Is it fair for a DM to screw you over in a game if you're playing the character the way YOU want to?

DM is a real prick, unless you were going really overboard and ignored cues of annoyance.

I have to wonder if that's the case. It's possible that this came out of nowhere, and the DM is a dick. It's also quite possible the player was being really annoying.

A good GM should be flexible to play styles and what not, but I'm often wary of "was I wrong here?" stories, real or RPed, because they're often spun in such a way as to make sure the answer is yes.

In any case, I think I'm going to have to remember this one. You know, just in case.
