Is inception over hyped?

Yes, it's overhyped. It was a good movie, maybe close to great, but it was nothing spectacular.

Maybe it's just that good movies are more noticeable nowadays where we tend to get inundated with clones and cash-ins.

Maybe a little, but it's a great film.

Incidentally I had an Inception-style dream within a dream last night. That was odd.

it was a good movie and when compared to the unending stream of crap that is put out it makes Inception seem all the better. I thought it was a great movie, and it was, but all the over hyping isn't because of that, its because its being compared to the normal crap that is barely worth spending the time to watch.

Are these sorts of threads incredibly predictable?

Like, WHAT THE HELL IS 'OVER-HYPED'? It is like everything that is good is over-hyped. Well, whatever. The movie was win.

It was hard to watch with all these concepts concentrated and pured in non-stop. I thought it took itself way too seriously... ended up yawning a lot in the theatre. Good watch, but... man... did it absolutely need to be so serious about itself?

I enjoyed it. That being said, it didn't interest me afterwards enough to think about it, and I didn't think it was nearly as smart as it thought it was.

And the way dreams were handled in it felt unreal. I didn't feel a connection to it, it didn't make me go "Yeah, that's what our subconsious is like"

In contrast, in Neil Gaiman's Sandman there have been countless times where I've went "This is exactly what goes on in my dreams! How does he know?"

In Inception, it was more of another virtual reality more than a dream-world.

It was good, but definitely overhyped.

I think that's because people, especially younger audience have gotten used to crappy movies that don't want you to think. I keep hearing that Inception is a really smart movie because you have to think (I'd kinda disagree with that, but that's my opinion), so I guess most people don't watch enough movies that challenge you intellectually, so when they see something that is a bit different and makes an effort, they will call it a masterpiece.

Also, people keep telling me you really have to pay attention. Do they have issues with falling asleep in the middle of movies or something? It was cut and directed well enough that it never got confusing.

The whole movie is an extended metaphor for the experience of going to the movies. Cobb is like the director and Fischer is the audience. Based on their roles the other characters can be put in similar terms; Eames is the actor, Ariadne is the writer, etc. Cobb takes Fischer through a series of fabricated events without him knowing it; similar to how a director tries to maintain the audiences' suspension of disbelief. When Fischer wakes up he is changed even though what happened was not real. Ideally, the same should happen to the audience at the end of a movie.
That's an interesting point. I always saw the theme of how our mind works as the biggest theme in it, and as I never felt that was adressed well enough, it left me unsatisfied.

Even if it was, it deserved all the hype it got. It was absolutely excellent and one of the most impressive films I've seen in a while.

Definitely over hyped. I didn't even really find it hard to follow. All the talk of how it would blow my mind made me skeptical from the get go. It was a good movie, but it had the ego of charlie sheen and the same boner he has for himself to boot.

I think its extremely over-hyped...it was good and unique story but theres SOOOO much better, it was too complicated:- too many things to explain in the plot.

The whole thing was just plot...in the action scenes they crammed more plot in, you never really had a time to sit back and enjoy cos you had to keep listening to all the dialogue or u will miss it.

EDIT: Dont get me wrong though, it was definitely one of the best movies of last year but I am comparing it to Nolan's previous movies and Inception is not Nolan's best or one of his best 3.

I just watched Memento for the 1st time today and I liked it much better than Inception.

All of Nolan's movies are amazing. If theres one thing they are missing is 'warmth'...pretty much all his movies feel cold and use a colour palette that appeals to the cold and logical side of the brain...not the warm and joyful side. You can never sit back and absorb a Nolan movie with a smile on your face...you have to open your mind and let it in...if that makes any sense at all?

Interesting enough film but I've already been spoiled with 'Art of Dreaming' in Kult...

So much more versatile :p

Well it depends what you mean by "Overhyped" I know some people who adore the film, and others who aren't really bothered. It's advertised as an engaging and spectacular film, but that's an advertiser's job.

I really like the film, but don't think it's been greatly overhyped. It depends entirely on who you listen to.

Dicrappio is a really bad actor, he seems to only have 3 facial expressions.

Also I love how it was painted as some big confusing, labyrinthine plot when it was kinda simple.

It´s a good movie, but it´s a bit overhyped. Also:IMDB´s top 250 is not the most reliable source regarding film quality...
