So this week Sony announced that it would not participate in next year's E3.

https://kotaku.com/sony-pulls-out-of-e3-2019-1830474052

With all the other issues E3 has been having lately and with other publishers already not going to E3 or only delivering minor appearances there, does this spell the end of E3? If so, what does that mean for the industry?

So at this point, is any major game that will catch the public eye not coming from a massive publisher? There's probably around seven to ten companies that make most major releases coming out in a year. Why go to an event where they have to share the spotlight when they can just host their own event. E3 has some brand recognition going on, but a lot of these publishers have flagship titles that won't just be missed because they didn't attend.

I could see it becoming more focused on indie and lesser known publishers. Like for example, I could see THQ Nordic becoming a stable very soon. Guess we'll see.

I hope so. E3 hasn't been relevant since 1878, when the first snake-oil salesman tried to convince an entire town this here new Phonograph absolutely needs DLC for every note, because they're just too expensive to make without them.

Everything out of E3 is either a lie, or PR contalk for why the customers are sheep, games aren't games but services you rent, and really just give us all your money peasant and maybe we'll release a day-1 patch that lets you play the game. But maybe we won't, and your game simply won't work(looking at you Mass Effect 3 and EA...)

As for what this means to the industry, nothing. Nothing at all will change because nothing at E3 is real or worth knowing. AAA companies will simply have one less overly hyped event where paid journalist breathlessly rub one out while writing fluff pieces about how the dog in Call of Duty 'Broke the internet and we can't even!'

Good riddance I say.

Saelune has pretty good opinions on most everything, she just gets a little too indignant over politics and the idea anyone can be conservative on any issue and also not support Trump.

But yeah E3 is a shitshow and we're better without it.

Well, first let's see if a) Sony is skipping 2019 because they want to host their own Playstation 5 reveal conference, and b) if they're going to skip E3 2020. I think it's a bit too early to call this the beginning of the end. E3 isn't what it used to be thanks to people having internet, but it still generates an enormous amount of buzz and hype.

Sony also doesn't have a PSX this year, so I think it has more to do with them not having much more to show for the PS4, and not yet having enough to show for their next console, rather than them thinking E3 isn't worth it anymore.

I don't thing it will fade out any time soon. It's a very powerful hype machine and the publishers as a whole don't have anything to replace it.

I was going to comment on the PSX thing. It seems they don't have much to show at all, so skipping this E3 might not mean anything. It's already led to speculation that the PS4 is winding down, which is the more reasonable takeaway in my opinion.

That said, I have trouble caring either way because E3 has been hype over substance practically forever, and with more recent levels of hype (no gameplay, limited games, the whole "bullshots" thing), it can die off for all I care.

You mean like the internet? 🤷‍♂️.

Drop a trailer on Twitter and youtube and everyone will know within minutes.

Like think about nintendo direct. Pre-recorded content is easier to control and pretty much ensures there are no " live " blunders.

I should hope that the suspension will give Saelune a chance to rethink how they've been acting lately. I don't remember them being like this before the "long wild dark" as it was.

There's a lot trailers for movies, games, and TV shows fighting for attention online everyday. Having an event, like E3, or Comicon, creates large buzz that captures people's attention a lot more than simply dropping a trailer. Also, the practice of revealing a whole slew of new trailers within a couple of days has a way of intoxicating the senses, if only the prospect of it. This can make even mediocre trailers/reveals seem more appealing to the audience.

Whether this necessitates a live conference I don't know. That seems to be more about putting on a good face for the investors and the general public.

Well the reason i mentionned Nintendo Direct specifically is because ,they pretty much Drop a nintendo Direct when ever they want, for about half an hour when they have things to talk about/announce and it pretty much generates it's own hype on it's own time.

Everytime a Nintendo direct drops game media pounces on it,people hear about the games and gets hyped. I know that when one drops there's almost always a thread that pops up here on the escapist ( despite most people not caring about Nintendo).

And the pre-recorded format definitely helps delivery because you can avoid all the cringe and quiet downtime like during last E3.

Can someone please explain to me how the heck THQ Nordic is even staying afloat? It seems that every other day I hear about them buying an IP - at many times the rate that they're actually releasing games.

I assume buying the IP allows them to get profits from online storefronts, but apart from that...

Fun enough, they just broke record performance in net sales. Source: https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2018-11-14-thq-nordics-net-sales-up-1-403-percent-to-usd139-5m

Going by the article it seems like the remasters are doing well. Plus, it's not like they went after super popular IPs. They targeted old, niche, or ones that would probably never see the light of day again. For some reason, I feel like they'll announce a Too Human IP acquisition soon.

She got that way when Trump won the presidency. That was the day that most people on the internet lost their minds.

No. Sony bowing out changes nothing.

I hate Trump with a passion, but acting like a complete douche nozzle changes nothing, and let's people like him win. For her sake, I hope she learns from this. If she wants to, I would gladly help her anyway I can to ease her mind. Even if it's just a brief conversation.

She has severe depression and murica doesn't have a good health care system to alleviate that.
