A lot of people rag on Deus Ex: Invisible War, but is it actually because it's a bad game, or because it's different from the first?

Invisible War has a severe case of Dragon Age 2. Not that that's a bad thing inherently. The critics mostly praised the game and it was the users who trashed it. Just like how most reviewers liked DA-II and most users bitched about it and gave it very low scores it didn't deserve.

To be fair Warren Spector said he did make a lot of (in hindsight) poor design choices with the game, many to do with limitations imposed on him by the hardware, or at least his knowledge of it, of the Xbox. It was one of the first true multiplatform developed games rather than one version being a port of the other and it does kind of show.

Still, in and of itself, it's a decent enough game. I had fun with it, which is all you can really ask from a game. Unfortunately it was crushed under the legacy of it's predecessor.

TL;DR - As a game, it's good enough. As a Deus Ex sequel, it sucked a fat one.

Bad? Not really. Mediocre, alright in some ways, disappointing in others. The main problem was that it was being billed as the sequel to Deus Ex, one of the most highly praised games to have been released in ages, and it failed to live up to that legacy in a spectacular manner.

Had the game not been Deus Ex and had no correlation with the original, sci-fi setting aside, probably would have been much better received.

Moral being don't set yourself up for direct comparisons if you're not ready for it!

And what the hell is this supposed to be?

Hello Guest. That is what you wanted to be called, right?

Invisible War is a decent game, much like everyone else pointed out. But again, much like everyone else already said, it is a bad Deus Ex sequel. I'm good at repeating other peoples opinion. Ho-Ho!

No. Really. It was fun, but I couldn't have cared any less for Alex over JC and missed the versatile gameplay (which I had expected to be there).

as i understand it, captcha comes from book scans at the library of congress. If the computer is unsure of what its looking at, it needs human training. Human responses from captcha feed into the computer learning programming, leading to improved reading of the books.

I loved Deus Ex 1 and Invisible War was like a slap in the face.

That said, as a game... I honestly don't remember. My experience was so clouded by anger that I can barely recall the game itself (I even considered buying it during a recent online sale because of this). The only thing I reeeeeally remember was getting about 7/8 of the way through, running out of ammo and not being able to beat the game. I played on the Xbox though, so maybe that part would have been different on PC.

In the end I decided not to spend 4 dollars to find out. I hope the next one doesn't suck (mostly because the same team is making Thief 4 and if DE3 sucks then, well, so will T4) but I'm not holding my breath, as the studio has not made any other games in its current incarnation.

Is it a bad game? No.
Is it a bad game compared to Deus Ex? Yes.

On it's own it's a mediocre game with an assortment of problems.
Compared to the original it's like being slapped in the face with a frozen trout.

Hurpa, I just finished Deus Ex (Again) Yesterday. You know that you actually find Alex Denton being created in Section 4?

Anyway, OT: as everyone said, no. It was actually way above average, and I enjoyed it a lot. But it was unlucky to come after Deus Ex, in which nothing could ever compete. I doubt Human Revolution will be anything near as good as the first, either...

Is it a bad game? No. It's actually pretty damn good.

Does it work as a sequel? Sure. It has significant differences from the first game, but it still feels like you're in the same world.

Probably not. I really dunno.

I had just finished the first one when I started the second though.

It's kind of like moving out of a mansion and into a falling apart shack. It still keeps rain off your head, but it's not nearly the same thing.

It's not bad. It's one of the better games out there. It's just not as good as the original.

It's one of the best games on Xbox--the console it makes the most sense on, given that so many design limitations were imposed because of it. Even today, Invisible War's gameplay is significantly more accomplished than, say, BioShock's.

Of course, it wasn't as good as Deus Ex. But if Warren Spector hasn't been able to follow up Deus Ex, he should take comfort: no one else has, either.

I'd say that describing Invisible War as mediocre on its own terms is patently ludicrous.

The story was pretty good, but the hit detection was horrid! I once shot a dude in the head 7 times and not one hit. I might not be the best source though, because that was the only Deus Ex I ever played

First Time i played the Demo and was severely disappointed because it did not feel like the First game.

Much later on i gave the actual game a chance and found the Level Design Odd, the RPG Elements much less enjoyable than the first game and the combat a bit stiff (EDIT: Wich it also was in Deus Ex 1, but that had more to compensate with).

Overall, Invisible War is not a bad game, but i certainly wouldn't call it good either. Slightly above mediocre. But even when not compared against Deus Ex 1, it doesn't suddenly become good. In my opinion, at least.

Okay, here's a list of Xbox games pulled from Wikipedia's list of 966 at random (the list is alphabetized):

Pilot Down: Behind Enemy Lines[EU]
Pinball Hall of Fame
Pirates of the Caribbean
Pirates: Legend of the Black Buccaneer
Pirates: The Legend of Black Kat
Pitfall: The Lost Expedition
Playboy: The Mansion
Plus Plum 2[JP]
PocketBike Racer
Pool Shark 2[EU]
Powerdrome
Predator: Concrete Jungle

. . .So, which 5-6 of these is Invisible War worse than? Is it Powerdrome? Playboy: The Mansion? Pinball Hall of Fame?

Jesus, Invisible War is a game by one of the greater developers ever that received largely positive reviews upon release. It had the misfortune of having to follow up the greatest frickin' video game ever made. It is not mediocre.

It was dreadful. It started off with great promise, but failed to create any sense of place, revealed that all initial decisions it forced the player to make were irrelevant, and had some horrible design choices like universal ammo, which meant that firing guns was never fun - because the ammo count was so low, you always had to use the smallest calibre gun, and misses had far-reaching consequences.

And that's without adding that it failed as a sequel to one of the greats.

It's actually a pretty good game. Compared to the original it has only two strengths over it.
The graphics, while nothing special in todays standard's were good, better than in Deus Ex 1. Also, the combat was more fun. That said, the game regressed in a lot of areas. Complexity was trimmed down all over the place. For example you'd only have ONE type of ammunition no matter for what weapon. The UI was also clearly created for console playing and that was really disappointing for PC gamers, especially all they got was a crappy port for PC, not leveraging a lot of the additional power a PC has over a console.

While not worthy of carrying Deus Ex in its title, it's a good game to spend some time with. I enjoyed it.
