Is a DS worth it?

First, a little back-story, I haven't owned a Gameboy, or any handheld since my Gameboy Color over 6+ years ago, and I only used that for the first two Pokemon generations. I've been considering grabbing one now, and possibly trying Platinum and Emerald, but I also want to know if there's other games that make it worth it.

So far from what I've heard Zelda: Spirit Tracks and Scribblenauts look interesting.

But is it worth it? And what other games should I get?

DS is somewhere between a portable SNES and more powerful N64. I'd definitely say go for a used DS Lite as they are cheap enough and the games are great.

Stay away from Phantom hourglass though, that game fails in every way that Spirit Tracks succeeds.

I've had a ds for a couple of years now and its great fun, but you might want to check out the games first to see if you would like any.

I have the DSi and DSlite which I use for in-trading between three Pokemon games [Diamond, Heart Gold and, Soul Silver]

Being a part of the 0.2 percent who import, I also picked up a copy of JUMP Ultimate Stars which is basically SSB featuring anime characters. Scribblenaughts was alright but, Spirit Tracks made me face-palm. I haven't tried the older Zelda title on DS though. The DS port of Final Fantasy III was really good too if you're into that sort of thing. If you're in getting a DS for Star Fox or, Metroid though, good luck on your search because I've not yet been able to find one.

I love Scribblenauts, and Pokemon, and Spirit Tracks. Go for it, I doubt you'll regret it.
I haven't played the Pokemon titles for DS. Are they as accessible as Blue & Red or are they a much larger pain in the ass?

If you are an old rpg fan...than most definetely. Harvest moon, Rune factory, Chrono Trigger, secret of Mana. The list goes on. Lots of crap...but lots of remade classics. Also you can play GBA titles in the DS.

In my experience it seems like it's totally worth it at first - and you have fun for a while, but ultimately once you get past what you like, it's just another damn Wii.
My thoughts exactly. There are some fun games on there (Lost in Blue, Final Fantasy 3, etc) but I found that after a month or so... meh. A lot of games don't seem to use the touch screen effectively, the same as many games for the wii don't utilize the movement stuff properly.

What's the deal with Golden Sun? Is there anything it can be compared to?

Golden Sun 1 and 2 are one of the most epic RPG's that i ever played so the 3rd GS game on the DS will be an epic RPG too :D

I've had my orginal one since launch and while the thing is a tank I'd probably recommend a DSlite as it is less bulky.

I'd recommend the 3 Castlevania titles(all excellent action RPGs with tons to do),the Phoenix Wright series and if your into JRPGs Kingdom Hearts:368/2 Days and FF3/4DS are excellent. The Mario and Luigi Game isn't too bad either.

Go for it, get a Lite, if you have Gameboy games. I also recommend Elite Beat Agents. So fun, so addicting. Plus the songs are catchy.

Number of games i like on it: pretty damn small
Interesting peripherals and application type things: very small

BUT the price is pretty low, so if you've got an income then it can still be worth it? There are maybe 6 or so DS games that were actually worth getting for me, but they kept me well entertained on many a train and plane trip. And the older ones also play gb advance games and there are a few of those that are pretty fun as well.

FF tactics advance 2, phoenix wright, castlevania, trauma centre, world ends with you, harvest moon, some of the mario games, pokemon - if these tickle your fancy then maybe it's for you.

Oh, but do not forget the PSP. It's a little pricier, but there has been some Top Shit coming out in recent years, especially if you're an RPG fan: dissidea, persona, suikoden (or wait, was that DS? been a while), patapon
