So I got "The Orange Box" on Steam one time maybe a year or so ago because it was on SUPER sale but the main reason I bought it was 1) For TF2 and 2) So I had a Source engine game to get mods for. After beating Deus Ex Human Revolution for a second time I find myself without a single player game to really play and I see that Half-Life 2 just sitting there in my list of Steam games...

Is it really good? Does it hold up as a great game still today 4 or so years after it's release? Also, about how long would it take me to complete (on average) all of the Half Life 2 content from The Orange Box. I say this because I will be starting a new job in about a week that will severely hamper the amount of time I have to play games and I'd like to determine if I can beat all of the HL2 stuff before I have to start...
I played it for the first time just recently as well, and I absolutely loved it. It's quite timeless, in my opinion, and Valve's direction and attention to detail are impeccable when it comes to making playable, entertaining, and well-balanced games. I think it's definitely worth your time.

But really, this isn't up to me is it? It's up to you. So come on, you've got the game, so play it already! You'll get a good idea for how the gameplay works within the first three to four hours.

Well I have just finished Half Life 1(I am literally about to start playing 2 this is a coincidence) and its 2 expansions for the first time and I will eventually download the community port of Decay as I have enjoyed them greatly. While you will not have the wow factor that the original people to play it had as a lot of the stuff has been done again even in Half life 1.

The games I have found have been a very solid enjoyable experience thus far but not the Jesus they are hyped up to be but you know I think everyone at this point knows not to believe the hype about anything. No matter the movie, game, book, tv show or whatever if you go in believing the hype you will not enjoy it.

So I say if you so choose to play it see what the game is like for yourself and ignore people saying it is shit, mediocre or good as this will pre colour your opinion of the game or expectations. Regardless, you can still see why the games can be considered timeless and are a quite different experience to today's FPS the first and its ilk in particular are more like the corridor shooters of yore like Quake. Well that's my opinion anyway.

Depends: do you like open, sandbox games, or on-the-rail, jump-through-the-hoops shooters? If you're in the mood for the latter, you could do a lot worse than Half Life 2
