Is FF13 a good jumping on point for the series?

You speak blasphemy then call Lost Odyssey a great game?
I'm sorry for your loss.

As far as Final Fantasy goes I say 9, you can buy is on PSN relatively cheap I think.
The first Xenosaga was great but they went downhill quickly from there.

And Lost Odyssey was a great JRPG for THIS gen. console.

id say grab it. Its not really like the old games. Instead of turn base theres cool down times and stuff. and you can get the old games from the app store and on ds and psp

Hell yes!
Its really cheap nowadays, i think you can get a copy for £15 and its great.
Admittedly its got a certain taste...but such little money for so much potential gameplay? i say go for it!

[you can download a lot of the older titles of the Playstation Store if you have a PSP/PS3]
That's still $30 USD, but that's not bad. PS3 or 360 version?
Still cheap for a game that offers so many hours gameplay, if you ask me.

Ive played both, and id go for the PS3 version...simply because its on one disc:p haha.
But it should be that cheap for both systems(Y)

I wouldn't recommend FF13 as a starting point for Final Fantasy, since I've heard it was short and overly linear. Also, the HD graphics may give you high expectations, making it harder to enjoy the older ones. I'd recommend trying to find some of the GBA remakes of the old Final Fantasies at GameStop, or take a look at the Final Fantasies on the PlayStation Network. Or, you could try one of the various spin-offs, and work your way up from there. I personally started with Final Fantasy Tactic Advance. Hooked ever since.

However, that's just my opinion. If you think you'd enjoy FF13, then give it a shot.
Short??!? Its like 60 hours long..
Too lazy to re-clarify on what I meant by short, so please see the earlier quote-chain. -_-

NO!NO!NO!NO!NO! really oh god no; I have always loved final fantasy but even I had to force myself to finish that piece of crap game. Don't get me wrong it looks great but damn that game was some boring ass shit. Seriously dude I would do 6,7,8,9 (yes I like 8; it was the first one I finished back in the day)

The only final fantasy game I have enjoyed from the main series is IV which you can get easily on your DS. (If you want the bonus dungeon you gotta hunt down the GBA version though)

ff13 is not typical of jrpgs. It's good as a story-driven turn-based combat game, but I say if you want to jump into jrpgs then get Xenosaga.

Hmmm, lots of people have been saying starting with FF13 might put you off the series and JRPG's altogether. But if you've never played one before, or at least have limited experience with them, it wouldn't be a bad start. At least you could play it with the knoweldge that there are better JRPG's out there.

However, as a FF fan, I still quite enjoy 13. I still haven't completed it but I know once I start it again I'll be right back into it.

Edit: Also don't start with VII. Then you'll be one of those guys. And you don't want to be one of those guys... Those who started with VII and enjoyed it are unable to see that it was only a decent game and sees every game since that as complete rubbish. I am being stereotypical now, but it's not pretty...
Not necessarily. My first Final Fantasy title was VII and, to be honest, I think that it and VIII are both overrated. My favorites are IV (though I've only played the DS version), VI, IX, and X.

Of course, you did point out that it's a little stereotyping and I'll definitely admit that some of the more outspoken VII fans can be horribly annoying.
Great to see an exception from the stereotype, which is why I mentioned that I was going by the stereotype I guess... Now you made my day and it's not even 10am. I also liked IV a lot.

Being that Final Fantasy XIII was the JRPG that got me into JRPGs I would say that it is a good starting point. Just don't do what my buddy did and play Star Ocean: The Last Hope as your 1st oh that game...
