Is insulting fictional characters a thing now?

It's not just that Black WIdow is a fictional character. It's that it's a satirical response to fictional characters being rejected or passed over by another fictional character.

This is a lose-lose. The people announcing their outrage look petty, reactionary, and trivial, and are likely to receive diminishing returns when they want to address something of substance.

(And yes, I'm saying this isn't something of substance. Because it isn't.)

The people who are being criticized may be more careful next time, but they probably haven't "learned anything" aside from that- surprise- there are people ready to jump on anything they say, and the PR people become that much more likely not to allow anyone attached to a project to say anything on camera that doesn't come from a bullet-pointed script.

I wish those who choose to latch on to this kind of fluff would learn to pick their battles.

So I was browsing the interwebz today, and came across this story:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/people/2015/04/23/chris-evans-jeremy-renner-black-widow-slut-scarlett-johansson-avengers/26235729/

Here's one of the comments on it: "Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner should apologize for shaming Black Widow".

Ok, I get that people can complain that Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner were being juvenile (though I think it was abundantly clear they were kidding around), but "shaming Black Widow"? I mean, she's a fictional character, she isn't real, how can you shame someone who doesn't actually exist? Should I get in trouble for saying Harry Potter is a wimp? Or that Loki is an asshole?
This is the crazy world we live in today. You can slut shame a fictional character. Through an off color joke, by two actors on a press tour.

Here's the thing; I've seen more backlash against the backlash itself. At worst people decided that the joke was inappropriate and the two actors apologized. But then you have numerous other people saying that the actors shouldn't have apologized and the usual 'SJWs are ruining everything' comments that get tosses around when stuff like this happens.
