I think over time the Halo series is really losing its appeal. I could name about 5 games right away with the same premise of an out-door shooter with a loosely relivant story: Haze, Far Cry, Crysis (basically every game made by Crytech), Lost Planet, and Just Cause 2

No, other games are being Halo clones, which make Halo look generic by comparison. Don't forget that it was Halo: Combat Evolved that revolutionized Fist Person Shooters forever.

...You have just passed judgement 101 congratulations.

Halo doesn't deserve the love or the hate the gaming community gives it or ben yahtzees average title. In my opinion the halo games are fun with a decent story and hilarious deaths. And a pretty epic feeling while you play. So I say its very good but not a 100% masterpiece.

You do realize Halo perfected the genre, right? Halo CE fixed the controls for console shooters, and Halo 2 perfected online play. Of course it seems generic.

And then there's that...

Just Cause 2, really? How is that anything like Halo?
OT: I liked the first Halo a lot but since then every game has just felt like the same game with updated graphics and a few minimal changes.

Yes, the moment that it stopped really changing. Sure, it revolutionized FPS's, but the franchise hasn't exactly been doing much to differentiate itself from it's own clones and has essentially become one of them.

No, Halo is not generic, nor is it average.

I've yet to see another "mediocre" Console FPS that offers the same level of awesome story telling and universe that Halo has.

Halo Killers ruined the genre for everyone.

I hate Halo... i believe, very firmly that they stole their ideas from the Tribes series... look it up. 'Tribes: Vengeance' is one of my all time favorite games.

I agree with this. The original Halo in particular is a shining example of how to do a console FPS correctly which still holds up remarkably well (ESPECIALLY the AI) today. The level design was flawed, but everything else was great. Halo 2 kept the level design flaws from Halo 1 while messing up the weapon balance beyond repair and adding enemies who were more irritating than interesting. I haven't really played any of the others and so I can't judge.

I ment that they all seem the same that its all out-door shooters, I know Just Cause 2 wasn't the easiest example to use nor was it the best example but its just an example.

This. Halo has always been generic. There's nothing really original about it.

Now I'll grant that it helped console shooters along with a (now dated) good control scheme, and it was the first console shooter to do online well. But aside from those two things, everything else about it was ripped from other games, and the setting itself was ripped from a book (not that I mind that part).

The one thing I will give Halo is its excellent music.

I find it to be about as generic as a space opera by George Lucas. But hey, it seems gaming works primarily on two key elements: generic setting and the gimmick.

Halo's always been the go-to game for having a good time. There's just so much crap to do that it's the only game that I've kept coming back to over the years. Plus Bungie being such an awesome developer to follow helps too.

... Using autoaim, limited inventory, and regenerating health to cover up the crippling limitations of thumbstick controls isn't a revolution. Its a dumbing down. A Devolution.

Halo started the trend of "accessibility" over all other concerns, a concept that is killing gaming one day at a time.
What game were you playing? Halo: CE didn't have autoaim (No idea where that came from...) and while it had regenerating shields (which fit), your health didn't regenerate, you still needed to find health kits.
As for the limited inventory, I would like to point out how damn difficult it is to switch between a dozen weapons while playing on the console. It may be easy on the PC, but it isn't on consoles.
And you seemed to forget the introduction of vehicles, a large mutliplayer mode that surpassed those before it, and its kick-ass single player mode with Co-op.

As for your Devolution comment, you do know that every shooter for the past... what, 8 years has followed that trend, with the exception of the Valve games, but then, they've always been ones for taking the path less traveled.

I can agree with that ;) Star Wars (the original) wasn't all that generic, though it was based on the old Hero's Journey template. But nothing like that had ever really been done before (the space opera thing, if you will). After that, you can argue they got generic. I don't think anyone would argue the prequels aren't generic.
