Is anyone else sick of the Willhelm scream?

Really? I love the Wilhelm Scream. To each their own, I suppose.

I don't think it's popular because people find it "hilarious".

Also, if this is your biggest complaint in movies right now you must be enjoying them a lot more than I have been recently.

It annoys me mildly. It's a funny sound, and so well known, that when inserted by foolish film-makers into serious pieces, it draws me completely out of the film. Otherwise, I don't mind terribly.

I think it just annoys you because you're aware of it. It's a pretty common thing to only know how to handle being aware of a thing by being annoyed by it, especially if it's a new found awareness.

Nope. I like to see how many different genres and entertainment mediums actually use it. I find it amusing when I play a game and watch a movie and randomly hear it I just go, "There you are you son of a gun." And all is well.

I used to think it was funny, up until a few years ago where it seemed less like being 'clever' and more like 'can't be bothered to look up a proper scream.' Now I'm sick to death of it and just hearing it rips me out of whatever experience it's in and makes me want to strangle the idiotic, unimaginative editor.

That said, I still quite like the Yoooaaargh scream- especially it's use in Last Action Hero.. and this clip:

There actually used to be a stock scream in the bond films which doesn't get used anymore- It was a real corker, and only popped up in MGM films.

Sorry about the fluff- this is the best clip I could find of it:

I had no idea that thing actually had a name.

Yes. Yes it annoys the everloving crap out of me. Ever since I identified it as a bit of stock sound, I've been hearing it everywhere and it yanks me out of any immersion as if it was a choke chain tied to me unmentionables.

DSBOSPIT.wav from doom affects me the same way, but gets used a bit less.

I understand that the creators use it as a joke or an homage and yes, it doesn't last long so I'm sure my reaction to it is out of proportion. But even knowing that, my gut instict upon hearing that sound while engrossed in a movie is still to throw my soda at the screen in disgust.

The key is that it's less than a second long.

You may say that length has nothing to do with it, but that's a damned lie.

I love it. It's done as sort of a homage to other movies, and it's also the sort of an inside joke you can share with nerds and movie makers while it shoots right over the heads of your average popcorn muncher.

It's especially loverly when a really low budget movie re-uses the Wilhelm scream multiple times in one scene for different people, or for important characters and not random extras. It doesn't get any schlockier. Grade-A Hollywood cheese.

I have nothing against it, in fact I usually have a chuckle every time I notice it. For example in the Hobbit when a goblin fell off a bridge they used it.

I used to - but every time I hear it now, it cracks me up. My husband and I point it out to each other, as if we didn't just hear it. n_n . I'm pretty sure it's just a running gag now more than a serious attempt of adding anything meaningful.

Yeah, I mean, the Wilhelm scream is a Hollywood cameo.

Though, I guess people who hate Wilhelm might also hate when celebrities make cameo appearances.

I'm actually kind of ashamed that I didn't catch it in Django, but there's no way QT didn't put it in there somewhere.

I hate that thing something awful.

Perhaps I have an ear for identical samples, with a background in music and programming synthesizers, but that's a definite eye-roller for me. Trying to be cool with a nudge-nudge wink-wink to some lame in-joke. That or it's some kind of Freemason secret signal (cf. Monty Python).

Including it makes me think less of the production, that's a definite.

How have I never known this was a thing until now? That video is hilarious.

And yes, now that I know, I'll probably hear it everywhere and be deeply annoyed every time. Thanks for that xD

With all the other stock sounds that get used continuously in media, this doesn't bother me. It's a stock scream, people use stock sound effects, deal with it. Or offer a service of free unique scream sound effects for the movie industry.

Also, fast headcrabs use the Wilhelm scream as there shriek. Nobody finds that annoying or boring.

It's the sound for the Starcraft 1's Academy, Terran Upgrade building.

The youraaaaghhh one, anyway.

And no, I don't find it annoying. I don't think filmmakers having fun on a 0.5 second running gag is a problem. Most of the movies it's used in have bigger problems than a little easter egg.
