Is anyone else a little nervous about Skyrim?

Well, pretty much all the regions and nations are different in their own way anyway. I don't see how being in a Nordic fantasy world would feel like anything other than TES, even with the Empire having fallen. There will doubtlessly be many remnants of the old societies and old factions. In fact, I would be surprised if you didn't run into the last remnants of the Imperial Legion stubbornly holding on to the remains of a dead society.

This team is good at world building and continuity. I think it will feel as Elder Scrollsy as ever,

I don't get why people cringe and cry saying "OMG! NOT GONNA BE AS GOOD AS MORROWIND!". Morrowind sucks and you know it. It was a cluster-fuck of awfulness from the controls, the pointlessly large amount of armour slots (Left AND right gloves? WHAT THE HELL?!) all the way to the setting being just plain awful and a lack of any real intro.

Oblivion fixed Morrowind. Skyrim looks like another improvement.
Easy there, kiddo. There's a difference between voicing your disapproval and flat out bashing the game. You don't like it, totally ok, you're entitled to your opinion, and I respect it. However, your judgement doesn't read very objectively. Just sayin'.

OT:

I'm not worried. Morrowind was fantastic, Oblivion was as well, so I have no concernes. All the features I've heard about sounds great, and my expectations are at an all time high.

I've mixed feelings about this game.
On one hand Oblivion stung me once (Fallout 3 was even worse), on the other, this is a new game engine and I'm genuinely curious to see how things have improved on the technical side.

Plus it has dragons. So maybe it will turn out to be entertaining after all.
I'm not expecting anything awesome or memorable anymore, because the last two times I asked that of a Bethesda title, it just ended up biting me on the ass.

I'm quite anxious about it. I'm more interested in the new engine though. As much as I love Oblivion and the recent Fallout's, a new engine is needed. I hope they work on better animations this time.

Is anyone else even trying to create these open worlds?

I loved TES IV and Fallout 3, I'll be shocked if TES V isn't excellent.

HA! Generic! Now that's a gem. The Dunmer, wildlife, architecture, dwarves, and many other things are unique to Morrowind
Look at it from a more objective standpoint. You've got pretty generic orcs.

Humans: Three races based on real-world stereotypes. Next.

Elves: You've got the generic high elf race (even called that in game). You've got your stereotype dark elf race and the wood elves. This could've been lifted wholesale from the D&D monster manual. Guess what? They're even identical to these horrid cliches.

And... You've got a pretty standard reptilian race, and a cat-like race. Nothing inspired to be seen here.

The closest to being interesting in the lore are the Daedra. Ah, fun times with Daedra...

Anyways. Dunmer. Original? Please excuse me while I laugh histerically for a few minutes.

I'm sorry, I fail to see how the Morrowind dark elves are stereotypical. Or, indeed, anything else in the Vvardenfell setting that you haven't addressed.

I'm not nervous because everything I've seen indicates it's going to be similar to Oblivion, which I didn't care for. Hence there is nothing to get nervous about if I'm not interested in the first place.

That's my opinion, anyway. I'm not like some Morrowind fanboys who will try to shoot you down if you prefer Oblivion. If that's what you like, then that's fine by me. If I prefer Morrowind, then that should be fine with you as well.

Here's how the Dunmer are pretty much just the Drow repackaged.

1. They are "changed" standard elves (like the drow).
2. They changed due to worshipping (a) daedra (Demon[Llolth}) instead of (an) Aedra (celestrial[Corellon Larethian])
3. There was a huge battle/war of some variety which actually sparked the change.

They're just the drow repackaged for folks, like yourself, who aren't very genre savvy. Like almost every "dark elf" race in existence. This isn't bad, but it sure as spit isn't creative.

To be honest I didn't see most of morrowind because the game left me with no reason to care.

I am a little. All I want is for it to feel like TES. Morrowind has done that the best.

I am sure it will be quality either way.

So that's why Morrowind is my favourite game of all time?

Strange.

From those three points then yes, but they only refer to their origins. If you didn't see much of the game, then you missed out on a lot of what made it unique therefore rendering this discussion moot.

Also, no reason to call me genre unsavvy. I've seen my share of fantasy settings to know when something's repackaged.

I'd have played more of the story if the beginning wasn't so god-awful. I hate to do it but I have to go back to storywriting 101 with this mess.

A story tends to have something called an introduction. Something interesting or exciting that starts a story moving.

It might be a exciting battle sequence (Star Wars), an escape sequence gone wrong (Oblivion) or just a puzzle or mystery (Citizen Kane).

In Morrowind I was asked a few questions by a series of uninteresting NPCs who have nothing to do with anything. I was given a package (or something) to deliver to a guy (I guess) for a reason ('cause someone's got to do it...). Nothing about it had any sense of urgency or meaning. I was just some guy who got off a (surprisingly empty) prison ship for (A reason). This is a textbook case of not excuse-plot but rather really-poorly-done-plot.

Because I had no reason to care, the awful controls got on my nerves rather fast. I had no idea how the combat was really meant to work because I've never actually fought anything. And the needlessly large amount of armour slots pissed me off as well. I dropped out of the game faster than any other game of its genre.

Oh, and don't get me started on the dreadful dialogue system. That causes me to shit bricks in rage when I think about it.

I'm very nervous about Skyrim, and I'm one of those Morrowind guys. I see the step that was taken between Morrowind to Oblivion, and now I see the same step between Oblivion and Skyrim. Time will tell, but I remember around this time in the release schedule that Oblivion was removing some content like throwing weapons and I just shrugged it off. I'm not ignoring red flags like that this time when I hear there are already less skills for your character now.
Initially this was my thinking but in retrospect I think that Oblivion's greater problems were horrible UI (only partially remedied with mods), too many locations similar too each other and just not enough to do.

Not enough to do ties in with too many similar locations - FO3 didn't have a huge amount of quests but it was a fun world to explore, as Morrowind was.

At the very least, I hope they improve the UI (no Fisher Price style UI out the box please) and make the locations much more varied.

I think Dragon Age as really raised the bar in this genre and whilst I don't expect Bethes

Oblivion was kind of a let down, I'm hopeful for Skyrim though. I hope they bring back levitation.
