There's lots of talk about Whether teleportation instantly is possible, is it?

I have noticed a weird trend here on the escapist, where people very often do two things when replying to a thread:

1) They read only the title of the thread, if expressed as a question
2) They do not read any other responses to the thread.

It is therefore my hypothesis that you can create a thread with a question-based name, and a main message that completely differs from it, and get a fair number of people to respond wrongly. It is especially effective if the first paragraph looks legit.

I wonder what a good way to Test this would be. Hmm.

Yes, what way to test it indeed. I do read everything though. Even if it has over 10 pages.

Yes, teleportation is technically possible, but we don't have the means yet.

I basically indirectly proved this with this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.244165-Metroid-represents-everything-wrong-about-our-treatment-of-the-enviornment] thread, in which a significant number of people did not read the entire main post and assumed it was serious as a result.

Yeah, people do it all the time teleporting from the thread title to their answer.

This happened yesterday: "Sex - Top or Bottom?"

It was about bunk beds and your gender.

Instant teleportation (the kind useful to humans - not quantum stuff) is impossible by the laws of physics as we understand them.

Since information cannot propagate faster than light, no communication or travel can be truly instant. And if you set that aside, it's still unfeasible to transport matter from one place to another (at human-useful distances) without destroying it. While you could simply transmit the information, and rebuild the subject at the other end, this raises more problems.

If you can transport people, do they count as the same person if they've been constructed anew? Then there's the issue of unauthorized copies...

Dude, we won't ever be able to teleport, it's impossible. No, I'm just kidding, I read the first post, I didn't read any of the rest of it, so I don't know how well the test is working.

Well if the title differs from thread content there will always be confusion, which do you then reply to?
You obviously made a double themed thread, so what do we now talk about?
And when the OP puts up a wall of text he can't realistically expect everyone to read his random ramblings, or the subsequent 10+ pages of reply's.

As for instant teleportation... hmm, maybe some highly convoluted abuse of quantum physics could do that but sofar we only understand very very little of that, or how it could be put to practical use.

It could be possible in the far future.

However you are basicly deconstructed sent over via a electric signal and being reconstructed elsewhere. So you basicly "die" every time you would use it.

Theoretically it may be possible. This would involve warping space-time either via hitherto-unknown means or possibly by wormholes, which may or may not adhere to the current theories and may or may not be possible to begin with.

Short answer, no, long answer, maybe.

Ha, nice idea. Don't worry, I read your 'Test'.
I'm still going to answer, at any rate.
No, instant teleportation isn't possible. It would require you to both destroy and create atoms, which is impossible.

I'm still going to answer your question, though, even though others have before (some erroneously, however). Because I like to feel smart. So, nyah!

No, instant teleportation isn't possible. Light speed, yes, but not instant.

Anyways, it's a side effect of how the forums are set up. A lot of people get to these threads from the main page, where it just shows the thread title.

If you want this to work around these parts you have to write a long OP. People actually read at least some of the OP and without a couple of paragraphs, not to say they read it all, or even absorb and process it fully before posting away, but they do at least read a large chunk of it.

So... do you want us to remark on instant teleportation? Or your hypothesis?

Your hypothesis has merit, as for the topic of this forum; I'm not sure... it hasn't been proved or disproved yet. They were talking about cloning one particle from another from a distance away and calling it transportation, but I dunno. Just because it wasn't accomplished doesn't mean it to be impossible, we may just lack the technology to do so.

*Teleports in*

This isn't the first time someone has made a subject like this, and you have made the same assumption that everyone in the Escapist is the same and that we all do this. We don't. It's just some people, and yes there was a POLL about it, so I'd say the case is basically closed.

On one hand, I want to give credit to the people who have answered the teleporting question, and assume they are joking. On the other hand though, they don't really show any signs that this is true...
If there's any doubt, read the capital letters in my first post. I thought it might be fun to discuss anyway, though...
