Is 'fag' really the worst insult on the Internet?

OT: Nope. Also why is "******" such a bad word to use? I here people use it all the time, yet when I use it I get bashed and banned. It makes no sense. Why do certain groups get to use certain words and others don't?

****** is a bad word when there is actual hate behind it. Apart from that, I don't think theres anything wrong with it. As long as the people you say it around know you're joking.

I was playing Red Dead Redemption when this redneck decided to call me a "****** fag", at least he got one right. Now, being gay myself, I'm not too happy to hear those things, then again, it always depends on the context of the use, I say "fag" whenever I want, just like black dudes can call each other "niggers". Words are not offensive by themseleves, it depends on context, I happen to find this hilarious:

To me, it seems like people just can't come up with a decent insult to save their lives. It's always "Oh you don't like (insert game) because you're a fag. Go suck my dick fagggggg." Obviously their grammar is worse but still!

Also, it always seems like it's the most uneducated people that call you a fag. By that I mean, they have terrible spelling and grammar and hardly seem to know the English language. (Yes, that might be a little hypocritical, as I'm sure there are numerous grammar mistakes in this. However my grammar is usually decent enough to piss them off.)

So Escapist users, tell me is being called a ****** or a gay equivalent, really the worst insult ever?

EDIT: By worst I meant, do they think it's the most effective and hurtful? To me, it's lost most of it's meaning mostly because it's overused.

Obviously not, you've gotten it all wrong. It's use now is more ironic, like on 4chan you add fag to the end of everything, ie newfag, oldfag, gayfag, escapistfag... it means nothing, and everyone knows that.

It's probably offensive to homosexuals/homophobes, but personally I just shrug it off.

I'd find something like "cretinous twat" a lot more offensive, and even then it's kinda amusing.

I must admit, when people tend to call me homophobic epithets, I usually respond with 'wow, sounds like someone is looking for a boyfriend'.

I find the word (and others like it)unpleasant because of the homophobic implications of the word itself, and the way it and 'gay' is used as an insult or to indicate something is 'wrong' or 'bad'. I don't use it, and I wish prefer that others would stop using it.

But, hey, use it around me, and prepare to have your homophobia turned back on yourself.

4chan ≠ the internet. And 4chan doesn't have to be used as a source for everything. It's like saying porn is a great source for sex, because porn is a big part of sex that takes place.

Personally, I follow the South Park redefining of the term "fag" to mean "annoyingly loud bikers".

As that episode notes, "fag" is actually just a term that means "someone I don't like" rather than anything more specific. The elderly and the poor were both "fags" in previous centuries. Now that we're out of the 20th century and into the 21st, it's time for "fag" to be redefined anyway. Might as well mean annoying bikers.

Or people who talk during movies.
