Well, if it also shot shurikens...

...and had tits and was on fire...

...it wouldn't matter if it was practical or not.
I believe you need to lower your Yahtzee-Quoting percentage.

No, impractical. Any metallic object would instantly attract the electrons in the lightning-strike, meaning that in order for it to be effective you'd need to be in an empty room against an enemy covered in teaspoons.
I believe YOU need to lower your science and take a joke...... ^.^

What else can come out of a gun?..... thats practical?
Well, there's this middle east-only gun in development that shoots shoes.
100% guarantee that you'll get a statue somewhere, once you've fired it at a politician.

I see no reason why there won't be a weapon like this. There IS a market for it, after all.

If it was an electrified shotgun, with every pellet charged, then it would work.
Every pellet being charged would result in every pellet flying away from eachother, resulting in maybe one or two coming somwehere close to where uou were aiming
ladies and mentlegen, i bring you sawed-off shotgun v2
isn't weapon spread what shotguns are for?

Of course it wouldn't be practical but who gives a shit, it would look cool and make your enemies wet themselves and at the end of the day isn't that the dream of all fire-arms?

well considering that guns are made from metal you would probably be the biggest conducter in the room and end up shocking your self and lighting is uncontrollabe and strong so there would be alot of recoil and low aim

No, actually. Shotguns are for firing a large amount of metal at something. As it is, shotguns don't have quite the spray a lot of people think of when they imagine a shotgun. Although they don't have much power beyond... 20 m or so for most of them, before that, most of the pellets will hit what you aimed at. That's where the power comes from: not the spread, but by shooting many pellets at a fairly concentrated area. If all the pellets were charged, they would actually be pushed away from eachother. I'd be amazed if anything like that had an effective range of much beyond 20 feet or so, because if the pellets are spread out, there is little force on any particular area.

Who gives a shit whether it's practical or not? It shoots fucking lightning.
"Is a gun that shoots lightning practical?"

This post does. It's in the title.
Oh fine, I'll be serious then.

Of course a gun that shoots lighting would be impractical, it'll be utterly unpredicable in terms of accuracy (Hell, you'll be likely to end up shooting yourself before you ever hit your target) seeing as how lighting (Hell, electricity in general) tends to be attracted to:

-a) Metal, which your lighting-caster would most likely be made out of, and

-b) Grounded objects, which you will most likely be.

So in real life, a lightning gun would be just about the stupidest type of firearm (Okay, it wouldn't be a firearm, per se, but you get what I mean) you could make.

That better?

not really unfortunately... lightening would ark downwards... so you could like attach it onto a plane or something as an anti ground weapon...

I think not. Wait until personal defense companies begin producing suits of rubber armor and suddenly all 1st world nations adopt it into their military's arsenal, thus creating jobs and cash flow.

Practical for business. Not as a weapon. Besides, if all it takes is having somebody to wear a thin sheet of rubber to not die, then it's become useless, where as a bullet can kill you regardless or not if you have that rubber suit.
if it's not practical, no military will use it and therefore it will not boost any economies.
also, if all soldiers start wearing rubber suits... what fucking use is a lightning gun??

to answer the question, maybe, if you could direct it. but if you want to kill someone, just shoot him with bullets... it's easier and you don't run the risk of burning your eyebrows off...
besides, have you got any idea how much energy that would take? you'd have to carry around a battery the size of an aircraft carrier...

I think a stun trap the size of a briefcase which puts allot of lightning into the air around it is being tested right now.
Possibly the closest thing to a lighting gun we will get
