Is anyone else tired of the FPS genre?

No. I'm tired of the SFPS games (Safe First Person Shooter). These are the FPS games that are afraid to venture beyond what makes money, i.e. Call of Duty. They never try to add anything to the game, they just copy and paste whatever is garunteed to make a profit. I guess, with how much games cost to produce these days, that's not 100% unreasonable, but I'd still like to see more titles like System Shock or Painkiller.
I miss the days when developers could make games about undead gunslingers with pitchforks that wage war on a cult devoted to the dark god that killed him. Nowadays, not many developers can afford to take that chance, on account of the chance that no one will play the game.

When I see an FPS, I usually ask, "what do I do in this game besides shoot stuff?"

The answer is usually "not much"

Fortunately, there are wonderful exceptions like Deus Ex.

Fortunately, there are plenty of other game types.

Fortunately, there are other people on the planet who are not bored of the standard modern shooter.

Life is wonderful that way!

no. not at all. in fact, people like yourself who think the FPS genre is unoriginal or over-abundant are just conditioned to think that way. sure, there is CoD and some of its clones, but take a look at these games...

aside from being first-person shooters, these games are incredibly different from one another. also, that is the majority of FPS games coming out in 2012 that i could find with a decent amount of gameplay (or any at all) to show you.

there is also Halo 4, Brothers in Arms: Furious 4, Borderlands, Dust 514, Dishonored, etc. that are all very original. there is something for just about everyone. there's twitch shooters, tactical shooters, run and gun, stealth, multiplayer-only, single player-only, cover-based, free roam, MMO, military, simulators, and even FPS/TPS hybrids like Ghost Recon: Future Soldier.

you need to look deeper than just the shared perspective.

Yeah I'm getting tired of it because the big studios have found the recipe for a "safe and successful" release and are in the process of beating it even further into the ground. I'm not tired of FPS games in general, I'm tired of the same tired formula that's been propagated for the last several years.

Not at all. I simply don't buy more than one FPS game every 1-2 years unless I'm in the mood to otherwise.

If I bought the newest NHL game every year I'm sure I'd be sick of them as well...as is I pick up one NHL game each console generation and am very happy with my purchase when I get it.

In short, I'd rather our market be flooded with games than the alternative. I dislike how few alternatives there are for games like Diablo 2, or Advanced Wars 2, Puzzle Quest, etc.

I am beyond sick of FPS games! If Call of Duty, Halo, Gears of War, Battlefield and all the other FPS games could just go away even just for a few months, that would make me a happy gamer!

Not to rain on your parade but you have videos showing a variety of shooters and about half of them are sequels or continuations of a series. In your opening statement you want to disagree that shooters are just clones and then go to show that all the "new" ones coming out are just remakes and sequels of ones that were released prior. Kind of killing your own argument. You even said that Halo 4 and Borderlands 2 are original... Halo has what, 7 games in the franchise now? Borderlands will have 2 plus a slew of DLC expansions... How can they be original?

If someone would just stop trying to be CoD or Halo and be their own fresh game, they wouldn't be so stale. In the mean time, just avoid FPSs and play something else.

(Hey, how do you think I could get an FPS to successfully earn an E for Everyone rating? Please don't just tell me it's a bad idea.)

You can't "this thread again" until you've been here for a year. Anyways, he doesn't want to seem antiestablishment, he is just asking who else got bored. A poll, to see the demographic.
I'm really glad that you are tired of the Genre Mr. 15 year old, one less annoyance when I play Games that are actually meant for adults online. One less squeaky chipmunk voice. One less kiddie calling any and everyone a hacker.

Thank you for turning your back on the Genre, that kind of thing makes it just a little bit more enjoyable for me.

___________

No, I am not really tired of it, there are alot of them, sure, but only about a handful of them every year tend to be worth looking closer at. This year for instance Bioshock Infinite.
I don't understand the relation between me pointing out that you haven't been here long enough to have seen THAT many repeat threads and me being under age. Also, you presume that 1) I have a chipmunk voive and annoy people online. That's not true. I know who you're talking about, and that's not me. They're usually 13 and under. But thanks for presuming that.
2) The reason I said what I said in the first place is because I find it hard to believe someone who hasn't been here for a year has the the "Tired of FPS" thread more than like twice. Besides, this isn't really the average "tired of FPS" thread. Now I don't know if what I said offended you, which really wasn't the point, but whatever. I don't want this to be another pointless internet argument.

I am just tired of the "militarized modern combat" fad (AKA CoD/BF clones), but no, I'm not tired of FPS as a genre at all, I still enjoy it a lot.

I'm sick of the fact that there are so many of them, because its like the lowest common denominator form of game. Like a lot of other people who have commented, its not so much the actualy genre, its just the CoD/BF style military shooter. I had great fun with Borderlands and Deus Ex. I'm having less so with Rage because its just a dull grindfest. I very pretty grindfest, but a grindfest all the same.

The other major problem I have with FPS's is that I dont find them immersive. It draws my attention to the fact I'm playing a game more when I'm looking through the screen, than when I'm playing a third person game where I can see the character. FP perspective makes me all the more aware that I'm not really in the location shooting at people than when I see a character in the situation. I have a lot more fun that way than when I'm just playing a floating gun (this means YOU, Half Life 2)

But I also understand why the genre is more popular with developers. A game in first person doesn't require a whole load of player character animations, also the camera only needs to work from a fixed point (internal view) as opposed to having complete 360 degree freedom in every direction (external view). But what can you do? As a genre, its not going to be usurped anytime soon by some other genre. RPGs aren't going to suddenly become far more popular than FPS's, are they?

I was tired of them ten minutes after I played one for the first time. Guess that means Im not the target market? I did like Timesplitters though.

I think you could argue that FPS isn't a genre, its a camera angle. But thats neither hear no their, since I get your point, which is "Are you tired of CoD clones?"

The answer to that is, to a certain extent, yes. But I still enjoy a game of CoD or Halo with my friends (local multiplayer all the way) every once in a while.

Just don't go lumping games that are trying new things (Deus Ex, Borderlands, BioShock (regardless of your opinions of those games you must admit they are at least pushing the boundaries slightly)) with the same ol' corridor shooters, because I am not getting tired of those at all.
Actually, no you couldn't. You could argue that it is a camera angle and a genre, but to deny that it is a genre at all is erroneous. But hey, that's neither here nor there.

Anyway, I pretty much agree with this guy.

There are a lot of FPS games but I have found the trick is to play ones YOU LIKE TO PLAY. You may tire of hearing about them but I don't see how it could make you tired of it if you don't play them on a regular basis.

I can understand why you may dislike them for being multiplayer centric if you don't enjoy it, but when you make a thread like this it tends to rub people the wrong way. Instead of an honest question it sounds more like you are talking down to those who enjoy those games because YOU can't understand how it could be enjoyable.

I play a lot of Shooters especially BF which are very multiplayer centric. I enjoy them because the unpredictability of multiplayer matches can lead to crazy/epic/hilarious things that can equal anything in the best single player games. That is not to say single player games are worse(I <3 Skyrim).

It is just a different path to getting the end result that we all are trying to achieve as gamers. We all just are trying to have fun.
