Is anyone else sick of the Willhelm scream?

I think it's being used out of spite at this point or at the least partially.
As you point out it is an in joke but since so many people now recognize it it's been bled from the original context and culture into the mainstream and as we all know the mainstream ruins everything.
It's a joke that was never meant for you (I assume without knowing you personally) or any of us outside the circle.
Be honest, this isn't something you noticed one day while watching a movie, it's something that was pointed out to you and now you can't help but see it everywhere.

Tl;Dr
They use it just to annoy you and everyone else, filmmakers be trolling.

Actually, I first noticed it in all of the Star Wars and Indiana Jones films, without ever knowing that they were common in other films. I didn't know it had a name, but the moment I heard it in a Youtube video, my immediate thought was "Star Wars."

I think your point still stands, though.

I see your point, and it does take me out of the movie whenever I hear it. But at the same time, it is fun to listen for it in the theatre.

No way, it makes me smile when i hear it. I watched a movie yesterday that had it in.....and only good part of the movie called Ghost Rider 2. :)

I find it to be distracting and immersion breaking, but I can tolerate it in games, although I've only seen it in Red Dead Redemption and Mass Effect 2.
It makes me ask myself if whoever decided to use it just wanted to include it for a laugh or if they genuinely thought it blended in seamlessly, and whenever a piece of fiction makes you ask a question that isn't directly tied to the theme or story, that's when they've probably done something wrong.

... At least imo.

You know what I find more annoying and over saturated than a scream that lasts about a second and that isn't really a big deal?

EDIT: I think your overratcting..usually it only ever lasts for less than a second
I can't help but hear that being said by Russell in Up ("But it's a talking dog!")

I like it, I think it's funny whenever I hear it in something, like an almost metagame for entertainment

It always ruins immersion for me. I'm not sure if that's just because it's used at inappropriate times, because I'm aware of it, because I'm a film student or all three. But I do know I'm sick of it.

I mostly prefer Youraagh. You find Wilhelm annoying? There's really a possibility for everything.
shit i just spent 30 minuets trying to find that. should have read the thread first

the howie scream

that shit pops up in so many movies and games its not even funny. what's worse is it's used in basically any motivational training, ass busting scene you can think of (thats the nutrigrain scream for any aussies)
why i hate that scream more than the wilhelm is it's not even realistic in any sense other than torture
Isn't that also the sound TIE-Fighters make?

Nah, I always laugh when I hear it, every time. I think it was supposed to be a homage to the first film it starred in originally, then it just got kinda used and used and it's become an in-joke for directors in the films and games and programs.

Doesn't bother me though.

There is a lot of screams I recognise but I never find them in something really that significant, just side falls and deaths.

However, it could be because I just find this a minor annoyance compared to all the garbage they throw in movies now. You know what I'm sick of? The terrible writing and stupid over used baby jokes I find in so many movies currently (made The Avengers painful), the dark filters I think they use in every thing (Social Network is darker than Aliens), the same genre's over and over, bloody fucking remakes and prequals gelore, 3D remakes that aren't even 3D, etc. I hardly go the cinemas any more so these screams really aren't in my focus right now. Sorry.

I think Jackson's decision to incorporate an over-used George Lucas in-joke moves him dangerously close to the man and his tendency to massacre the things he made for which we love him. When I heard it in The Hobbit I thought - "Of course! This is to LOTR what Phantom Menace was to Star Wars!". And I cringed.

I don't think you can be really irritated by it unless you were actively looking for movies or clips which have it. It doesn't bother me one bit, rather it's a fun little gag I smirk at for a second and then return to watching the movie.

But yeah, anything that gets overused becomes torturously annoying after a while.

Yeah man, it completely took me out of the Hobbit. I don't know why but it's almost always completely out of place in modern film.

I rarely, if ever, notice it.

Seriously, there are usually more important things going on on-screen.

Nope.

Sure, I can probably list off tons of movies that have used it, but it's always amusing to me.

What's slightly more annoying to me is the prevalence of people on the internet who will get outraged over insignificant things.

Not really, heck I was watching a longer compilation of that scream with my bro a few days ago!
To me it had become a funny gag to be used in shows or films sort of like a spotting game but in saying so I did find it werid (but funny) that MLP:FiM had used that scream twise so far.
