It has a great atmosphere that you rarley find, but gameplay and story itself is not revolutionary or anything. Rent or once or twice, but don't buy it or expect to set the world on fire.

The GOTY for 2007. 2007 was a good year for games. Does that tell you anything?
CoD4 came out in '07... wasn't THAT the game of the year? Or is the voting retarded and Duty 4 won for '08? Or are we talking about two different groups deciding on different titles?

I need answers!
It just depends on the organization you are talking about. I think declaring a GOTY is just stupid though.

My standards in games are unexpectedly high (especially since I only grace single-player modes/story modes), and Bioshock is a decent, good game. I loved the plasmids and how its elemental powers are actually used in environments rather than eye-candy killers.

BS2 is supposed to be set after BS1. Apparently, you are a big daddy, but you can use plasmids.
also, the main villain is the 'Big Sister,' a little sister from the first game.

I just hope Bioshock 2 won't suck since you play as a Big Daddy with plasmids, and can use plasmids and weapons at the same time. I don't care for its Multiplayer.

Well, personally, I don't think it is the best game I have ever played, nor is it the best first person shooter, but it certainly ranks in top five. I liked it because the story was well written and engaging despite its linear nature, the graphics were awesome, and the concept of aquiring new abilities requiring tinkering with one's own genetic code was certainly a new one on me. But, of course there were a few things I disliked about it. I guess my greatest complaint against it was that after about an hour of playing it, the game ceased to present much of a challenge. Every encounter followed the same basic pattern, but then, that can be said of quite a few shooter games.

I bought Bioshock on release day, it was a good game but pretty much bland and recycled, aside from the story and setting they were not too many saving factors.

If I recall correctly, BioShock somehow beat out COD 4.

The art was nice, but I didn't find it engaging. About 2 hours in I just couldn't bring myself to play it again. I made the mistake of thinking it was an RPG (damn you Steam!), which it really wasn't at all. I thought since I loved Half-Life 2 and Mass Effect, and it seemed vaguely in-between those two, that I'd like it. That really wasn't the case, unfortunately.

The Irish guy was really annoying too.

Do people have different opinions?
Chuckle, this.

I hated Bioshock personally.
Why was that?
Does it matter? The op is clearly a bioshock fanboy so sooner or later this will descend into a flame war.
Because I wouldn't mind having a discussion about the subject, if you would rather not that's fine.

Yeah it's OK. I never saw why it was so "revolutionary," but the whole steam punk aesthetic looked really great.
It was (mildly) revolutionary in that it made the gamer question thier habits and motives as a gamer.

It dealt with themes of free will versus following a set path that is dictated to the protagonist, i.e. the player.

The central plot twist put you in a situation where
you find out you have have been mentally programmed and blindly follwing the path dictated to you by others, which is exactly what we as gamers have been trained to do to get from checkpoint to checkpoint.

Nobody tells you to enter the lighthouse and make your way into Rapture but you do it anyway as it is seemingly the only choice available. Bioshock questions the nature of gaming and how we blunder onwards regardless without thought as to why

BioShock was a pretty good game. I enjoyed it on all three of my playthroughs, other than the part where you can't control which plasmid you use, but that passes quickly.

Not a bad game by any means. Not the BEST ever, but it's enjoyable.

...I honestly never thought about it that way.
I mean, I knew it questioned the human nature of taking orders from people whom we've never met, and respecting them...But I never thought of it as questioning our nature as gamers how we follow the objectives. Thank you for pointing that out.

I could be utterly wrong of course, that is just how I interpreted the events and story of the game!

The devs may not have intended that interpretation at all but it seems likely that they did.

Bioshock is awesome, one of my favorite games on the platform. But it's been done before. The is 2 twists away from being generic. I am looking forward to the next Bioshock for sure.

Every damn game site has their own game of the year. That's probably where the confusion came from. and if anyone considers those stupid spike awards to be the end all say all... well... thats unfortunate.
