Is chivalry dead?

In the modern times we live in many people believe that chivalry and equal rights can't go hand in hand. But chivalry is the small things you do, such as hold a door open for a women or pull the chair out for them or wait for them to sit before sitting yourself. And I'm here to ask the Escapist, can equal rights between genders and chivalric values be maintained together? Or is it one or the other in an absolute sense?
And why?
I believe that they can be current in today's society, women can still have the same or even more rights then men in many situations, but does that mean we have to stop treating them how most of them deserve to be treated? Is it too much to show some respect to the female gender?

The problem with Chivalry is that it is aimed only at women. I hold the door open for everyone and anyone who is nearby. Old men, young men, old women, young women.

I also am not a man myself.

There is a better name for Chivalry that fits well in equal society. Politeness and manners.

Yeah it's dead, thankfully.

I will hold the door open for anyone behind me, doesn't matter if they are male or female, its just common courtesy. I offered my seat on the bus to a girl last week because she was fumbling with her bags and her iPod and there was nowhere for her to sit. I would have done the same if a guy was similarly struggling with his stuff. There's nothing at all wrong with being a gentleman, but putting women on a pedastal is ridiculous. I believe in equal rights in *all* ways.

The whole point of the argument it that there is no difference, and thus you should show both genders equal respect insofar as gender is concerned. I don't see what rights necessarily have to do with social practices in this scenario. You could certainly have complete equality and still have individuals who act "chivalrous". I don't think anyone is suggesting we criminalize "chivalry".

Things that will inevitably be brought up in this thread include: Medieval codes of chivalric love, bickering over definitions, lesbians and feminists.

The US never had an aristocracy or nobility, let alone any needs for moral regulations on the interaction between knights and women of the court. And what moral regulations we do have at least nominally apply to all social classes equally.

So yeah, it was never even alive where I'm from.

Most women I know wish to be treated as ladies.
And I open the door for anyone, which I don't know, does that make it chivalry?

Chivalry is dead. Universal politness killed it.

Call me an optomistic person but from what I've seen in my life, the real assholes of the world are just a visible miniority. People open doors for me, help me pick up stuff if I trip and lose stuff in a bag as well as make room for the elderly. I figure the world is only about 20% asshole in real life. Once the interent is applied however...

Not in me. I always am chivalrous, even though a lot of women don't appreciate it as much as they should.

I always attempt to be a gentleman first, but it's a losing game.

You guys should know that Chivalry does not mean being polite to women, or at least it did not. The term at one point was almost interchangeable with honor.

I'm the exact same way.. I open doors for everyone.. if I'm on the subway and an old person or someone else who looks like they could use my seat more than I can, I'm generally the only person who jumps up to give it to them.

..though I hate to say it, but I think it would be nice to experience chivalry as depicted in old films just once.. I'm 26 and still hasn't happened yet lol

..so yes.. alas in the traditional sense I think chivalry is indeed dead.

Yes, women killed it, see this for answers.

In history, women did fight pretty dirty. Women ninja's would were known for throwing sand in the eyes of their enemies.

it's definately dead. all boys care about is sex, which turns women into sluts with low self esteem. I feel like the only gentleman in a sea of animals. and as for feminists who don't want the door held for them, I say they should accept gender difference, rather than trying to claim that men and women are EXACTLY the same. they're not. get over it.
