I actually don't mind. Fanfiction can be about whatever people want things to be. Even if things involve murder, rape, or the complete misinterpretation of established characters/people. Did she come out and say that a fanfiction involving women/womyn being abused as an awful story that should be banned throughout? I mean, it's not necessarily a nice thing to make a story about killing a random person, but it is what it is: A story. I really don't know much about this lady or Gearbox, but if someone likes something that doesn't hurt someone else, emotionally or physically, in real life, then it should be fine.

Hmm, was that understandable? I'm still not that well versed in the written English language.

Two, by that logic, any of the death threats she has gotten, can be considered a joke, by that logic.
She reacted less hysterically to actual threats than you did to a fanfiction about a third party.

I don't think she should condone this and I don't either, but that alone should tell you something about yuor response.

Writing fiction depicting the murder of a guy? Sure, why not? It's fiction. If we were talking about something that supported systemic violence or racism or whatever, that's one thing, like if Randy was a black guy and he was enslaved, blah blah, it'd be disturbing. But that's not the case here.

Also, is fan fiction that big of a deal? Isn't this kinda like getting mad at some shit someone wrote in her/his journal?

This is basically the same old "why is it okay for a girl to hit a guy, but not a guy to hit a girl?" argument in a different dress. I don't know why it really needs explaining. As some commentator once put it on rockpapershotgun: "If it doesn?t start out equal, then turnabout is not fair play."
The problem I have with that saying is why is gender the most important part?

Isn't the crux of the issue someone strong shouldn't attack someone weaker than them?

What does it matter if it's a man hitting a woman or woman hitting man or man hitting man or woman hitting woman?

Apparently, it's being promoted by Anita Sarkeesian.

And anything she does is bad.

But seriously, promoting this shit is probably in bad taste. I find it telling, however, that this is literally sauce for the gander (whether she intended it that way or not) and the people in arms about it lack the self-awareness to even notice.

This is a thing? She didn't threaten anyone or anything, the story was a joke, hell people have posted much, much worse about EA's CEO and this is a forum, not a fictional story.

Fuck,if we are criticising her words, can we just leave it to her actual work, which there is plenty to criticise about anyway?

There is hypocrisy all over this topic none of you would complain if it wasn't Anita that liked it and just some random person especially if it was a guy and it is unprofessional and hypocritical for her to post that on her tumbler when she would be railing against it if someone made it that Pitchford killed her for her opinion on Duke Nukem or her Tropes vs Women videos and then he linked it to his tumblr (does he have a tumblr account? if not his hypothetical one) and said its surreal but he kind of likes it hell i bet the media would rip him a new one just for that.

Off topic: on her tumblr page that was linked is no one else even slightly infuriated by the patronizing and condensing nature of her other posts especially that flow chart of "sarcastic" and "witty" responses to any complaint as just trolling or made by some uneducated dudebro that has no legitimate understanding of the concept of feminism. I love the one that says that she is immune to criticism due to the cyber bullying your a shitty human being congrats OP they just proved your point. i most of you can't understand a lot of people's dislikes of Anita and her supporters and her supporters it is because of this mentality from them that she cant be wrong and that there is no legitimate criticism of her which there is but not all criticism of her is legit but can't we all just find some middle ground on the topic of Anita

I've got a great idea how about we just say:
I'll admit there is a problem with video games if you admit there is a problem with Anita.
or on the other hand
I'll admit there is a problem with Anita if you admit ther is a problem with video games.
Then we can work together as a community to solve our problems and then there will be no more fighting and there will be cake

This is more like "why is it okay for a girl to be amused by a guy getting hit but not okay for a guy to actually threaten to hit a girl?"

Anita is at best, endorsing the act here. This is being compared to people who have actively threatened her and the like.

Anita embodies all that is evil. When she says something it is the EXACT SAME THING as the worst things the "other side" has ever done.

I don't think I have a big enough group mentality for this. Though something interesting is I watched all her videos with my girlfriend and she rolled her eyes more then I did at them. She doesn't mind the existing trends that much, she just wants some games targeting females, which will be more possible when action isn't the main gameplay element. More conversations etc.

Hope that's not too derailing, I just thought it was interesting and I was certainly not going to make another thread just for that.

I don't give a shit. I'm not trying to prove anything, least of all to you.
You're so desperate to ignore the obvious reality that it's comical.
Fortunately for me, you're easily ignored. Welcome to the list.
Interesting. Someone questions your inability to provide evidence for an argument so you ignore them. Where have I seen that before?

I got flagged for saying that another person lacks empathy. The sad truth is we are living in a world where saying mean and vicious shit about celebrities and other people is entertainment. We really don't give a fuck about each other. People have an attitude online: "If you don't agree with me, then you must be destroyed."

Yes, this fanfic is stupid and silly. Most importantly, not a legit death threat. Yet, for people defending this as something perfectly acceptable is disgusting. When the rubber meets the road, you would feel differently if people were singing the praises of a story where someone walks up to you and kills you. That what I meant by a lack of empathy. People not caring about other people, until it happens to them.

As for Anita, if anyone taking her seriously, should be ashamed of themselves for being so gullible, or being a sucker for confirmation bias.

Example of Confirmation Bias: Videogames are sexist.
Mario Bros. is a successful videogame series.
Princess Peach gets kidnapped in every game.
That is sexist!
See! I told you videogames were sexist.

TBH, I didn't care much about TVW before and I don't care much now. I watched some of Anita's FF videos and sort of agreed with her on a lot of points and disagreed on some. This was back when her videos still allowed for comments and I questioned her on some of these things. While I don't think anything was ever resolved, I am of the belief she was operating in good faith based on the few responses I got. Still, the videos are mostly just...There. I still haven't watched TVWIVG part 3 and probably won't until I need it to be informed when people are making wild claims that are the exact opposite of what Anita actually said. The videos aren't all that big to me, period. and if not for an internet tantrum, they would have never been watched by most of the people complaining (who I'm convinced mostly haven't watched them or didn't bother to listen).

However comma, the basic idea isn't a bad one, whether your girlfriend likes them or not. Sexism in society is reflected in video games and the pervasive nature of these tropes is a resultant aspect of the culture that likely needs to be resolved before we see more female representation and games aimed at women.

Of course, the bigger one for the latter part is the notion that "chicks don't play games."

Almost everyone is a "sucker for confirmation bias." It's a deeply-routed mentality that you yourself are probably not immune to.

Your example, however, is a lousy one. It's intellectually dishonest and likely an attempt at a strawman. Her thought process, whether you like it or not, has been stated, backed up and defended. It does not resemble your false portrayal in the slightest, except in the sense both involve Mario and video games.

Yeah that sounds right to me, I didn't mind her basis at all because it's basically inclusion and that's a very good thing. Also I think of it more as chicks would play more games if the were the actual target audience, which there really should be games like that, just like other entertainment industries.

I hope we move towards that some point soon.

We are talking about a story that's essentialy a stealth-ventrant about executing people you do not like and nobody's posted this yet?

Shame on you, Escapist.
