Is anyone else on the escapist a school teacher? I'm a PGCE student in Mathematics and finally taught my first lesson today (woopwoop!) Is anyone else on here a teacher? Any random insights, stories or advice? =)

I'm a private one, but I teach in school, too.
So what kind of random insights do you want to hear?

PGCE? That's elementary level right? How old are your kids?

My father is but I am not. He teaches music and band primarily but has the skills necessary to teach English and Math for grades 7-9 or so.

Schooling noobs everyday, does that count?

I used to teach Safeboot (all aspects) and I found it pretty terrifying but exciting at the same time. Generally I'd teach over 3 day courses so I got flung around the UK a fair bit.

I have tutored some kids in High School and Middle School, and if my advice is worth anything, I'd say don't show them any fear.

I think that's not bad advice. I've already sent one kid out of the room which seemed to work wonders on the rest of them, maybe I should do some act of fearlessness in front of them XD

PGCE can be primary or secondary, I'm doing secondary at the moment but I'd like to go into A level stuff. What about you? Annnnd anything you feel you want to share really! One kid today asked what I did in REAL life.. Then decided I looked like a fireman =S

Math is fun, English is fun but hard work, very hard work.

Ok, fear is alright. But be yourself. Don't fool yourself into thinking you can mask your emotion in front of them.
They know, they will find out and will exploit it. Be absolutely honest all of the time without any exception and they will love you no matter what kind of sadistical pr*ck you are. (It works wonders for me!)

True Story: Before the first day of class, my college professor gave us an assignment to be presented on the first day of class. The assignment was to give a brief summary of our theological beliefs, our styles of learning, and our expectations from our professors. He began the class by collecting all the assignments, made them into a neat pile, stood on the desk and tore ripped the pile to pieces. It got the point across to us very nicely.

I've always wanted to do that; sends a powerful message.

Just started my Master of Education studies, so it'll be a while before I actually start the job, but I've done several internships at schools during my BA studies. Gotta agree with what the others say - show no fear. Or even much uncertainty. The little buggers pick up on it, and rather quickly. What worked well for me was this: Show 'em who's boss, but in a fun way. Dazzle them with a quirky story/anecdote, and/or establish common interests (they'll be eating out of your hand), but also make it clear you're not their buddy, or their equal.

My girlfriend is an NQT teaching years 4 and 5. She fucking loves it despite finding out recently that her school is failing miserably. It's weird because 5 years ago (after the last Ofsted inspection) it was a "good school with outstanding elements" but now it's in special measures with the exact same headteacher (although she has now retired after the embarrassing report).

My girlfriend was one of the few teachers in the school to receive a very good report, the kids love her and she loves teaching them. I guess my advice from what she's told me would have to be this: Maintain the respect of the children whilst balancing their favour. In order for them to get the best out of your teaching, they need to like you alongside knowing that you won't take any shit from them. From what I hear, my girlfriend is pretty good at that, and it helps to keep her enjoying what she's doing.

Also, keep on top of your planning. It might seem like a lot of work at first, but if you get into a routine when organising your planning and shit...well, you'll appreciate it. There's nothing worse than letting it all build up and panicking to finish it all in one weekend, with no time to relax.

If you have any other questions...feel free to ask. = ]

Yeah, I'm an English teacher trainee, only one year to go! :D
After that I will be qualified to teach kids in high school (In Dutch: Voorgezet Onderwijs)
The best advice is, indeed, to just be yourself; you are going to spend a lot of time with your students, so if you lie or hold something back, they are bound to find out anyway.

Another piece of advice: Love your work, a positive attitude is contagious!

I'm not but my best friend is. He has a few interesting stories. One time he was at a party and noticed a girl in the corner. He asked his friend what her name was. Turns out she was one of the tenth graders he had taught a few weeks ago. Mildly amusing.

I taught English composition at the college level while I was working toward my MA and PhD. I don't teach at the moment, but I was a teacher for almost ten years.

Any particular advice you'd like to receive?
