Is FF13 a good jumping on point for the series?

I really want to play a good JRPG. I really don't want to hunt down rare/ older titles, so I was wondering if FF13 is a good title to get? I'm getting New Vegas this month, but I was wondering if it'd be a good title to grab when I get the chance.

Hell yes!
Its really cheap nowadays, i think you can get a copy for £15 and its great.
Admittedly its got a certain taste...but such little money for so much potential gameplay? i say go for it!

[you can download a lot of the older titles of the Playstation Store if you have a PSP/PS3]

That's still $30 USD, but that's not bad. PS3 or 360 version?

I wouldn't start with FF13. It's the only Final Fantasy game I've played that couldn't hold my attention until the end.

I'd recommend 10, 9 or 6 (ranked in order of how easy they should be to get hold of). 12 should be easier to find than 9 or 6, but isn't as good.

PS3 has a little crisper graphics, but other than that they're basically the same experience.

I wouldn't recommend FF13 as a starting point for Final Fantasy, since I've heard it was short and overly linear. Also, the HD graphics may give you high expectations, making it harder to enjoy the older ones. I'd recommend trying to find some of the GBA remakes of the old Final Fantasies at GameStop, or take a look at the Final Fantasies on the PlayStation Network. Or, you could try one of the various spin-offs, and work your way up from there. I personally started with Final Fantasy Tactic Advance. Hooked ever since.

However, that's just my opinion. If you think you'd enjoy FF13, then give it a shot.

Do you have a PS2? If yes, then you should try and find a copy of Persona 3 instead.

In all seriousness though, I'd say that FFXIII makes for a fairly decent jumping in point. As has already been said, you should be able to find it cheap, and the amount of game play you might get out of it makes it worth the price. A small warning though, it's a fairly divisive JRPG, even amongst the JRPG community, so there's every chance you'll hate it. But it's worth a shot and I hope you enjoy it if you do end up getting it. I love the game myself.

dont get a snes rom
and ff6 (or 3 if you are american), chrono trigger, and/or earthbound

I realise that two of these are not ff games but they are still good for jrpgs

Considering just grinding/exploring on Gran Pulse to even begin to attempt to survive the rest takes at least 30+ hours to get anywhere decent.. I'm going to have to call bull on that one.

Though you are correct on the linear aspect. But that isn't even that bad, considering most JRPG's are exactly the same thing.

no, it's really lack luster compared to the rest (well except X-2, but we don't mention that), try FF X, that's quite enjoyable, although my favorite would have to be FF9 for last generation, which you can get off Playsation Network, or FF6 if you're willing to go back in time, you can get it for the ps1/2 or pick up a rom off the internet somewhere.

I'd much sooner recommend FFIX or FFX, I haven't yet played XIII but I've heard some very......troubling things about it, namely the lack of towns, it's apparently all one big field.

Hah, true. I should have said the main game was short. My friend told me the first 2 thirds were just prologue.

I'd say final fantasy 10 is THE place to start
your adjustment to modern graphics would't be compromised for gameplay like if you'd have gone further back to 6 or 7

and it's probably got the most easy to get into
and probably has the most enjoyable characters as a whole
but everything is relative

Ps3 version for 4 times higher resolution on cinematics and slightly higher resolution during gameplay, smaller loads with no install :)!

In a word, no. FF13 was easily the worst in the series, possibly in the entire genre of JRPGs. FF10 would be a better jumping point.

Although I do not quite agree with the definition of "short" being used here.. yes, it is shorter than most. I will concede to that.

Hmm, I suppose it's not as bad as, say, the average FPS or sidescroller, I'll give you that.

This. So much this. PSPs can run Persona 3 now. Persona 4 is also awesome.

OT: I'd advise against it. FF13 might be the worst FF game (FF14 doesn't count), so starting with that on may not be the best idea.

final fantasy 13 is a terrible final fantasy game, but a fantastic jrpg. it doesnt really feel like a final fantasy game but if your primary concern is just a good solid jrpg, then ff13 is definitely an excellent choice

i dont play that many jrpgs but two games i advise you stay away from are final fantasy 12 and star ocean: til the end of time
