.....................................................................
.......................................................

You can scarcely travel to a gaming site, forum or news spot without finding a legion of articles on the ever anticipated killzone sequel. The game has received quite a rave from the PS3 fan sites, and the hype has boiled over into all aspects of the gaming community. The amount of attraction this game has amounted seems to be getting borderline "Halo like", with fans climbing out of every crack and crevice with information pertaining to this game.

This is kind of an awkward situation for me because when I think of killzone I think of that mediocre shooter back on the PS2 that got its name as a "Halo Killer". So when I start reading an article on how great the game is going to be, I start wondering what I missed. How could a game that received such disappointing reviews, come back again as a flagship for Sony? I was utterly confused, because 98% of the time the sequel is always RELATIVELY worse than the original (with exceptions like COD4).

So now fully intrigued by this odd production choice, I decided to check out the footage for this new game (a thing I like to avoid unless necessary, for I feel it can ruin a game if done in excess). After shifting through some cinematic videos with no actual gameplay, I found a mother-load of live action footage of the first few levels. After viewing this I was absolutely blown out of the water by the visuals. Now that my appetite was wetted with this information I headed over to N4G.com (a gaming news site) to see if I could find any movies of the latest builds. While shifting through the pages of articles I found one article that was explaining how KZ2 was a ?Halo Killer?. For the sheer Irony in the title I Continued to read, and the very biased article tried to conjure up how Killzone was better than Halo in every way.

While I normally turn my head and laugh at these pointless arguments, to claim the same thing your predecessor tried years ago, and failed at, is something to be noticed. Satisfied that this was most likely the ranting of some blogger who wanted more traffic, I moved on. It wasn?t long before I bumped into another article with an uncanny likeness to the first. This trend of finding a video, then finding a few rants continued until I met one very prominent article. This one compared the two and left me thinking that killzone was a gift sent from God.

This was definitely the last straw; I was no longer interested in this game, but excited.
All this hype coupled with stellar graphics caught me in the crosshairs, and I started reading IGN articles, and watch GT movies like I was looking for duke nuk-em forever.
After a night of catching up on the Killzone 2 craze, and after briefly explaining to him how it was going to crush halo, resistance, and any other shooter under its mighty helgan boot, I decided to show a friend of mine the footage. I started off by showing a few of the best movies, and trailers, but I noticed something as I watched more and more of the gameplay videos, I was getting less and less impressed.

You see, the normal way I work is that the more of a game I see the more hyped I get. Right now Ive watched the ?Dawn of WAR? trailer about 7 or 8 times and I still can?t get enough. Unlike that, the more I watch killzone the more flaws I start to see.
With the sudden crash of reality, my perception and better judgment also return. Allowing me to analyze, the Perceived similarities and differences of the HALO and KILLZONE games
The game, while great looking, is grey. -It?s almost the polar opposite of the brightly colored bloom landscapes of halo.

The weapons are generic, and from what I?ve heard, the most exotic weapon is a sort of ?Tesla Gun?. An odd layout for a game going up against the exotic layout of Halo 3, but hay who am I to judge.

The games style looks nothing like halo. I see little or no jumping around, firing without aiming, or lack of cover. In fact The game flow Is based more around the well built cover mechanic then the Robo-cop style charging found in halo.

Character variations are much different. While one aspect of killzone was to have a large variation of troops, from what I see they are all fairly similar except for a few ?heavy? enemies, or drone-like opponents. This is a farcry from the many vastly different opponents in halo, with each having many different variations on them. So while Killzone opts for realism, it strays further away from Halo.

Story-wise they are incredibly different. One deals with odd looking aliens attacking earth with the intentions to destroy it, the other is sci-fi look at WW2 where the Germans are replaced with an outside invasion force, that can?t breath air.

The only real similarities (beside them both being FPS) is the main characters. Master chief and Sev are both rugged, tough, and unnaturally quite soldiers, who somehow have the ?Know how? to use anything that could be a weapon. They also have the same qualities as a roman god, in that they can?t seem to be killed with conventional means. The only difference here is that Master chief has a Badass suit of armor, while Sev just has?umm?.well I don?t think there?s a real explanation.

The odd thing that I have noticed is that while everyone has been labeling it as a Halo killer, I made a slightly more valid find.

See any similarities? I do. I propose that Killzone isn?t going to kill halo, but Call of Duty.

I still really like how Killzone is looking and I will probably buy it, and I can?t say anything definitive about it until I do. But If I were to wager my bets, I would say it isn?t even dealing with the same gameplay elements as halo, so I doubt there is really any franchise attacking going on.
This is just my 2 cents, so tell me what you think about the upcoming Killzone.

(this is my first large scale post, so any pointers would be much obliged)
Edit: Spelling mistake corrected

While Killzone 2 may be a successful game, but to say that its a "Halo Killer" is irrelevant because they're on DIFFERENT PLATFORMS!

I'm not falling for the Killzone hype twice. I'll stick with the other 100 generic FPSs I already own, thank you.

Also, nice article. Very interesting to read.

The first game was billed as a Halo Killer by the media, the designers didn't make a game that was supposed to mimic Halo, or claim to do it better. Granted any FPS made now will be compared to Halo and the phrase "Halo Killer" will invariably come up.

That said Killzone was one of my favorite FPS's. I can't wait for the second, whether it's amazing or terrible I'll enjoy it.

I don't think anything will kill the insane fanbase that the Halo games have. It seems everything new nowadays has to have some kind of cover mechanic because just holding the crouch button and popping out manually isn't enough.

Killzone 2 may be a good game, but perhaps I'm just too jaded to see it or Halo as anything aside from "yet another first person shooter."

Long story short, PS3 fans will pretend that it's awesome, and make fun of 360 owners for not having it, and 360 owners will do the vice versa for Halo.

Halo can't die to something like this, it's gotta be another interesting original sci-fi universe that's not insanely dark.

For PSP owners, you should definitely check out Killzone Liberation, the sequel/spin-off of Killzone 1. It's a pretty fun third-person shooter, although the boss fights and vehicles suck.

Killzone 2 is one of three reasons why I regret getting a 360. The other two are Kingdom Hearts 3 and God of War 3.

Although with the way Square has been going, a multiplatform KH3 isn't exactly impossible...

The half-life series is the actual best line of FPSs, this game looks generic and boring, like the halo sequels, the first halo was OK I guess.

By that logic Mario and Final Fantasy would already be dead with their huge pile of shitty/different spinoffs.

Killzone 2 isn't a Halo killer, Halo Wars is. Wait, let me explain.

Even if Ensemble manage to pull a miracle out of their collective arsehole and make a functional console RTS, the game is still going to be replacing the run and gun style of Halo that makes the bulk of its fans love it with a calm and methodical pace that requires actual thinking - be honest, how many of the fratboys will really stick around after that? With the name Halo stuck onto a game they really don't like, they drop the series. Thus, Halo is killed by Halo Wars.
I do Have quite the number of friends who would fall under the "FratBoy" demographic, and I can say with confidence that very few of them know about halo wars, let alone have much of an opinion. Id say that unless there's a massive ad campaign, or the game is somehow good, I doubt it will be bought by anyone but the hard-core.

Though my single vote actually goes toward it, rather then against it, because Im more excited about Halo wars then I was Halo 3. Simply because its something new.

But Im more excited about DOW2 then any of these, so maybe Im just a freak?

I've been reading all the articles I come across about KZ2 as well and have found you don't need a PS3 bias to like this game, apparently its simply good stuff. At least if you believe GR, EG, GS, 1up and Kikizo (who are saying the same thing). But I have an advantage over most people, there's simply no way I can get hyped over a shooter, they're nice distractions but that's all.

I really like the flame thrower though, the only one yet that actually streams forth liquid and ignites it, just like a real one. Gameplay wise I think my fave will remain the one from Return to Castle Wolfenstein though.

And I really like that they promised to include bots. That was a long time ago they announced that, I hope it makes the final cut.

KZ2's pace is apparently slow and methodical. Your movement speed is not very high at all and you're liable to get your head blown off in seconds if you show up in an enemy's sights. So I'm guessing its a slightly more adrenalin filled version of Rainbow Six Vegas as you don't die that quickly but still got to check every corner before leaping in.

I never understood the comparisons of Killzone 2 to Halo, it always struck me as a game closer to Call of Duty than Halo. For the record the dev team actually disabled cover in the multiplayer (Which I think is stupid.) the cover mechanic is only available in the single player.

No, you aren't. You're more excited for what appears to be a better game from a company that knows how to do RTS games well and, instead of milking a franchise that is built around FPS they are milking a franchise that is built around strategy. Yeah, Ensemble made some good RTS games (AoE3 was... really good) but not nearly on the same level that CoH and DoW1 were. Most Ensemble games lack depth, much like the Halo series.

Which could be why you aren't very excited for it.

It could also be that you're wise to the fact that if the game didn't have Halo in the name and went under a different name (like... I dunno Space Tactics) people would say things like "That looks like your average RTS alright" and pass it up with a 7 or so in score and it would just linger as one of 'those' games that never makes it big but a small number of fans find it AMAZING for some odd reason.

There's much to be said about brand loyalty. The fratboy demographic >will< buy Halo, Call of Duty, Killzone, and Resistance (nothing wrong with any of them, I like CoD and Resistance... just pointing out a demographic). Every time. Regardless. They will buy what is advertised on T.V. or is hanging on a wall at the local Gamestop they go to four times a year to buy that one game that was advertised the most and has the most man appeal.

Despite being manlier than anything anyone could ever dream up on a non-drug induced trip, I don't think DoW2 will appeal to fratboys, even those with computers able to play it. Even if it came out on the 360 I don't think it would sell to that demographic very well. Even if it was advertised well and had a big picture of an ork with rockets on his back shooting his guns at a guy with a chainsaw doing a front flip in the air on the box it wouldn't sell well because it's an RTS with depth.

Or I could be way off with all of this as well.
