Hahaha. No.

In my opinion what is "responsible" for the existence of sexual and nonsexual interest in furries is human nature.

I arrive at this conclusion based on the facts that there have been furries aaaaall the way throughout history.

Greek legend features numerous athropomorphic creatures, like the Minotaur, Harpies and Centaurs.

There is a drawing from feudal japan, depicting a woman havig intercourse with an octopus.

The original version of Little Red Riding Hood contained beastiality and/or rape, depending on how you read the story (Sometimes the wolf is a man).

And the motherlode is ancient Egypt, where a pantheon of Furries represented the majority of deities.

Attraction to certain animalistic features seems to be a fundamental part of human sexuality. You can even find that connection in common language: "He is a stud.", "She is a *****.". Leaving aside the issue of gender evaluation in these examples, it seems remarkable that words from an animalistic context are also used for sexual contexts.

This is the case in english, german and french, which are all the languages that I am fluent in. I can not say anything about the rest.

So, no, Disney isn't responsible for furries. Just as MacDonalds isn't responsible for unhealthy food, the internet isn't responsible for trolls and slasher movies are not responsible for psychopaths. They just made it aware to the mainstream.

Well the Beauty and the Beast certainly touched the subject. For a moment there they even got close to bestiality. But there was a human in that beast, so I guess it doesn't count:p

Erm... anyway... I find the whole Ancient Egypt thing dubious. The Egyptian gods were portrayed as having animal heads, but I dunno, it just doesn't seem the same.
I would say the old Bugs Bunny in drag thing... but again, I don't see it.
"Furry" as I understand it, requires Anthropomorphism. An animal with human characteristics and intelligence. Bestiality is a different thing. Actually, I'm not sure if Nala counts, no matter how seductive her "come hither" stare.
Maid Marian from Disney's Robin Hood is the earliest example I can think of, of an anthropomorphized animal that was designed specifically to be seen as physically attractive.
So yeah, I think Disney was probably the first to go there, but plenty of other animators have followed suit.

I remember in Lady and the Tramp when Lady ran away from the killer dogs because she was in heat. Then later on, the reason she felt so dirty was because she had not acted very lady-like and allowed herself to breed with Tramp. Hence why they had puppies at Christmas.
Huh, so that's why she was being chased. Never realized that. Now I want to watch that movie again. :p

OT: Honestly, I always thought all Simba and Nala did was the animal equivalent of a hug in that scene. Now that I'm older...

...yeah...

Not sure if Disney is directly responsible for the furry-dom though.

I'm not a furry.

However sometimes anthropomorphized animals can be good looking.

Disney defiantly influenced the art but didn't kick off the furry fandom.

Then there is Robin Hood and, more specifically, Maid Marian.

I'm not ashamed to admit that as a young child I had a crush on this foxy (yes, I know you see what I did there) lady.
***** please.

OT: Since the dawn of our species we've sexualized and deified other animals. Hell, almost every god humanity has worshiped in our brief time here has been some form of animal, human hybrid.

I blame Shaq and Looney toons for bringing Lola Bunny to life and to big screens across the nation at least. No childrens movie needed an anthromorphic bunny with C cups bouncing about and such.. and yet she's here.. and a new generation of Furries were born. (The earlier generation I blame on the Thundercats opening episode >.>)
I think you mean Michael Jordan. Also, Cheetara and Lola Bunny, yeah.

I'm not sure exactly how popular they really were, but I'd say the Breath of Fire games certainly helped it along, too.

She just suffers from the same terrible fate inflicted on Barbie and Ken dolls.
Ack! Yep your right. Michael Jordan it was. -nod- Good catch.

Shaq was in something back from my child hood that just seemed random.. my brain just connected two old memories. (Did he voice act some old cartoon or something as a guest actor? I gotta look that up later.)
If you ever saw Kazaam then I pity you. There was also Shaq Fu, the game, and he apparently voiced himself in Johnny Bravo and Static Shock.

Captcha says: "ball of confusion". I think that's pretty apt.
Oh by odins bushy beard.. Kazaam.. that's what I was thinking of... Saw that as a wee child. (And I do believe I saw the two episodes of said shows as well. Loved me static shock and JB... never played Shaq fu though...

The furry fandom was kicked off long before that (I think its base roots in current-day culture is with werewolves, though there are animal-people all over history. Look at Egypt and Japan.), and it's not all about gay sex and fucking animals. That's just a loud group of random individuals with a strange fetish and a lust for stereotypes.

All in truth, though, if you want to bring up cartoons, the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is what originally got me into drawing people as animals when I was a child. All those action figures! So much collecting! Before that was Thundercats, Hoooo.....

It's like saying that Aisha from OutlawStar was what kicked off the catgirl fandom...

Disney is responsible for furries... Yeah, not buying that. I think some disney... "Furries" look cute, but not really anything i'd want to jerk off too.

OT: To say it like this, Zoophilia is a kind of furry simply because you want to have sex with an animal, and that sexual orientation has been around... Well, since always really. Disney may have CONTRIBUTED, but so has books, movies, theatre stuff and other media. Heck, simply talking about animals contributes somewhat .__.

Then again, the only thing Disney is contributing too now-a-days is giving me a migraine thanks to ALL THE F-ING SITCOMS! *Pulls out hair*... Oww, that hurt ;_;

Edited the title of the thread because I think a great many of you are misunderstanding my question. Entirely my fault, I phrased it poorly. Again I claim extreme tiredness.

Oh dear... I thought I was clicking on an EternalNothingness thread.

OT: ...Nope. I think they were there long before that, and the sudden internet explosion is what brought them out.

there is a rather large furry community on this forum btw
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Furrehs
so you might want to edit your post because your likely going to get reported/warned at some point

OT: No, there were always weird fedishes and in the case of furries it's probbly just there more publsized on the internet rather then outer groups out there.

As you can't catch teh gay

Not really, it's kind of like saying Stephen Hawking created atheists.
That may be one of the most clever statements ever. of all time.

OT: No, I doubt it. The concept of Man-Beasts has existed for, humanities existence probably.

Do they contribute to it? Certainly.
This, they obviously didn't START Furrydom, but I think that the modern day boom in furries, combined with when people growing up almost solely on Disney would be in their teens, along with Disney featuring many animals with human characteristics or looking almost human, is a little much for coincidence. Disney probably isn't what most furries would point to as the origin of their fantasies, but on a sub-conscious level I bet it does at least play a role.

I don't really think a few movies and shows are really gonna affect anyone's sexuality at all. Especially if it's completely animated.

...Wait, what? I can't say I ever thought so, but whether or not my... interests make me a furry or not is kinda subjective...
