not bothered as you only want it for Multiplayer? Is Edge being elitist, or is it getting flamed by a lot of ignorant PS3 fanboys who have only played the demo?

p.s. I did a search for reactions to Edge's review, but found nothing...

Edge always seems to review games lower than most. I guess it's their own rating system though - Killzone 2's been getting a lot of 10/10s, yet it's far from perfect.

7/10 = B.

B = Good.

Is B a low mark to be given away nowadays? I wish I had some B's once in a while in maths.

Pah, this won't be affecting me as I:

1) Don't pay attention to reviews.
2) Don't own a PS3.
3) I'm sick of generic FPS's.
Actually that's a C. An 8 would be a B. And i don't really care what Killzone gets, since I'll never play it. But Edge is known for being tougher with their numbers than most other reviwers.

I think Killzone 2 when it finally comes out will suffer from Halo 3 syndrome with everyone saying how awesome it is and a few months later "meh it was ok".

Also we need more reviews that are down to earth...seems like every big title in this console generation gets big numbers...

EVERY Killzone review is getting more hate from PS3 owners than anyone else. One place gave it a 10/10 and still had PS3 owners bitching. Of course there were the cretinous xbox fanboys there too, but this is hilarious.

This is part of why I'm not a big fan of the numerical review system. It's hard to really quantify what really is a 7 vs. a 6 or a 3 vs. a 4. Even an 8 vs. a 9. I think that having numbers with arbitrary standards for determining what numbers they are makes things confusing and ambiguous.

Honestly, I would feel better with a scale of Really bad to Really good, or the escapist's buy it/rent it/leave it system, because they reduce the kind of confusing idea of whether or not a 7 is considered good or not.

Current rating systems make a 7/10(or 3/5) a near failure.
Anything under 7/10(or 3/5) means "don't buy this game".

if you guys really care about what someone else thinks about a game you should really have your brains scanned. the way i see it, i look at a review and if the game seems fun i will play it. if i like it, im happy. if the game isnt fun, i sell it. plain and simple. what some pretension jerkoff at a gaming magazine who probably couldnt design a game if his life depended on it thinks about the game really doesnt shift my opinion one way or another. i only use them as a way to find a game i think is fun, but usually i just ask some friends and such.

I tried the demo and was bored by it. It's just another generic shooter. Pretty, by any standards, but still just another shooter. Not so much a Halo killer as it is another Halo.

My search for a single stand-out title to justify my PS3 purchase continues. Until then, whenever anyone asks, I say "Wall-E".

Rating systems by magazines are never a real rating. Whens that last time you saw them ran anything below a 5 in a magazine. They are chickens that are afraid of rating a game for what it deserves. That is why I find ZP, Jeremy Clarkson etc and a few others interesting because when they look at something they don't sit there and powder it up for you. They become brutally honest whether it is good or bad.

I think having tougher standards for reviewing is a positive step towards legitimizing game criticism. I was looking at a recent issue of Gamepro, and the first 4-5 reviews were all perfect scores. Granted, I haven't played all of those games, but they can't all be classics, can they?

Zero Punctuation has helped, albeit in a humourous way, by picking apart sacred cows like Zelda, Halo, etc. Full disclosure: I haven't played Killzone 2, but I respect Edge for having the balls to call it like they see it instead of simply looking at Metacritic and basing their score on the average.
