Ok so I sort of enjoyed Lost odyssey, but gave up on it because it was such a grind, should I get FF XII

Urm... I honestly wouldn't recommend it, it's not really an RPG, it's almost totally linear and frankly it's boring. FF12 was better FF8 was better, i would recommend you invest in something a bit more exciting and original.

Well the battle system is quite good with the paradigm shifts but you'll probably never do anything but choose auto-attack and let the game pick the abilities for you. It's also incredibly linear right up until the very end and the is no customisation in character progression although you can upgrade the weapons and accessories and the story isn't to bad either

If you hated the grind in Lost Odyssey, you'll despise it in FFXIII

It's fucking horrible.

Once you get to later levels, all you do is grind. That's it. Even lower level enemies can become 10 minute battles.

As it has been said, the combat system is nice and you only have actual grind near the end, like all Final fantasy's do, all and all, it's a linear combat RPG where the RPG comes in when you need to pick what skills you will learn first, it would be atroucious in most FF's but the combat system is good enough for it to not 100% suck.

That's the gameplay side.

On the story side, because of it's linearity, it has a better base for a more coherent story, and personally I kinda liked the story, and that was what made me finish the game.
Don't play it if you dislike general JRPG storylines, but if you do apreciate them, at least try it out

Final Fantasy XIII is a fantastic game, and if grinding is your problem, it would probably be the best of the series for you. It is incredibly linear, but this simply allows for it to be well-paced and include minimal grinding. The story is full of truly amazing personal and inter-relational drama, to a fault where the grand narrative feels a little tacked on by the end. However, it's a fine compromise. I'd take great personal storytelling and flawed narrative over the opposite any day: that's where Final Fantasy XII went wrong, too much epic narrative and political intrigue, not enough character development and personal conflict.

The battle system in XIII is my favorite of the series, and though it's slow to start, once it gets going it's really deep and fast-paced. I definitely recommend the game: it's not perfect, but it's quite good. I'd say my fourth favorite of the series (and I love Final Fantasy, so fourth out of 13 is great).

In my opinion, it is among the worst games I have ever played. BUT THAT'S JUST MY OPINION.
Yeeeah, agreed. It's as bad as Sonic 2006. And that battle system? Complete bullshit thanks to a botched UI.

FF 13 is just as awsome looking as anything else squareEnix has pumped out recently but it fails as a game mainly because its based around taking away as much control from the player as possible. 90% of the battle system is automated and the exploration element of the world has been replaced with long linear corridors. The story may be intresting (i didin't care for what i saw of it) but it's more of an interactive movie than a game.

It's bad.

You want explanation? Fine. The combat system is uninspired, uninvolving, an quite frankly, boring. Which doesn't help when later enemies can take FOREVER to kill. Characters level in a linear fashion. The game pans out in a linear fashion. You still have all the ridiculous grind you don't want. I wouldn't really call it a RPG, more so a linear boredom fest. Sure, it gets bearable (not necessarily good) at the 30 hour mark, but thats like buying 2 games, one terrible, and the other is simply mediocre, and you NEED to play through the terrible one first. That's the experience you'll get.

The battle system is actually pretty cool once it gets going, but everything else - and I do mean EVERYTHING - is terrible.

I actually enjoyed it. The linearity was a little annoying, and the final boss was lame, but I still had fun with it. The story is deep and there's a lot going on in it, and the battle system is pretty fun once you've got full control over it. I'd agree that you should go ahead and give it a rent. A lot of this game is up to personal taste.

Also, the battle theme is awesome. Just try and get those violins out of your head.

Well, the grinding is a big problem, the pace of the story and gameplay is comparable to continental drift recorded by high speed cameras, and exploration is a joke(a bad, dead person joke at a funeral, at that)

The battle system basically piss water that was frozen, translated into binary and was directly implemented into the gameplay(I dunno how 'Sqaure did that), because it's mostly auto-abilities and watching. Doing things manually, however, is also a stupid idea, because it will be just like trying to get across the English channel via underwater unicycle.

The story is... 'good' though, if you're into this type of thing. If you want a action-filled storyline, however, then I highly recommend you to skip this one, or maybe even skip gaming entirely, because the best kind of adrenaline filled story I found in books like the Gaunt's Ghosts series by Dan Abnett, which by the way is one of the best series I have ever read, and I am happy to read a thousand more pages if it means continuing the series(which I probably will, since I already saved up enough cash).

Overall, it's good/ excellent, for a die hard Final Fantasy fan, and poor/average for everybody else.

this i agree with i am still trying to make my characters more powerful, i am up to about 36hours of gameplay so far and i am constantly grinding to improve my stats.

but other than that i enjoy both games but after 20 hours you really have to love them if not then put the controller down and walk away slowly.

on another note, i recomend you start with FF7 or FF10 they are amazing and if your just getting into the genre these are a really good idea.

hope this helped.
