Of course grains are bad for you! Almost all of them contain that dreaded substance: Dihydrogen monoxide! That stuff is seriously dangerous!

We'll she's entitled to her own opinions...but she's wrong. People who are based on a gluten-free diet do so because of a condition known as coeliac/celiac disease. It doesn't mean that it's bad for everyone! Grains are perfectly fine and wheat and barley were domesticated about 10,000 years ago. If it was bad, we would have known about it in that time.

And what could she possibly have against dairy products?
My mother is a registered dietitian. She went to Grad school for this stuff. She still regularly updates her information with meetings, conferences, lectures, etc.

She says the anti-grain, anti-dairy idea is ridiculous. We had a conversation on this last Thursday. I'm more inclined to listen to her.

The thing about using "Gluten-free" people as an example is that if they're going through all the effort to make sure their diet is gluten-free, chances are, they're going to be paying much more attention to their physical health than an average Joe.
Its like comparing apples to "What the Hell are you talking about?"

However, corn syrup is bad. And guess what? Its made through manufacturing and has only been available to the masses for decades, not millennia. And its introduction to the food industry directly correlates with the increase in obesity in America. If any foodstuffs should be persecuted, its this.
If she's preaching about the dangers of grains and dairy, but not corn syrup, she's obviously just jumped on some health fad bandwagon and hasn't done any research, or is only reading what the fad people tell her.
So..aren't we agreeing then? My only take is with those people who are ordered on a grain/gluten free diet. In their cases taking anything else can be..well, unpleasant due to the acute inflammation that can result in issues with nutrient absorption.

While it's not bad to eat dairy, I'd like to point out that it's not as necessary as many people believe, the majority of the world are lactose intolerant (so it should really be swapped to lactose retentive for those who drink milk). I'm "lactarded" according to my former housemates. I believe paradoxically osteoporosis numbers are lower in lactose intolerant groups than those who can drink milk products.

But the grains thing is silly. Though you should avoid white bread and heavily processed grains (like in a whole lot of breakfast cereals) because they're heavily linked to type 2 diabetes. Wholemeals are much healthier.

Grains themselves are far from bad. The only "bad" thing in grain is the shit that food companies insist on pumping into their products that cause all the health problems she's blaming on the grain.

And where are the cavemen these days?

Well... if we're talking Neanderthals, our ancestors killed the fuck out of them.

Then our ancestors went on to discover agriculture by domesicating the shit out of a bunch of plants and found that people who had sustainable sources of foodstuffs could maintain larger and/or healthier populations. This allowed them to kill the fuck out of anyone nearby who didn't have said resources, either by being in better physical condition and/or having a shitload more people on their side.

As people got better at agriculture food surpluses allowed people to start specialising in non-food gathering occupations, such as metalworking and soldiering - the implications for the killing the fuck out of people who looked at you funny are obvious.

The gluten comes mostly from the mass-production, I thought.
Oh well, whatever. No, it is not bad to eat grains. We've been doing it for millenia and, as it turns out, we have not all curled up and died from it yet.

Says the guy who is not supposed to have gluten or dairy (but does anyway).
No no. Gluten is merely a protein in the endosperm of grains. Not an additive. It gives dough the springyness. And grains are good for you, what with all the dietary fibre and b vitamins.
Ah, okay.
Wonder where I got that impression, then.

When it comes to the grain, I prefer to drink it.

'and that people who can only eat gluten free things are proof and that just because cavemen didn't have wheat and grains back then id further proof, so what do you think?'

I think the only sensible response to someone saying that is to laugh loudly in their face.

Yeah right... Grain bad for you... Without grain, there would be no pancakes, how can grain then possibly be bad?

In all seriousness though, she's a loony, grain is not bad for you.

Exactly. Which is why I'm out here in my cave on a laptop. The reception is crap, but everyone knows modern houses are bad for you, cavemen certainly didn't have those.

As for the laptop....yes they did have those. Made of stone.
