If there's nothing you can do to rectify the situation, and the only thing you are doing is sitting at home being tormented by your own thoughts, go for the alcohol. Sometimes people need to just stop caring for a while...at least in my experience.

Its not a way of slving a problem but in certain circumstances can put off thinking and feeling about those probelms untill a time when you can deal with them - Im not endorsing it but i see your point. My opinion - yes under a massive amount of guidelines, and no for everything else.

... God i need a pint now...

I drown a great deal of my problems in a tide of cheap whiskey. I know it's sad, but aside from talking to the person with which the problem is associated, it's the only method of coping with issues that works for me. It is a temporary fix, granted, but that state of blissful intoxicated ignorance is sometimes just what I need to simply stop dwelling upon problems, and that helps me a great deal; simply not thinking about things.

Edit: FYI I'm drunk now :D

I don't think its acceptable or a good way to solve your problems but christ it works!
Before I start just want to say I'm not ranting at you in particular gibboss.

As has been said the use of alcohol for... medicinal... purposes is relative to the situation. To say that it is unacceptable is childish (if I can use that phrase here), or seeing the world through the proverbial rose coloured glasses.

For example (coz I know you all love my examples), I drink to deal with the emotional problems caused by watching my two best friends shredded to pieces (so much so that they could only show half the face of one of them in the open-coffin at the funeral) which my brain decided I can deal with and refuses to block out. I also drink to stop the nightmare memories of a really nasty situation I found myself in with some unscrupulous people.

Would anyone deny me that? Especially when I've tried a number of psychologists and various other treatments (that is, I've not just gone straight to the bottle).

So chalk me up to the "dependant on the situation crowd". And hopefully my short-and-rambling example has helped convince people that it is ok to solve your problems this way.

Cheers

I don't think it's useful for solving your problems. When you sober up they're still there waiting for you to deal with. That said it is very useful in temporarily forgetting them.

It doesn't solve problems, it makes them go away. There's a difference. If it's the kind of problem that comes back, then you have to deal with it.

Who are we to judge what solves other peoples problems? Of course, I don't want to see anyone end up "in the gutter," but I'm in no position to judge what will help or hurt someone. I know people who are functioning drug addicts, and I know people who are a wreck and also sober as a judge, so again, who are we to judge whether using alcohol to resolve problems is acceptable or not?

It doesn't solve problems, it gives you more. My mother used alcohol to hide from her troubles and now her life is ruined, and she has problems that are much harder to solve. Honestly, it isn't the way to go.

Really. Name one who didn't use drugs?
Sonic

Optimus Prime
Sonic was so addicted to drugs. Those rings? I don't thing he collected them for no reason.

But back on topic: If your problem is needing to party, then alcohol is a perfectly viable solution. For other, more "real" problems, I would think that the best way to deal is to have a clear head and not submit to the sauce. Just my opinion.

Nothing wrong with it at all. There's no problem that can't be forgotten about by having a drink or ten.

I have mostly used alcohol as a problem solver when it comes to getting past messy break ups. It really is a good way to get back in the game. Though one should wait a bit before getting loaded or you run the risk of sitting around and moping and being told by your mates to have some fun.
Also, I've used it to distance myself from crappy exams etc.

But in the end I just enjoy getting drunk and doing stupid things with my mates on a weekly basis.

It's not really a tool to solve any problems as such, but it is a great way of getting a bit away from it all. And in the end, good people of the escapist, we know about that, right? :D

Edit: Post number 100. Yay!

Just to be specific I am reffering to the consumption of alcohol by you the creator of the original problem. Anyway before I hear a single massive unanimous 'NO!' from the witty audience that is the escapist community let me delve a little deeper into a potentially conterversial subject. When you have a problem most times you seek to solve it. While alcohol may not neccessarilly solve your problems. It generally makes them not bother you as much. They are easier to deal with. And in moderation a problem that is bothering you can be drowned out by alcohol for a long period of time. This may not neccessarily be a good thing. But Then again it might. You tell me.
I would like to tell you about a quote as to why alcohol is a sensible investment choice:

If you bought $1000 in shares in Delta airlines a year ago, you'd have $49 today. If you bought $1000 in shares in AIG one year ago, you'd have $33. If you bought $1000 in Lehman Brothers shares a year ago, you'd have $0. However, if you bought $1000 worth of beer, drank the beer, and turned the cans in for a recycling refund, you'd have $214.

I'm not sure if alcohol actually solves your problems, it just makes you forget about them in a musing fashion.

Fer' instance, I have two assignments and a movie trailer to do over the next week. I could get drunk, but I don't think I'd get anything done.
