Question about the hypothetical. Does absence of butter affect butter-like things like margarine and "can't believe it's not" variety of non-butter?

As for foods, occasionally use it on bagels I guess. Popcorn too. And it probably is in a lot of other foods, butter is pretty good cooking ingredient.

A life without butter? A life without clutter! But you'd butter believe it makes my heart 'a flutter like a shutter on a stormy night. What's that you mutter? Your words do scutter without stutter as playful beetles on winter ice! Ow my arteries they utter a sigh, another pump too much, what is in this gutter i now lie? Butter is amazing. I love butter, and I like to think that butter loves me back. I don't actually eat that much of it though; I usually don't put it in sandwiches, I find it a bit greasy. Butter is best on a decent piece of bread and nothing else, especially if the bread's a little warm.

Man, I'm hungry now.

i have lived without butter, because i turned dairy intolarent for a while. swapped to soya milks and sunflower spread (pure brand, comes in sunflower, olive and soya) and it was fine. then tried goats milks/butter for a while when my intolarence reduced.

so far, i only have butter as a treat.
now i can eat a small amount of bread, i treat myself to a little plain toast with a little goats butter on. i use the sunflower pure to fry with, or grab the olive version. cook with the same for baking and so on, simply because i am now so used to it.
but i dont know if i would want to do without that little bit of a treat. it would probably be the last things i would want to eat, for my last meal i think....(depending on why im about to kick the bucket lol)
probably a slice of toast with real normal butter, a little crispy bacon (maybe 2 rashers) and maybe some cake or ice cream for afters lol

{SIGH} I can and do live without butter, or even margarine. I've had to cut all dairy from my diet as I have a combination of lactose intolerance plus a true dairy allergy plus it was affecting my IBS plus it was affecting my dermatitis.

It wouldn't be so bad if it was *just* dairy but with all my food sensitivities there are sooooo many things that I can't have anymore... having any of them mentioned is painful. {SIGH}

Just use everything in moderation and do sports, then it really shouldn't matter too much.

To answer the question, I use real butter for pastry and meat dishes. Sometimes oil can be used as a replacement when you're doing stir frying etc. But I don't think there's any beating the added taste butter gives many dishes.

I never find myself with a craving for butter, it usually sits in my fridge until I feel like it's going to go bad so I would not miss it.
It does work for cooking but it is far smellier then other cooking fats, also doesn't take heat so well. Goes for the real stuff made from milk anyway, there are plenty of chemical concoctions that get called butter and have no relation to it, in which case you are already living without butter.
