Is Halo generic .... no!

Are these threads getting old ... YES!

Halo created the foundation for a good FPS game. Pretty much every game since has been just like it just different graphics.
Ironic, you're part of the reason these treads exsist. You think Halo is still unique even thought its basically the same as every other shooter for the past 3-5 years
I just want to make sure you know how little sense this makes. A game that came out 8-9 years ago is generic because everything else copied it? Is Evil Dead generic now that every second horror is "teens in the woods get killed off"? Is Lord of the Rings generic now that it'a law that every Fantasy setting must have ancient Elves, miner Dwarves and a young upstart race called Humans who have destiny on thier side?
No, but if they released an Evil Dead movie like that now, it would be generic. An original beginning doesn't make the derivtive sequels orginal

The standard controls suck.
The only way to really play good is with Bumper Jumper. Check "Controls" next time your on Halo 3 or ODST. Very useful.

*cough* half life *cough*

i joke, i joke but halo wasn't really that good once M$ realised that they could bleed it dry if they had not made any sequels i would have been much happier
Fixed... Bungie sold the rights to Halo to Microsoft, so really its M$ thats bleeding it dry.

I think over time the Halo series is really losing its appeal. I could name about 5 games right away with the same premise of an out-door shooter with a loosely relivant story: Haze, Far Cry, Crysis (basically every game made by Crytech), Lost Planet, and Just Cause 2
How are games like Just Cause 2 (which is a third person sandbox btw) and Far Cry anywhere near related to a Sci-Fi alien infested FPS like Halo.

It's a bit like comparing Half-Life 2 with Borderlands.

Half-Life (1998) was one of the most revolutionary FPS games of all time and even now I can safely say that it was smarter, better designed, and had a better control scheme than Halo did. The story was new and exciting (more or less), the weapons were awesome to use, the enemies were ruthlessly intelligent (for the time) and the puzzles/level design were outstanding.

I give credit to Halo where it's due; it revolutionized the consoles FPS genre with an accessible control scheme and very competent gameplay. However, it was always generic to one degree or another. Even with Halo's multiplayer (which is excellent), Unreal Tournament, Counter-Strike, GoldenEye, Perfect Dark, etc had already laid that foundation.

All in all, Halo did fix many of the flaws in console FPS games of the time, but it didn't "set the bar" for FPS games in general. Matter of fact, the bar is consistently being set higher year after year, usually on PC (Half-Life 2, UT2004, Crysis, etc).

I'm coming into this thread late...
and my opinion is the same thing I've seen repeated over and over here...
that Halo made console shooters recognised. But compared to PC it was still mediocre.

Halo 1 and Halo 2 revolutionize FPS gaming. Halo 3 kinda just... rode their curtails.
What? What about Forge? In my opinion, the creation and inclusion of Forge I what made Halo 3 so great. You can make anything : a map to play some kind of mini game, and the ruleset as well.
Half-Life 1 has Worldcraft. And Half-Life 2 has Hammer.
And how many other games had world editors and SDK's that allowed for modifications before halo got round to it?
TONS.
Why do you think CSS is running strong still, and all because of Hammer and the ability to run custom mods inside the game.
And HL2 with all it's mods outside the game...
Forge was late. And extremely unoriginal.

I hate Halo... i believe, very firmly that they stole their ideas from the Tribes series... look it up. 'Tribes: Vengeance' is one of my all time favorite games.
A far future video-game, about milions of guys in flying powerarmor, formed up in serveral clans fighting each other over power and territory...
=
Is the same as humanity, finding and fighting an alien religious covenant, who have deemed humanity hericy because we contradicts their beliefs of the "Great Journey", mainly fighting each other in massive ship-battles and small ground-assaults, consisting of lightly trained marines, a few spec-ops and a very small handfull of super-soldiers...

Of yeah, and you occasional encounter the fungus-like all-consuming race, called "The Flood", who once before opon a time, before time, forced an ancient alien empire (who was really human) to build massive weapons of mass destruction to eradicate "The Flood" and everthing else in the galaxy. (Which ofc failed)

Have even played any of the above mentioned games?

Just Cause 2, really? How is that anything like Halo?
OT: I liked the first Halo a lot but since then every game has just felt like the same game with updated graphics and a few minimal changes.
I ment that they all seem the same that its all out-door shooters, I know Just Cause 2 wasn't the easiest example to use nor was it the best example but its just an example.
I don't really get what you mean by "outdoor-shooters", I'm sure most shooters are situated outside, or at least partly? Rather, I think Halo has more inside moments than most of the games you mentioned in your OP.

Personally I've never really thought Halo was original. It was fun, sure, but the story/setting/characters/weapons were all generic already.

Well, except for the Needler, that thing is awesome.

Is Halo generic? yes
Is Halo a bad game? not at all

As for Halo revolutionising the FPS genere? well to be honest I dont think it really did.. I think it just took the Quake, Unreal and Tribes formula and made it viable for playing on console, and it did really well in that aspect, add some great music, a so-so story and strong multiplayer and you have yourself a good game.

I dont really play Halo online anymore, but I still get my mates around and play splitscreen (they need to know where I am to be able to beat me haha) and we have a great time, I think most of the hate comes from people claiming it to be 'Gods gift to gamers' when its really nothing more than a solid and entertaining game.

Saying that Halo is a generic fps with the whole 2 weapon system hide to restore health ect is like saying lOTR is generic high fantasy technically your right but only because everyone copied them after they did it. Im not saying that halo was the first with the back story but allot of games copied Halo after they did it.

Remember being generic doesn't correlate to how good a game is Halo was successful for multiple reasons.

Halo combat evolved:

1.Launch title on the Xbox: this got it allot of exposure due to the high volume of advertising microsoft put into its new console and small pool of launch games made it stand out.

2.Innovative game play: It may seem bland by todays standards but things like only 2 weapons health recharging instead of ammo packs and big outdoor environments featuring vehicle sections were more fresh back then.

3.Good execution of classic FPS gameplay: Lets face it even though i listed some new stuff to catch the eye in point 2 the core fps game play of halo was the same as quake halflife or even doom however this old style game play was pulled of very well with good controls scripted events and weapons so that the core experience was so solid gamers could focus on the new stuff.

4. Old plot done well: Halo, Avatar, Oblivion and Balders gate what do they have in common? Old plots that we have herd before executed so well we don't care. A games plot doesnt have to be as complex as heavy rain to we liked even old plots done well with interesting characters will cause the same amount of enjoyment.

Halo 2:

Most consider this the weakest of the series it didnt really improve on the game play much just rehashed the old most generic of the series.

Halo 3:

Much like blizzard or valve halo 3 proved that if you spend enough time you can refine even simplistic game styles into golden gems because lets face it as much as people like coke with lime or bacon w/e there will always be a place in there hearts for regular coke. Yes halo 3 was generic but it was also very good because it had been made by people who had experience and had refined Halo which was a good game into halo 3 that was a great game.

Future halo games :

I havent played halo since halo 3 so i can only speculate looking at the reach beta footage that bungie are continuing to refine halo down to what people like best about it just like blizzard did to Diablo 2 and valve did to half life 2 good game squeals figure out what people liked about the game and base it round that while still mixing it up.

the first halo was good/great even and 2 was also fairly deecent the 3rd was also decent but pushing it alittle then they went on to milk it with crap halo wars a cheap nock off rts and dont get me started on that odst

gah here i am a normal trooper i have night vison about the same regen and amour as a sparten what was the point in making a sparten then the only thing he does better is umm umm nothing at all cept maybe live in space u can even rip turrets off like the master chief does

plus they bring in a brand new alien race that has never been seen or heard of before and they might be the key to winning bah just a cheap sad story to milk more money out of people some more if they keep it up they will be as bad as star wars

Nah, I believe Halo:CE was just a dumbed down and slowed down version of Quake 3, which really revolutionized all FPS...Halo was just the first mainstream game that everyone that didn't play games as much bought into.
which I found doubtful, though I can't say for sure because I haven't played it, and that wouldn't be fair.
In short, it was.
Here's just a few games that are base on or from Quake. [http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/63/Quake_-_family_tree.svg]

It was the father of all FPS. And just because Halo has achieved more popularity by Xbox Live stoners doesn't even make Halo come close to Quake.

(By the way, where it says Goldsrc and Source, that's all the Half Lifes, Counter Strikes, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2, Valve Games)
