Is Half-Life 3 really that anticipated?

I dont want it.

And anyone who does will probably be disappointed if they get it. Just like Duke Nukem forever....

I see a lot of people saying this is going to turn out like Duke Nukem Forever because the huge amount of hype and sky high expectations surrounding it will basically crush it. Mind if I quickly challenge that view?

Duke Nukem Forever's development was an utter nightmare, with way too many engine changes and way too much bad crap happening behind closed doors at 3D Realms. The end result was an objectively bad game and that's what sunk it, the hype and whatnot just blew it up into a huge disaster, I bet if you took away all those sky high expectations and made it release within two years it still would've been a disaster, just a much smaller one.

With Half Life on the other hand, by the sounds of it, they're just sitting on it. Valve sounds like a very chilled company to work at so from here on out its just assumption: The game is not stuck in some legal limbo or being mangled and thrown to other companies, its most probably just being worked on when they have a good idea going for it or left for when Source 2 gets established. Regardless, I believe the end result will either be a magnificent game that somehow lives up the hype or a game that fails to live up the hype, but at the very least ends up being very good, leaving most fans more than happy with it.

The point I'm trying to make is, sky high expectations, hype, anticipation and all that jazz isn't the only thing that destroyed Forever and while it certainly may pose a problem for Valve when Half Life 3 becomes a thing, its certainly not some inescapable doom that's going to destroy it and all of Valve when it gets released.

It's already been said a few times :)

DN:F was a bad game that was overhyped and took a long time to arrive.

I expect HL3 will be a good game just like all the rest of Valve's games - but was still overhyped and took a long time to arrive.

Mind you I would LOVE to see a new Half-Life that stirred at least half as much amazement as either of the first two did, I just think at this point it would probably get a rather cynical and particularly testy reception.
While I agree this will likely be the case amongst critics, if the game manages to be even half as "bar raising" as it's predecessors I feel that quite a lot of that cynicism will melt away.

This, of course, assumes it will be that revolutionary, evolutionary, or that high in quality. Something the minds at Valve are certainly capable of but aren't necessarily guaranteed to achieve.

Ah! I will be sure to read more thoroughly next time :p

Speaking of Half Life, what's the situation with Source 2 so far anyway? I feel the closer we get to that the bigger the chances are we'll start seeing some Half Life related news, hell it would be pretty cool if it's actually the first game to use that engine. Alas a man can dream.

Nothing concrete except that L4D3 is gonna be on it and it is actually in development...

Valve CAN count to 3 - confirmed.

I've played the first two, including mods, and have always thought the mods were more fun than trudging through a single-player FPS/puzzle game in really drab, depressing worlds. If there's anything I'd anticipate it would be a new generation of games built off HL3.

Never understood what the legions of die-hard fans see in the adventure series or even Gordon Freeman. It's one of those things that's pretty awesome for everything it is and did a lot for the game industry, but way overrated and ruined by hype.

I think that now its just a long running joke that people play into. It will probably do really well if its released but I don't think many people are actually waiting with baited breath.

I don't expect the next Half Life game (whether it's Episode 3 or Half Life 3) to ever be released. At this point it's obvious that Valve has put it on hold indefinitely.

If they do decide to actually make it, I'll be very excited, but I'm not holding my breath and waiting for any announcements.

Given how Half-Life 2 came out of nowhere and blew the entire industry and gamer community away after several years of mostly silence, I think Half-Life 3 is expected to be the same way.

Nobody's giddy with anticipation because we haven't heard anything about it yet, but you can bet your ass that when real news actually hits, it's going to get people in in flames.

It's been so long since anything happened with Half-Life that a lot of fans have stopped caring. Not to mention that when HL2 came out, the physics system and graphics in that game were completely revolutionary. Nothing had been done like it to that quality.

I don't think Valve can do that with the Half-Life games anymore short of becoming like Crysis when it came out (I.E. Very few computers, even high end ones, could run it on full settings, highest resolution, etc, without it stuttering like a nervous kid giving a speech). Not to mention that unlike Duke Nukem which was in development for a decade or nearly two, HL3 hasn't had anything about it ever mentioned. And at the recent leak (Well...nearly a year old) that suggested they were working on Left 4 Dead 3, I don't think they're going to be doing anything Half-Life for a while. I also don't understand as to why they'd be working on L4D3 instead of HL, but trying to find logic in the brain of Valve seems impossible, since they seem to do rather...dumb...things. "Yeah, Left 4 Dead was pretty good. Better make another one a year later. Portal did pretty well. Better make a second one which dragged like the ************ after a third of the way through the game. Team Fortress 2? No new maps, just hats. A few years later, we should add 'robots'. Maybe a new map or two. What's that? People are just clamoring for a new installation in our most popular franchise, which used to make us the most money? Nah...fuck that."
