Hello all,

So I just so happened to stumble upon Steam's midweek madness sale and COH2 just so happens to be $10. Now, my question is, is the game fixed? As in, is it actually fun to play now and is it worth $10? Meta critics user score still has the game at 1.9, but most of these reviews are from launch.

So fellow escapists, based on your experience with COH2, should I get it or nah?

If not then what other $10 game should I purchase on Steam?

Well, it's free to try until Sunday night. Why not download it and see for yourself?
Well, I did not even notice that. Thanks and will do.

In my opinion? Not really.

Damage is still totally unfaithful to reality; Panthers take at least 3 hits from the ISU-152 and need as many shots to kill a Sherman, rockets are woefully under-powered against infantry while a bullet weapon's use against armor is based wholly on the intent of the unit wielding it.

Most units for each faction are worthless. Are you playing Oberkomando West? Building armor is a great way to lose, enjoy nurturing your basic infantry squads to three star all-roles dominance. See those light tanks? NEVER EVER EVER use them because armored cars exist. And you should immediately write off any unit with the words "light infantry" in its name. And artillery ranges have been universally nerfed because countering realistic artillery is a balance issue that Relic just couldn't be bothered to resolve. I'm not even going to get into stuff like the infrared searchlight halftrack.

Last but certainly not least, unit upgrades, commanders, and by extension whole units are still either DLC or random drops, so a big chunk of the game is behind a wall of some kind.

Basically COH 2 is just the first game, only wherever possible good gameplay was replaced with the stuff Dawn of War 2 got wrong.

Don't forget Penal Legionnaire squads that can weather hails of MG fire to lob satchel charges that annihilate six squads and a bunker in one blast, T-34s that become temporarily invincible whenever using the ram ability, laser-guided ZiS-3s that can put an entire barrage of shells right between your eyes from out of the fog, largely irrelevant commander abilities, AI that can always see what you're doing and moves troops away from artillery barrages before the guns even fire....

I tend to like Relic games and even enjoyed this one in a love/hate relationship, but they cannot balance their products to save their lives.

Don't try to take the user score seriously, most of those are a bunch of angry Russians who didn't like the game portraying the Soviets in a negative light.

This really. I played CoH2 quite a lot during beta and after launch, but between the nonsensical balancing (one side with great armor and multi-role infantry, the other with only one reliable AT unit and lots of infantry specialized at killing other infantry), the extortion-like DLC (all the best commanders are DLC, all commanders cost $5 each) and a matchmaking system that seemed worse than the one in both CoH and DoW2 made me forsake CoH2 in favor of Wargame.

The DLC policy in particular is so anti-consumer that it is ridiculous. Some of the commanders are so blatantly overpowered that they are almost a must if you want to stand a decent chance of winning a multiplayer match and you are expected to fork out a fifth of the games original price just to get one commander for both sides. I did not pay $50 for a full game only to be expected to pay $5 every other month to remain competitive in the metagame.

Ehh, its not perfect, but then again, neither was COH1. I'd say things are pretty good now, but there are some things that are not so easy to fix. OKW have no real counter to maxims early game, and scout cars can destroy you if you don't get a at gun early, which means that your infantry force will be weaker. Some units are literally unusable like the su-76.

Please elaborate which DLC commanders you thought were 'blatantly overpowered.' I can only think of one, and that one has since been nerfed. And FYI, you can now get all commanders for free now if you play long enough; there's a loot drop system. It's not amazing, but if you play regularly you will get a commander every now and then.

Last time I was actively interested in the meta game it was generally considered that the meta game consisted of German Mechanized Assault (the one with the halftrack/assault gren call in) and Soviet Industry. I am glad to hear they've added some kind of way to get the commanders without shelling out three times the cost of the game, but even so I can't help but feel that CoH2 pretty much exemplifies pay 2 win for me.

Most of that rating is due to Russians not being portrayed properly but i dont know how good the game is but i can tell you this , that Company of heroes 1 is one of the best rts games i have played so if you have any doubts about buying the 2nd part , just buy the 1st instead.
