Is inception over hyped?

I liked inception. I thought it had some great set pieces, amazing effects, good supporting characters etc. However I also felt that the central trio of DeCaprio, Page and Cotillard really failed to connect and so we lost the real emotional link in the movie. The script had several great moments but wasn't particularly memorable overall.

I left the cinema thinking it was an interesting if slightly smug take on the heist movie. But now it's 8th on imdb's top 250 film and all that aclaim. why?

Well it was really good, and I think that if you focus more on just the leading DeCaprio and ignore the other two, it looks so much better, cause that's how I saw it. Not a leading trio, but a lead.

But I totally see what you're saying. 8th all time? That's just a little bit ridiculous.

Because people liked it a lot. Many many people liked it a lot. Just because you thought it was sub-par doesn't mean that it actually is. Your opinion really means nothing in the grand scheme of things here. As does mine. It all comes down to the critics and reviewers of the movie.

If you want your opinion to matter, write a review for IMDB or Rottentomatos. Until then, you'll have to just settle with the rating things get, regardless of how you feel in opposition.

Nope. I loved it. I had an actual grin on my face when the van went over the side of the bridge, and they kept swapping back and forth between dream worlds.

And I watched The Prestige again the other week, and Memento for the first time the other day - Nolan's my favourite filmmaker right now. By a very long mile.

I watched The Prestige for the first time not long back, very good film. Loved it, not seen Memento though.

As for Inception, I really like that film, its pretty clever and tis a good story. Brilliant film as far as I'm concerned.

Take the Matrix, throw in a dash of dead wife angst ripped from solaris, sprinkle liberally with action, and bang, you have yourself a hit. It's not as clever as it thinks it is, but it's a lot better than some of the dross I've paid to see in my life.

It was good but not the "mind-blowing masterpiece" that some people say it is. An ambiguous ending is nothing new, movies have had them for a long time. The movie is not hard to understand... AT ALL.
In fact the only time in the movie that I was confused was at the beginning since my friends caused me to be late and I thought the movie had started a half hour ago. then I realized that's what they were aiming for. When I left the theater my friend said, that was awesome, Did you understand it? I wanted to smack him for not paying attention.

It's overhyped, but what isn't?

NOTHING lives up to the hype, be it a game, movie, book, or TV show.

That doesn't mean it's not good.

Also, 8th?! Shit.

I don't think it counts as "over-hyped" at this stage, that's more for things that haven't come out yet, not things that have been around for months and "everyone" has seen.

It is however, most definitely over-rated.

Oh God yes it was overhyped. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Inception, it was a movie that was smart for Hollywood, but that doesn't mean that it's smart.

Inception was, at best, a decent sci-fi-action-heist-film-thing, but it hit that perfect spot of being smart enough that people with brains could enjoy it, but not so smart that it was above the head of the average moviegoer. That doesn't make it good, it just gave it the right elements to be popular.

Hell yeah its overhyped. The only reason people didn't get it is because it had overlapping elements. Hollywood doesn't usually do that.

Excellent movie, but it wasn't particularly earth shaking. Yes, it had an interesting concept that was well executed. And I'd be lying if I said that I didn't enjoy it.
While it deserves to have good things said about it, it doesn't deserve all the accolades that it gets. Nor does it deserve the "It's popular, so obviously it sucks" crowd.

It is still my favorite film after going through my other favorite movies. So I might be kind of biased but whatever, I disagree.

This is one film that earns its praise.
